Are Indian Students Eligible for UNSW Scholarships? What the Official List Confirms

Yes, and one award is worth checking before any other.

The International Student Award gives 20% toward tuition fees for every year of your program. It sits outside PUCA1029 and is handled through your admission application. UNSW’s own India page states plainly that all Indian students are eligible for the International Student Award, and India appears by name on the official eligible-country list.

The route only Indian engineering students have

The UNSW Articulation Scholarships name four approved partner institutions. Three are Indian:

• Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE)
• Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology
• Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT)

If you completed an undergraduate articulation pathway qualification at one of these and are commencing a Bachelor of Engineering at UNSW, you qualify for Rs.3,36,600 (AUD 5,000) per year, paid as a stipend rather than a fee offset. A stipend reaches your bank account. A fee offset never does.

Counselor insight: The 500-word statement is the only part of the International Student Award you control. Everything else is citizenship and enrolment status. UNSW Scholarships Deadlines for Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3 in 2027

UNSW runs three intakes a year: Term 1 in February, Term 2 in late May, Term 3 in September. Each has its own scholarship round.

A note on the opening date: the official page’s sidebar shows 15 July 2026 while its body text and application terms state 6 July 2026. We use 6 July, and either way the round is open now.

The Term 2 and Term 3 rows come from the standing annual windows published in UNSW’s PUCA1029 FAQ document rather than from a 2027 advertisement, because UNSW’s scholarships FAQ page confirms the team is still finalising the 2027 application schedule. Treat them as a planning guide, not a confirmed date. For reference, the equivalent 2026 rounds closed on 26 February 2026 and 18 June 2026, so the Term 2 close lands in the last week of February rather than on a fixed day.

The condition that disqualifies most applicants: you must hold an offer of admission for Term 1 2027 by 30 October 2026, the same day the scholarship closes. A conditional offer is acceptable only if the outstanding conditions do not include Genuine Student (GS) requirements or English language requirements.

Counselor insight: The 30 October cutoff collides with the Indian campus placement season, and that timing costs students the round every year. A final-year BTech student sitting in placement interviews through October is not thinking about an Australian scholarship portal. Applicants with pending Year 12 results may still apply by the deadline, but offers are only made to recipients holding an unconditional letter, so a pending result is a real risk rather than a technicality.

How to Apply for UNSW Scholarships: Process and Documents

Four steps, in this order. Reversing steps one and two is why applications get rejected as ineligible.

1. Apply for admission to an eligible UNSW undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program. The online application fee is Rs.10,098 (AUD 150), per the UNSW fees page.
2. Upload your 500-word statement through the UNSW Applicant Portal for the International Student Award.
3. Register on the Scholarship Application Online portal and submit PUCA1029.
4. Submit before 30 October 2026. Late applications and late supporting documents are not accepted.

You are assessed on four criteria: academic merit, leadership shown at school, workplace or in the community, extracurricular activities, and your reasons for studying at UNSW. Every claim needs documentary evidence. UNSW states that unanswered questions and claims without supporting documentation will not be assessed at all.

On the English requirement, your test choice affects your timeline more than your score. Duolingo returns results in about 48 hours and UNSW accepts it, while IELTS booking and result cycles run longer. If you are choosing now, compare IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo on turnaround, not just price. If you have already committed to IELTS, check what your target band score needs to be for your program and work backwards from the October deadline. For PTE, the preparation route is the faster of the traditional tests.

Which UNSW Scholarships to Target Based on Your Situation

If you are a Class 12 CBSE student sitting boards in early 2027, your results arrive in May 2027, which is after the Term 1 2027 deadline has closed. Target Term 3 2027, commencing September. Apply for admission on predicted results, and if you are entering a Bachelor of Engineering, note that your 20% International Student Award needs no competitive round at all. If you are a final-year BTech student at VIT, Thapar or MAHE graduating in 2027, you are in the strongest position on this page. Confirm in your admission application that you completed an articulation pathway qualification, because the Articulation Scholarship at Rs.3,36,600 per year is assessed from that application, not from PUCA1029. Combine it with the 20% award. Missing the pathway declaration is the single error that costs students this money.

If you are a working professional with a 2023 or 2024 BTech targeting a Term 1 2027 MEng, you have roughly eleven weeks. Your admission offer must land by 30 October 2026, so apply for admission this month, not next. Your work experience letters are an asset in the leadership criterion that fresh graduates cannot match, so document promotions and team responsibility explicitly. If eleven weeks is not realistic, shift to Term 2 2027 rather than submitting a weak file.

Counselor insight: Students routinely skip the automatic bucket on the assumption that automatic means guaranteed. It does not. UNSW notes that Australia’s Global University Award has a limited number of places and that applying to study as early as possible helps. Automatic consideration is still a queue, and an application submitted in October competes against one submitted in July for the same finite pool.

What to Do If Your UNSW Scholarships Application Goes Wrong

Your offer letter arrives after 30 October 2026. You are ineligible for the Term 1 2027 round. Do not appeal it. Move your application to Term 2 2027 and keep the same documents.

Your offer is conditional on GS or English requirements. This disqualifies you even if you submitted PUCA1029 on time. Clear the English condition first, or enrol in the UNSW Institute of Languages package (UEEC), which is explicitly accepted provided you complete it before Term 1 2027 begins.

You submitted claims without evidence. Those sections were not assessed. There is no partial credit and no request for clarification.

You received nothing at all. The 20% International Student Award is not competitive for Indian citizens, so if you received no award, check that your 500-word statement actually uploaded to the Applicant Portal. This is the most frequent recoverable error.

How the 2028 Calendar Change Affects UNSW Scholarships Starting in 2027

If you commence in 2027 on a multi-year degree, your program will straddle two different academic calendars.

UNSW is replacing its 3+ trimester calendar with a flex-semester model, and the first flex-semester commences in January 2028. The new structure uses two 12-week semesters with optional summer and winter terms. UNSW states that degree structure and requirements stay the same, but the duration of your studies may vary depending on when you commence before 2028.

This matters for UNSW scholarships specifically because several awards are defined by term rather than by year.
