I grew up in a farm during my childhood so I would say I know a lot about crops. Not only I wanted to, I had an interest in agriculture but also wanted to pursue Bachelor of Agriculture Sciences after my pre-university college. So I think I have a fair share of knowledge about crops. The particular crop I'm very fond of is banana. It is a perennial crop. There are many advantages and disadvantages when you venture on growing banana. Firstly I would say as it is a perennial crop it takes one year to give the profits and secondly it requires large amount of labor and workers to work on it to care the plants throughout the year. On the contrary there are many advantages when it comes to growing banana as a crop. It is more stability in case of crops that are grown for a short duration like tomato or chili that we tried. We often had substantial loss because of rain or because of not getting a better rate for what we have grown but banana is always a secure crop where we definitely gonna get a profit but it takes a very long duration. We have around six acres of land where we try to grow various crops together because of the availability of nitrogen. Some plants give out nitrogen to the soil but banana consumes lot of nitrogen. So I would say mixed cropping is better for banana.

Follow up questions

What other crops did you grow on the farm?
We grew a variety of crops including tomatoes, chilies, and some legumes. Each crop has its own requirements and benefits. For instance, tomatoes and chilies are short-duration crops, but they are more susceptible to weather changes, which sometimes led to losses.

How do you manage the labor required for banana cultivation?
Managing labor for banana cultivation involves hiring seasonal workers during peak times, especially for planting and harvesting. We also train them on proper care techniques to ensure the plants are healthy and productive throughout the year.

What challenges do you face in banana farming?
One major challenge is pest management, as bananas can be affected by various pests and diseases. Additionally, the initial investment and long wait for returns can be daunting, but the stability it offers makes it worthwhile in the long run.

That's a great question. Especially in modern times, people don't usually ponder about the crops which they use. They just buy it from the supermarkets and make dishes out of it. So, I'll start with a top to bottom approach. That is culturally speaking, flat breads like roti and naan are of staple diet in India. I come from a western region called state from Gujarat. So, the crop which we use for making roti is of course wheat. The major thing about this is it contains a lot of protein. However, there is also one more crop that I usually have it on my dish. That is rice and sometimes millets which are more nutritious compared to wheat. That would be a disadvantage for that crop. Additionally, wheat is also not gluten free. It has to be processed in a manner so that it becomes gluten free.

Follow up questions

What are the health benefits of wheat compared to other crops?
Wheat is a good source of protein and provides essential nutrients. However, it is not gluten-free, which can be a concern for those with gluten intolerance. In contrast, millets and rice offer more nutritional benefits, including being gluten-free and having higher fiber content.

How do cultural practices influence crop selection in your region?
In Gujarat, cultural practices heavily influence crop selection. Wheat is favored for making traditional flatbreads like roti and naan, which are integral to daily meals. Additionally, rice and millets are also used, reflecting the diverse culinary traditions and nutritional preferences of the region.

What challenges do farmers face when growing wheat?
Farmers face several challenges when growing wheat, including climate change, pests, and diseases. Additionally, the need for proper irrigation and soil management is crucial to ensure a good yield. Economic factors, such as market prices and demand, also play a significant role in their farming decisions.

Follow up questions

What are some other health benefits of ragi?
Ragi is rich in dietary fiber, which aids digestion and helps in weight management. It also contains antioxidants that can help fight free radicals in the body. Additionally, ragi is gluten-free, making it a great option for those with gluten intolerance.

How does the cultivation of ragi differ from other crops?
Ragi requires specific climatic conditions, thriving in dry regions with well-drained soil. Unlike rice, which needs more water, ragi is more drought-resistant. Its cultivation involves less water and can be grown in less fertile soil, making it a sustainable choice for farmers.

Can you share a memorable experience related to harvesting ragi?
One of my fondest memories is when my family had a particularly good yield. We celebrated with a traditional puja, expressing gratitude for the harvest. The joy of working alongside my grandparents and the sense of community during the harvest season made it a truly unforgettable experience.

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

So I am familiar with plenty of crops like jowar, bajra and mustard seeds, etc. I used to visit my maternal grandparents every year during the summer vacation. So that's why I came to know about the farming more as my grandfather is a farmer and he is into agriculture. He often grows the crop of jowar. It is a really common crop to be grown in my village. So I've seen how it is sowed and how the process continues to grow this crop. It was quite fascinating to see at the first time. Jowar is the crop which is often used in Maharashtrian families for daily purposes, daily food. Personally, I am not that fond of this crop as I am a rice person, but if it is made with the stuffed vegetables and in the form of parathas, I prefer having it. This crop has a lot of carbs that can keep you full throughout the day and provide you the necessary energy to sustain throughout.

The crop that I am familiar with is known as black chickpeas. They are nothing but chickpeas but are smaller and black in color. I got to know about them is because my family owns a lot of farmland in my village and they grow it in the winter season and harvest it in the start of the summer. It starts out as a small green plant and grows up to be big or half of a human size plant. While it is green, the chickpeas are green in color and soft in texture as well. My mother likes to make vegetables out of the smaller plants or the leaves itself. While it grows up and becomes a bigger plant having green chickpeas, my mom loves to cook that as well. She cooks it with potatoes and we eat it with roti. The reason why I like this crop is because I love the vegetable that is made with the green chickpeas but the reason why I abhor it is I get to eat it too frequently because it is grown in our fields only. The reason why it is really important for my country to grow black chickpeas is it helps in our country's economy by exporting it in other countries and also by providing it as an option for food for other populations as well.

Sudan is one of the few countries that are famous for the production of large quantities of this crop and it is one of the cornerstones of Sudanese imports. What I like in sesame is that, as I have mentioned earlier, that it is of different uses. So it is basically used more in India rather than any other country. So this is the one crop that I am very familiar with. It is because since my childhood I have been seeing over this crop being added to many dishes that were prepared at my home. Initially I was, in my childhood, initially I never liked its taste and its fragrance so I avoided eating it. But then when I grew up, in my teenage, I started being very fond with it. I loved its color, the way it grew. So I started to know more about it and gradually I found how to cultivate it, how to harvest it, in what kind of climatic condition can it grow better and all of that. And lastly I got fond of it and oftenly I am now harvesting these crops. I have a mini garden where most of the places cover with species of coriander. There are multiple species of coriander like there can be huge leaves, small leaves, change in the color and etc. etc. So I am really fond of this crop. I have now prepared a way of using it differently. I have learnt how to make chutney with the coriander using lemon and other masalas and spices that Indian household use.
