NTNU Trondheim Fees for 2027-28: Tuition by Category in INR

NTNU Trondheim fees for the 2027-28 intake are not published yet, so this guide converts NTNU’s official 2026/27 rates into INR and uses them as the planning blueprint.

2027-28 note: As of 30 September 2026, NTNU’s tuition page lists only 2026/27 prices. NTNU adjusts them every year in line with inflation, and Norway’s fee law changed on 1 August 2026. Treat every figure below as a baseline, and expect your admission letter to state the fee that applies to you.

NTNU tuition fees are charged per 60 ECTS credits, which is one academic year, and the price category depends on the program you join. Students with citizenship outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland pay them, and that includes every Indian citizen, so NTNU fees for Indian students follow the same categories.

CategoryFields coveredPer year (INR)Per year (NOK)Two years (INR)
Category 1Humanities, social sciences, economy, business and managementRs.17.74 lakhNOK 176,300Rs.35.49 lakh
Category 2Natural sciences, technology, sports and health sciences, social sciences, educational sciences, performing arts, media studiesRs.20.69 lakhNOK 205,600Rs.41.38 lakh

Source: NTNU, Tuition fees, price categories for 2026/27 per 60 ECTS. INR at Rs.10.06 per NOK. Two-year figures are one year multiplied by two and exclude the yearly inflation adjustment.

Five NTNU master's programs in English carry separate, lower prices, so check your program before budgeting from the category table:

ProgramPer year (INR)Per year (NOK)
Childhood StudiesRs.2.66 lakhNOK 26,445
Global Relations and Sustainable DevelopmentRs.2.66 lakhNOK 26,445
International Business and MarketingRs.6.21 lakhNOK 61,705

Fine ArtRs.3.10 lakhNOK 30,840
Source: NTNU, Tuition fees, separate program prices for 2026/27 per 60 ECTS. INR at Rs.10.06 per NOK.

Counselor insight: The price category follows the program, not your bachelor's subject. A BTech graduate who moves into a business master's pays the business rate, so compare the fee line of every program on your shortlist before you rank them.

Our guide to MS in Norway for international students lists the wider set of options.

Why NTNU Trondheim Fees Are Not Zero for Indian Students in 2027-28

The short answer for โ€œis NTNU free for international students?" is no for non-EU/EEA degree students. Norway ended free tuition for them from autumn 2023, and NTNU still charges them. Exemptions cover students admitted before 2023, exchange students from partner universities, Erasmus Mundus and Nordic Five Tech students, and PhD candidates.

Parliament removed the cost-covering fee rule on 1 August 2026, which lets each university set lower prices (NordiskPost). The University of Stavanger, for example, set Rs.6.04 lakh (NOK 60,000) a year for humanities, social sciences, and economics (University of Stavanger, University World News).

NTNU has not announced a cut. Its pro-rector said in October 2025 that NTNU would obey the existing rules while the law was pending, and Norwegian institutions usually announce fee levels around November. The University of Oslo already lists rates for 2027/28, so a 2027-28 NTNU price may appear near the time your application window opens.

Counselor insight: Do not hold back a 1 December application to wait for a fee announcement. The tuition invoice arrives only after you accept an offer, and the admission letter states your fee, so you decide with the final number in hand.

Living Costs on Top of NTNU Trondheim Fees in 2027-28

The cost of studying at NTNU includes rent, food, and transport, and the NTNU Trondheim cost of living figures below come from NTNU's own list. To study in Trondheim, plan on these 2026/27 numbers.

ExpensePer month (INR)Per month (NOK)
Housing: single room, shared bath and kitchen, utilities extraRs.45,288 to Rs.65,417NOK 4,500 to 6,500
Food (minimum estimate)Rs.36,231NOK 3,600
Public transport (minimum estimate)Rs.5,032NOK 500
Semester fee to the student welfare body Sit (each semester)Rs.7,045NOK 700
Source: NTNU, Living in Trondheim: practical matters. INR at Rs.10.06 per NOK.

Housing, food, and transport together come to Rs.86,551 to Rs.1.07 lakh (NOK 8,600 to 10,600) a month, before utilities, books, and insurance. The NTNU semester fee goes to Sit, not to NTNU. UDI's official benchmark is higher at Rs.1.56 lakh (NOK 15,488) a month, so use it as your safe planning figure.

For city comparisons, read our cost of living in Norway guide.

Exchange rate used: Rs.10.06 per NOK (as of 29 September 2026). Verify the current rate before finalizing your budget.

Counselor insight: NTNU's rent range is for a single room with a shared bath and kitchen. If you picture a private one-bedroom flat, your monthly budget will sit well above these numbers, so decide early whether you will apply for student housing or a shared flat.

Proof of Funds Added to NTNU Trondheim Fees: Amount, Rules, and Documents

Every Indian applicant must meet the Norway student visa proof of funds rule on top of tuition. UDI has not published the 2027-28 amount, so the 2026/27 requirement is the blueprint: Rs.17.15 lakh (NOK 170,368) for a full academic year. NTNU's own financing page still displays the older Rs.16.79 lakh (NOK 166,859), so quote the UDI figure in your planning.

  • Show a bank statement not older than three months, in any currency and in English, or a signed sponsor letter with the sponsor's statement, or a scholarship confirmation.
  • The funding document cannot be dated before 1 September of the application year.
  • After admission, you transfer the full amount to NTNU's deposit account before arrival, and it is paid back to you when the semester starts.
  • Funding proof is an admission requirement, so it cannot be sent after the deadline.

Counselor insight: The 1 September date on the funding statement catches early planners. A statement generated in August for a 1 December application is invalid, so generate it in autumn, once the balance already matches the required amount.

Total First-Year Budget: NTNU Trondheim Fees Plus Funds and Semester Fees

Year one at NTNU requires more than just the tuition line. This table shows the money you need to have ready for the two categories that most Indian applicants fall into.

ComponentCategory 1 ProgramCategory 2 program
Tuition, year oneRs.17.74 lakh (NOK 176,300)Rs.20.69 lakh (NOK 205,600)
Living funds shown and deposited (paid back to you)Rs.17.15 lakh (NOK 170,368)Rs.17.15 lakh (NOK 170,368)
Semester fees, two semestersRs.14,090 (NOK 1,400)Rs.14,090 (NOK 1,400)
Total to have readyRs.35.03 lakh (NOK 348,068)Rs.37.98 lakh (NOK 377,368)
Sources: NTNU Tuition fees; UDI; NTNU, practical matters. INR at Rs.10.06 per NOK; 2026/27 blueprint.

Only tuition and semester fees are spent on the university. The funds are your living money, but they must sit in the deposit account before the permit is granted. In year two, NTNU again asks for proof of financing with the renewal, and tuition is repriced for inflation.

Compare the total with the German route in our Germany vs Norway master's cost comparison before you commit.

Counselor insight: Families often plan for Rs.17 lakh of tuition and overlook that another Rs.17.15 lakh must be in the account at the same time. Line up both amounts, plus a currency buffer, before you apply.

Deadlines and Payment Calendar for NTNU Trondheim Fees (2027 Entry)

The NTNU application deadline for applicants from outside the EU/EEA is 1 December, within a window that opens on 1 November, and every document must be uploaded by then. For the August 2027 entry, that is 1 December 2026. NTNU's page still shows the previous cycle's dates, so confirm them when it updates.

Sources: NTNU, How to apply; NTNU FAQ; NTNU, Tuition fees; NTNU, arrival checklist. Dates follow the last published cycle and shift by year.

Counselor insight: Final-year students often wait for the final marksheet before applying. NTNU accepts a provisional certificate at the deadline and asks for the official diploma by 1 February, so waiting only puts the December deadline at risk.

Scholarships and Funding Beyond NTNU Trondheim Fees

NTNU states that it offers no scholarships that cover tuition and no discounts or installment plans. Norway's government also runs no scholarship open to all international students. NTNU scholarships for Indian students therefore come only from outside NTNU. Three routes still matter:

  • Exemption routes: Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, Nordic Five Tech, and full-degree scholarships from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills remove tuition, and PhD candidates pay none.
  • Part-time work: a study permit allows up to 20 hours a week, including remote work, and full-time work on holidays. This arrangement supports daily costs but cannot cover tuition of Rs.17.74 lakh or more.
  • After graduation: you can apply for a job seeker permit before the student permit expires.

Read our Norway job seeker visa guide and study in Norway cost and scholarships overview.

Counselor insight: Treat any page that promises an NTNU fee waiver with suspicion. NTNU's own tuition and financing pages say it does not offer scholarships that cover fees, so a waiver claim needs a link to ntnu.edu before you plan around it.

Is NTNU Trondheim Worth Its Fees? Decision Guide for Indian Applicants

The QS World University Rankings 2027 place NTNU 264th globally (QS). Rank does not settle affordability, so match your situation to these scenarios:

  • If you are a final-year BTech student graduating in May or June 2027 and want a technology master's, you fall in Category 2: Rs.41.38 lakh (NOK 411,200) for two years at 2026/27 rates, plus Rs.17.15 lakh in living funds. Apply by 1 December 2026 with a provisional certificate and IELTS 6.5 in every band.
  • If you are a working professional weighing a business-related master's, compare Category 1 at Rs.17.74 lakh (NOK 176,300) a year with the separate International Business and Marketing price of Rs.6.21 lakh (NOK 61,705), which is Rs.12.42 lakh (NOK 123,410) over two years.
  • If your family can arrange less than Rs.35 lakh for year one, Category 1 and 2 programs are out of reach.

Compare the lower-priced programs, browse the top universities in Norway, and check cost of living in Europe figures for other countries.

Counselor insight: Rank programs by fee line before you rank them by content. A Category 2 technology master's costs Rs.5.90 lakh (NOK 58,600) more over two years than a Category 1 program, and a shortlist built on rank alone hides that gap.

What to Do When NTNU Trondheim Fees, Funds, or Visa Go Wrong

SituationWhat NTNU says
UDI rejects your study permitEverything you paid is refunded except bank fees, even after 1 September, with the official UDI decision letter
You withdraw before 1 AugustFull tuition refund, excluding bank fees
You withdraw from 1 August to 1 SeptemberRs.50,320 (NOK 5,000) is deducted and the rest is refunded
You withdraw after 1 SeptemberNo tuition refund
You miss the invoice deadlineYou lose the study place unless an exemption is granted
The rupee weakens before you transfer fundsThe NOK amount can fall short because exchange rates vary; keep a buffer
Your admission letter shows no feeA non-EU applicant must report this to NTNU at opptak@ntnu.no
Sources: NTNU, Tuition fees, NTNU FAQ.

Counselor insight: Permit decisions can land close to the 1 August and 1 September cut-offs. Apply to UDI as soon as tuition is paid and the deposit is in place: a refused permit is refunded in full, but a late voluntary withdrawal is not.

3 Takeaways on NTNU Trondheim Fees

  1. Budget the published price, not zero. NTNU Trondheim fees run from Rs.2.66 lakh to Rs.53.20 lakh a year on 2026/27 rates, and most programs sit at Rs.17.74 lakh or Rs.20.69 lakh.
  2. Line up the funds before 1 December. Show Rs.17.15 lakh (NOK 170,368) in an English-language statement dated on or after 1 September, and keep IELTS 6.5 in every band ready.
  3. Apply first, then confirm the 2027-28 fee in your admission letter. The invoice comes only after you accept, so the final number reaches you before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions About NTNU Trondheim Fees

  • Is NTNU free for Indian students?

Degree students from India pay tuition because NTNU charges everyone with citizenship outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. The 2026/27 category prices run from Rs.17.74 lakh to Rs.53.20 lakh a year, and five master's programs cost less. PhD candidates, Erasmus Mundus students, and a few listed groups are exempt.

  • How much are NTNU Trondheim fees for Indian students in INR?

On 2026/27 rates, NTNU fees in INR are Rs.17.74 lakh for business and humanities, Rs.20.69 lakh for technology and natural sciences, and Rs.53.20 lakh for medicine-related programs. Five master's programs charge Rs.2.66 lakh to Rs.6.21 lakh. NTNU has not published 2027-28 rates yet.

  • What is the total cost of studying at NTNU for one year?

Plan to have Rs.35.03 lakh to Rs.37.98 lakh ready for year one: tuition, the UDI living-funds requirement of Rs.17.15 lakh, and two semester fees. The funds are paid back to you as living money after arrival, but they must be in the deposit account first.

  • Does NTNU offer scholarships for Indian students?

NTNU says it offers no scholarships that cover tuition and no discounts or installment plans. Norway's government also has no scholarship open to every international student. Exemptions exist for Erasmus Mundus and Nordic Five Tech students and for PhD candidates.

  • How much bank balance is needed for a Norway student visa?

UDI's 2026/27 requirement is Rs.17.15 lakh (NOK 170,368) for a full academic year, or Rs.1.56 lakh (NOK 15,488) a month. UDI sets the 2027-28 amount later, and it changes yearly. NTNU asks for a statement showing the sum when you apply, then a transfer after admission.

  • Can Indian students work part-time while studying at NTNU?

A study permit lets you work up to 20 hours a week, including remote work, and full-time during holidays. That income helps with daily costs but will not cover NTNU Trondheim fees of Rs.17.74 lakh or more. Graduates can apply for a job seeker permit before the student permit expires.

  • Will NTNU fees drop for 2027 entry?

That is not known yet. Norway's law changed on 1 August 2026, so universities may set lower prices, and Stavanger has done so. NTNU's page still lists only 2026/27 rates and says prices rise with inflation each year. Apply by 1 December, then read the fee in your admission letter before accepting.

  • What is the last date to apply to NTNU from India?

Applicants from outside the EU/EEA apply between 1 November and 1 December, and every document must be uploaded by that date. For the August 2027 entry, that means 1 December 2026, with results around the end of February. Missing documents can lead to rejection, so upload your test score and funds statement early.

  • What if my visa is refused after I pay NTNU tuition fees?

NTNU refunds everything you paid, except bank fees, if UDI rejects your study permit, even after 1 September, but you need the official decision letter. Other withdrawals depend on timing: a full refund before 1 August, Rs.50,320 (NOK 5,000) deducted until 1 September, and nothing afterwards.
