A place I recently visited was the Taj Mahal which is one of the seven wonders of the world. I visited this place two months ago that is in November and I was fairly excited for this and I visited Taj Mahal. From the front, the place was extremely clean, extremely beautiful but when I took a round about in the surrounding area, the back side of Taj Mahal, there was, it was like a huge dumping ground, there was a huge amount of garbage collected which was decomposing over there and nobody kept it clean. It was extremely untidy and I felt like the front and the back had such a vast difference and it was extremely untidy which made me feel very bad about the whole place and I felt like it was very unbelievable for me because one of the seven wonders of the world, you would expect something different and the reality that I saw was, there was a huge contrast which I couldn't let go from my mind.

Follow up questions

What do you think causes places like the Taj Mahal to be unclean?
I believe that a lack of proper maintenance and management can lead to such situations. Sometimes, the influx of tourists can overwhelm the local authorities, and if there are not enough resources allocated for cleaning and upkeep, it results in places becoming dirty.

How can tourists contribute to keeping places clean?
Tourists can play a significant role by being responsible and not littering. They should also follow the rules and regulations set by the authorities. Additionally, spreading awareness about the importance of cleanliness can encourage others to take care of these beautiful places.

What impact does littering have on historical sites?
Littering can damage the aesthetic and cultural value of historical sites. It can also lead to environmental issues, affecting local wildlife and ecosystems. Moreover, it can deter future visitors, impacting tourism and the economy of the area.

Imagine walking into a once vibrant park now neglected and overrun with filth. The grass, which used to be lush and green, is patchy and brown, with litter scattered across the ground, plastic bottles, food wrappers, and cigarette butts strewn everywhere. The benches, once a place to relax and enjoy nature, are now covered in dirt, graffiti, and stains, with some even broken or missing slats. A fall odor hangs in the air, emanating from a nearby trash can that has long since overflowed, its contents spilling into the ground, attracting flies and pests. The pathways are cracked and uneven, covered in a mix of mud and trash, making it difficult to walk without stepping on something unpleasant. In the distance, a small pond that once sparkled in the sunlight is now stagnant, with algae covered on the water surface and plastic bags tangled in the reeds. The sounds of nature are muffled, replaced by the occasional sound of debris being blown by the wind or the rustling of litter. The lack of upkeep in this space is not just physical, there is a sense of neglect in the air, a feeling that no one cares enough to preserve the park's beauty. It is a place that once brought people together, but now it feels abandoned, like a forgotten corner of the community. This environment not only reflects a disregard for cleanliness, but also for the collective responsibility we all share in maintaining the spaces we live in.

Follow up questions

What do you think causes places like this to become neglected?
I believe a lack of community involvement and insufficient funding for maintenance are major factors. When people stop caring or when local governments don't prioritize upkeep, these spaces quickly deteriorate. It reflects a broader societal issue regarding environmental responsibility.

How can communities work together to improve neglected areas?
Communities can organize clean-up events, create awareness campaigns, and involve local schools in environmental education. Engaging residents in the upkeep fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, encouraging them to take pride in their surroundings and work together for improvement.

What impact does a dirty environment have on people's well-being?
A dirty environment can lead to negative mental health effects, such as stress and anxiety. It can also discourage outdoor activities, reducing social interactions and community bonding. Clean spaces promote well-being, while neglected areas can create feelings of abandonment and neglect.

When you press the second button, a little part of it would slide out. Basically it was just a little electronical and a fun thing to have and I owned it when I was in 6th. One day after break, I was standing and talking there with one of my friends and another friend of mine was running through the hallway and accidentally she pushed my shoulder and my pencil box hit the ground and it broke into multiple pieces to the point that it was not functional anymore.

Answer

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

Well, I would like to mention about one of my trips to Mangalore. I visited Mangalore when I was in my 12th standard. To be honest, we had planned to visit Kerala but then things went out of hand and we ended up staying back in Karnataka only. That's when I visited a beach there. Basically, I am a beach person. So, I visited Panambur beach and for God's sake, I regret my visit. It was the worst experience ever. To be honest, that is not a beach at all. The beach was fully surrounded with all garbage, plastic bags. It was literally like a garbage place visit instead of a beach visit. You wouldn't get that peace of mind if you visit that beach. I really felt very very disappointed. I visited there with my family. So, I was expecting to go have a nice beach view, experience the waves tapping my feet, take a boating if possible but then, no. It really didn't happen. To be honest, we were hardly there only for 10 minutes because beach was so beautiful as I mentioned with that garbage all around. We ended up returning from the beach within 10 minutes. I would really not recommend anybody to go visit that beach because it is not a place to be visited. Literally, I didn't feel like I was there in a picnic spot. I really felt like I just visited one of the roads next to my house and wow, it's a picnic spot.

Follow up questions

What do you think causes places like this beach to become so dirty?
I believe a lack of proper waste management and public awareness contributes significantly. Many people do not dispose of their trash properly, and there may not be enough bins or cleaning efforts from local authorities.

How can local authorities improve cleanliness in tourist areas?
Local authorities can implement stricter regulations on littering, increase the number of waste bins, and organize regular clean-up drives. They can also raise awareness through campaigns about the importance of keeping public spaces clean.

Have you seen any successful examples of clean beaches or parks?
Yes, I have visited beaches in Goa and some parts of Kerala that were well-maintained. They had clear signage about littering, regular cleaning schedules, and community involvement, which made a significant difference in their cleanliness.

Follow up questions

What do you think causes the lack of cleanliness in cities like Mumbai?

How does living in a clean environment affect people's health?
Living in a clean environment is crucial for good health. It reduces the risk of diseases, promotes mental well-being, and encourages outdoor activities. A clean space can also enhance productivity and overall quality of life, making it essential for communities to prioritize cleanliness.

What measures can be taken to improve cleanliness in urban areas?
To improve cleanliness, cities can implement better waste management systems, increase public awareness campaigns about littering, and encourage community involvement in clean-up drives. Additionally, local governments can enforce stricter regulations on waste disposal and invest in more public sanitation facilities.

Cue 1:Which place was it?

  • Begin by naming the place clearly, providing some context about its significance.
  • Mention any specific features or characteristics that made it memorable.

Example

The place I want to talk about is a public park in my neighborhood called Green Meadows. It's usually a lovely spot for families and children, but on my last visit, it was quite neglected.

  • Specify the time of your visit and any relevant events that might have contributed to the untidiness.
  • Describe the extent of the mess, including specific examples of litter or disarray.

Example

I visited Green Meadows last Saturday afternoon, and to my dismay, it was littered with plastic bottles, food wrappers, and even some broken furniture. The grass was overgrown, and the benches were covered in dirt, making it look very uninviting.

Cue 3:How did you feel about it?

  • Share your emotional response to the state of the place, reflecting on any disappointment or frustration.

Also the airport holds a lot of heritage because it was one of the first or second place started airport in India where the Britishers started ruling and also the airport was built to enhance the travel between the foreigners and for the domestic people. And seeing the international airport being unclean has disheartened me a lot because moreover there was no proper trash system. My friend Adarsh, when I visited him last week, his room was too clumsy and it seems like there was a dustbin got converted to a room or a room got converted to a dustbin. So yeah, so that's the thing. The thing mainly over here is he is very lethargic and in addition to that he tries to procrastinate the things, he tries to delay the things which leads to an overpiling of the work and once the things get overpiled, he is not cleaning it. So the point here is he is not clean and he don't keep his surroundings clean which is leading to all the untidiness and the diseases which are happening to him. So I have to visit him multiple times and check on him like what and all is happening, he is having severe fever, cough and cold due to the untidiness of the home that he is living in. So it's one's duty to keep the things clean, crisp and precise so that they have a cleaner house, they have an organized one. So if anyone comes, it is very welcoming and they don't have to feel like shy or they don't have to feel low that the house in which they are living is untidy. Moreover to all this, it's personal choices but I prefer having a cleaner room which gives me an authenticity that okay, I have something which is proper set whenever I will go to my home, I have my bed properly made so that I can sleep, I don't have to do any other chores so that it leads to a better creativity and you have a strategic planning of what other works you have to do. So yeah, when I got selected as a school counsellor, I was, I was assigned a room, I was assigned my cabin, my own cabin, and for initial, you know, like two weeks, I was assigned it, but it wasn't, it was very untidy, it was, it was disorganised in a sort of way that I could not work in it, I could not perform any kind of counselling sessions in that room because of its disorganising situation. So yeah, to describe that place, I would say that it will, it included every sort of furniture, the unused, the broken, and every sort of furniture in it, and all the trash, all the trash that could be, you know, like inserted or you say, could be stored in that place. So yeah, I found it very unpleasant.

I was not able to even comfortably sit at my berth because there were a myriad of smell and just the feeling of being grossed out was a lot. I usually have had this experience previously with Indian railways and the AC compartments are relatively cleaner but I do not understand why a place could be so filthy. It made me feel really uncomfortable and really started questioning the people there. I know not my place to judge but even so this train had a rather long route. It started I think two days back and I entered into the train while it was about to reach its destination so it can understand a certain amount of litter around. It can understand that but the state of the train bogie was extremely horrible.

The one place I have seen unhygienic was Malia Miana in Gujarat. I was working there in 2020. I would not say that the village becomes unhygienic because of the hygienic practices of the people there. I would rather say it's because of the systematic issues where there is no sewage, there is no toilet, there is no facilities and there is not even water connection properly. There is no facility for collecting garbage, there is no connectivity, transportation connectivity. So it becomes impossible for the people to keep the village clean. The village sewage is often clogged, the wastes are being dumped, there is no mechanism to address the waste problem there. The people's health get affected a lot and there is unfortunately there is no hospital facilities, well-maintained hospital facilities I would say. The people face nutritional issues, the people face health, physical and mental health issues, but the authorities remain silent despite of having requests from community collectives and civil organization. The authorities remain silent and they do not respond to the request and they do not act on this request. There is a lot of politics behind it.
