Nowadays the problem of littering is everywhere and today I would like to talk about a time when I saw a lot of garbage in my city. Last week I was travelling to another city and on the way I saw a big junkyard of garbage and upon seeing that garbage waste I felt very sorrowful for my city and for the management because it is the responsibility of management to look after the waste to properly dispose it and another problem would be the persons. People often do littering and they don't care about the streets, they just saw an empty space and throw the garbages out and when I saw that waste I called the authorities to properly dispose this garbage junkyard because it is not best for the city because a lot of tourists go on this route and they may see this huge junkyard and they might have different impression of our city.

It's been a year ago, me and my friends planned to enjoy the environment and a peaceful place. So we just selected a destination to Kodaikanal and we just travelled by car itself. We reached there and we just picked up some specific sports to enjoy the Kodaikanal. It was a cool climate which is more preferable for everyone that can enjoy the nature. Suddenly we reached to a spot called Kuwarni which is a famous place in Kodaikanal itself. It's a hilltop place and there is no permission to go inside because it's restricted from the forest department. I saw that most of the people are just not aware of what they are restricted and just got into inside. While I was observing too close, I saw that so many waste has been thrown through the area after their use. Even discharged from a small plastic to a big plastic waste itself. I just reported to the forest office about this and I feel hectic environment in that side because I don't think this is a good way to treat the environment.

Follow up questions

What do you think causes people to litter in natural areas?
I believe a lack of awareness and education about environmental issues leads people to litter. Many individuals may not understand the impact of their actions on nature and wildlife. Additionally, some might feel that their single act of littering won't make a difference, which contributes to the problem.

How can communities encourage people to reduce plastic waste?
Communities can organize clean-up drives, educational workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic waste. Providing more recycling bins and promoting alternatives to plastic, like reusable bags, can also help change people's habits and attitudes towards waste.

What role do you think government regulations play in managing waste?
Government regulations are crucial in managing waste effectively. They can enforce laws that limit plastic production and promote recycling initiatives. By implementing stricter penalties for littering and providing incentives for sustainable practices, governments can significantly reduce plastic waste in natural areas.

Yes, indeed I went for a summer vacation last time and on a beach in Goa and we were just passing by the beach and I saw a heap of plastic over there. There were bottles, there were wrappers of chocolates, chips and also there were vendors selling the things in plastic plates and I was very tensed about that so I was with my mother and we walked around throughout the day on the beach telling the people about the consequences of this plastic if it was thrown in the water which is usually done and how it was harmful to the marine animals. So after two days of hard work we went around the beach, we circulated circulars and all just to make the people realize that how the things could become worse if the marine animals ate the plastic or consume the plastic and how it can affect our earth. So finally after two days of hard work we got five people who were ready to help us with the help of government and we brought cranes and other things which could help to remove the plastic and seeing us many other people joined us and they also realized that yes it was harmful for the marine animals and we took out that plastic waste and we threw it in the lorry and then it went.

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

Very very often in the summer at the beach you can see a lot of plastic bottles spread on the sand. It is worse during the high season in Cyprus as there are a lot of tourists visiting the island. Therefore the beach is always very very busy. The last time I saw a very big mess in the beach especially with rubbish and plastic bottles around was after a very big festival that took place in my hometown. In the morning when we went for a swim we saw that the place was covered of plastic. It really made me feel disgusted. It also made me feel very very sad. Furthermore it was really uncomfortable to even walk or even sit anywhere around the beach. A couple of years back, I went to Rishikesh, which is a city in Uttarakhand, for a trip with my family. And I was completely mesmerized to see the serene view of mountains along with Ganga Valley. I was lost in the beauty of the city Rishikesh. We were walking on the Goa beach and then we decided to go at the backside of the hill. But unfortunately, I was immensely shocked to witness such a dirty environment over there. There was a huge hill of garbage lying and it was stinking so badly. Moreover, it was having a lot of plastic waste in it, which was being burnt by people. That was not only harming the environment, but also I was having pernicious repercussions on humans as well as animals. I was unable to stand there because of the air pollution it was leading to. Then we decided to move from there and go back to the hotel. But I was not able to overcome the fact that such a tourist attraction like Rishikesh was not clean enough to keep with clean environment and it was harming the health of tourists as well as the ecological life there. So my father decided to complain about it to an IAS officer residing nearby. And since my father has a lot of contacts and moreover, he is a very environmental friendly person, so we decided to visit the nearest IAS officer and we complained regarding this issue and he promised us to take a step immediately as soon as possible to remove the garbage from behind the hill so that the visitors of the city do not have to face such consequences of harming their health.

A couple of years ago, me with my family visited Ganapati Puri temple, where we visited a temple and took darshan of Lord Ganesha. After taking blessings from Lord Ganesha, we gathered on the beach to have some fun. So when we reached on the beach, we saw there were too much plastic on the beach. Even under few centimeters of the sand, there was a plastic. So me and my family along with the people around us decided to clean the beach so that the beach will look good and even if another tourist will come here or visit here, then they will see the beauty of the temple and the beauty of beach. So when we started to clean the beach, there were a lot of local people who helped us. They gave us a broom and they gave us a bag to collect all the garbage or plastic. When we started to clean the beach, many people joined us in our work and we took before and after pictures of that beach. So after cleaning the beach, we saw a huge difference in aspect of cleanliness around the temple and it was a good decision by our family and the people who helped us in this work. I recall visiting a beach recently and it was disheartening to see the amount of plastic waste scattered along the shoreline. There were plastic bottles, straws, bags and other disposable items littered everywhere, which seemed to have been discarded carelessly by beach goers. The sight was not only unpleasant but also disturbing, given the impact of plastic waste on marine life. It was clear that many people had not taken the time to properly dispose of their trash and the ocean currents had washed it up onto the shore. The experience left a lasting impression on me, highlighting the need for greater awareness and action to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable practices.

    Band 6-7

I would like to share a personal experience regarding the waste, plastic waste. This was during my industrial college visit when we were taken to a small town near outskirts of Maharashtra. There I witnessed a lot of plastic waste on roads, in the water and factories disposing the same plastic liquid waste into the waters. As much as I wanted to help the entire village, all I could do was to pick up the plastic waste from the main road and to collect it towards the side of the road. I also encouraged my friends to help me out in the same process. After three hours of hard work, we successfully managed to clean one whole street of plastic waste as well as the other types of waste. As collecting this, I had numerous thoughts in my head that how does the panchayat system function or why is there not an aid to the waste management in the villages. This also makes me concerned about the health and the issues of the public living in the nearby areas. Disposing more and more plastic in the environment would cause significant damage to the environment as plastic is not disposable in nature, it would cause soil erosion as well as it might if mixed in water in liquid state, it might cause water degradation having an alarming effect to the marine ecosystem. However, I would like to urge every single person to collect as much as waste possible in their nearby areas and together we would have a strong impact on the waste management.

    Band 6-7

As we see that majority of the pollution is caused by plastic waste and as we know that plastic doesn't get dissolved in soil easily. So in India the main problem of pollution is due to the plastic waste because citizens are not given proper knowledge to how to manage the plastic waste and how to dispose it. So during my recent education trip, we got a chance to visit Kolkata to see their heritage. But as we entered Kolkata, the first impression of the city was it was a city of junkyard. Wherever we have gone, we just only see plastic waste fallen on the streets. There was no proper management throughout the city and the civic sense in people was not there. They were just throwing the plastic waste on the street due to which the cows and the animals were eating it. And as all over, the impression of the city was not good because as we all know that Kolkata is known for the heritage sites and clean roads, but it was totally opposite. We feel very disturbed to see that people were eating chips and wafer and they were just throwing it on the road. Although there was garbage dustbin nearby, but as they were not given proper knowledge that how you have to dispose these things, they were just throwing it. I think that government which is handling all the waste in Kolkata must see this and use fine like things so that people get a proper sense that whether they have to fine or they have to use their civic sense to clean their city.
