  • Two routes exist: UK MBBS from Class 12 or UKMLA after Indian MBBS.
  • MGs still book PLAB 1 (AKT) and PLAB 2 (CPSA) on the GMC portal; both now follow the UKMLA content map.
  • GMC qualification verification uses MyIntealth portal, where you establish an EPIC Portfolio and send an EPIC Report to the GMC.
  • NHS Foundation Year 1 basic salary is ยฃ40,190 (Rs. 51.60 lakh) per year from April 2026.

UK Medical School Entry Requirements for Indian Students

UK medical schools have consistent core requirements:

  • Class 12 PCB at very high grades (A-Level AAA equivalent; competitive schools often require A*AA)
  • UCAT, taken in Julyโ€“September of the entry year. BMAT was discontinued in 2024; Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial now all use UCAT
  • UCAS application: 4,000-character personal statement and one academic reference
  • Relevant clinical exposure: hospital shadowing, GP visits, hospice or care home volunteering
  • IELTS Academic 7.0โ€“7.5 overall (minimum 7.0 per band) for the Student Visa

Apply to a maximum of four programs through UCAS. UCAS allows 5 choices total, but medicine applicants can select a maximum of 4 medicine programs; the 5th choice (if used) must be a different subject.

ย The UCAS Medicine deadline is 15 October each year. Interviews use the MMI format. Acceptance rates at Oxford and Cambridge are approximately 10โ€“12%.

1. Foundation Year MBBS: Students who don't meet standard entry requirements can apply for a 6-year MBBS with Foundation Year. The University of Central Lancashire offers this route specifically for international students.

2. Intercalated degree: An optional extra year (BSc or MSc) during the 5-year MBBS extends the program but strengthens specialty training applications.

3. Health screening: All medical students are screened for TB, hepatitis B/C, and HIV at enrollment. A positive result does not automatically bar you but may affect certain placements.

4. NEET-UG: Not required by UK medical schools. Required only if you plan to return to India and want NMC recognition.

Fees are on university admissions pages for 2026 entry. Oxford and Cambridge fees cover university tuition only; separate College fees apply. Verify all fees directly before applying.ย

Note: INR conversions use a fixed rate of ยฃ1 = Rs.128.46; verify the current rate before finalising your budget.ย

International seats are capped at approximately 7.5% of total places. A UCAT score of 2700+ is typically needed for top schools.

Counselor insight: UCAT is nothing like NEET. It tests abstract reasoning, situational judgment, and quantitative reasoning under strict time pressure. Most successful applicants spend four to six months preparing, starting in January of their Class 12 year.

How to Become a Doctor in UK from India: The UKMLA Routeย

This process is for Indian doctors who have completed their MBBS and a 12-month internship in India.

Step 1: English Proficiency

The GMC accepts two tests:

  • IELTS Academic: 7.5 overall, with no band below 7.0 in a single sitting. Valid two years.
  • OET Medicine: Grade B (350+) in all four components. Valid two years.

Most Indian MBBS graduates prefer OET because the content uses real clinical scenarios (ward rounds, referrals, discharge summaries) that are directly relevant to practice.

Step 2: MyIntealth Qualification Verification

The GMC requires primary source verification of your degree through EPIC, accessed via the MyIntealth portal (operated by Intealth, the parent of ECFMG). MyIntealth replaced the old EPIC standalone web interface in 2024; the EPIC Portfolio and EPIC Report remain the core deliverables.

You establish an EPIC Portfolio on MyIntealth, submit your degree for primary source verification, and then request an EPIC Report for the GMC once it's verified.

DocumentIndia-Specific Detail
MBBS degree certificateAttested: The institution must be on GMC's acceptable list via wdoms.org
Academic transcripts (all years)Signed and stamped by university registrar
Internship completion certificateConfirms 12-month post-graduation internship
Certificate of Good Standing (CoGS)From NMC or State Medical Council; must be dated within 3 months of GMC application
PassportThe name must match all documents exactly
English test certificateIELTS or OET, within 2-year validity
TB test certificateFrom a UKVI-approved clinic in India

Timing: Budget 6โ€“12 weeks for MyIntealth to clear. Start as soon as your internship certificate is in hand. Order CoGS 8 weeks before your planned GMC application date, not at the start, as it has a 3-month validity window.

Step 3: UKMLA: The Assessment That Replaced PLAB

From 2024, UKMLA is the standard licensing route for new IMGs. The GMC still labels the exams PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 in its booking system, but both now follow the UKMLA content map: 430 clinical conditions are tested at the Foundation Year 2 level. Candidates with a valid PLAB 1 pass from before 2024 may complete the old route.

AKT (Applied Knowledge Test)

  • 180 single-best-answer questions, 3 hours
  • Taken in India at British Council centres; available four times per year
  • Fee: ยฃ283 (Rs.36,354)
  • Your AKT pass is valid for 2 years from the date you sat the exam (not the date results were issued). You should aim to pass CPSA within this window. Book CPSA as soon as AKT results are confirmed; do not wait.

CPSA (Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment)

  • 18-station OSCE; held only at the GMC's Manchester assessment centre
  • Standard Visitor Visa required for the trip: ยฃ115 (Rs.14,773)
  • Fee: ยฃ1,036 (Rs.133,084)
  • Book well ahead: slots fill months in advance

AKT must be passed before booking CPSA. Both parts are required for GMC registration. 2025 pass rates: 62.2% AKT, 59.8% CPSA. Use post-2024 UKMLA question banks only; pre-2024 PLAB materials are misaligned with the current content map.

Counselor insight: Most CPSA failures are not about clinical knowledge. Indian doctors trained in directive consultation styles often struggle with the UK patient-centered OSCE framework. Four to six weeks of supervised UK-style OSCE role-play substantially improves first-attempt pass rates.

Step 4: GMC Full Registration

Submit documents via GMC Online, complete the Digidentity Wallet digital identity check, and attend an in-person identity verification at the GMC's London office.

Fee: ยฃ433 (Rs.55,623). Annual retention: ยฃ433 (reduced to ยฃ166 if income is below ยฃ40,000).

Indian MBBS graduates with a completed internship receive full (not provisional) GMC registration. This means you are not eligible for UKFP FY1, which is designed only for doctors who have not yet completed an internship. Your first NHS role will be a service post: Trust Grade Doctor, Clinical Fellow, or similar.

Approved Practice Setting (APS): New full registrants must work in an APS-approved organization. All NHS Trusts automatically hold APS status, so any standard NHS job satisfies this requirement. Verify before accepting roles at private clinics or non-NHS providers.

Step 5: NHS Jobs and the Health and Care Worker Visa

Search vacancies at NHS Jobs. Your employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) enabling the Health and Care Worker Visa.

Key advantages for Indian doctors:

  • Full IHS exemption: Standard Skilled Worker visa holders pay ยฃ1,035/year per person. NHS doctors and all dependants pay zero, saving Rs.1,32,869 per person per year
  • Dependents: Spouse and children under 18 may accompany and work freely
  • 5-year path to ILR, then British citizenship one year after

Doctor roles (SOC 2211โ€“2212) remain fully open to overseas applicants in 2026. Only care worker codes (6135/6136) were closed in July 2025; this decision does not affect medical practitioners.

What the 2026 Medical Training Prioritization Bill Means for You

The Bill prioritizes UK and Irish graduates, plus those with ILR or British citizenship, for formal specialty training posts. It does not affect GMC registration or your ability to work as a doctor in UK. It changes where you start, not whether you can build a career. Indian students who complete their MBBS at a UK medical school (Route A) are classified as UK graduates under the Act and are treated as Priority 1 for specialty training equivalent to any domestic UK graduate.

Most Indian MBBS graduates who become doctors in the UK in 2026โ€“27 begin in Trust Grade Doctor or Clinical Fellow posts: substantive NHS roles with full salary and pension. The approach is to build an NHS portfolio, pass Royal College exams (MRCP, MRCS, or MRCGP), and apply for specialty training once significant NHS experience is established.

Which Route to Become a Doctor in UK Is Right for You?ย

  1. If you are an Indian Class 12 student with 85%+ in PCB and have cleared NEET-UG 2026: The UK MBBS route works if your family can sustain Rs.50โ€“78 lakh per year for five years. Start UCAT preparation in January; the October UCAS deadline is firm.
  2. If you are an Indian MBBS graduate with an internship completed and IELTS 7.5+ in hand: Begin MyIntealth verification today. Your realistic timeline to a first NHS job is 12โ€“18 months from submission.
  3. If you passed PLAB 1 before 2024 within the 3-year validity window: Book CPSA as your next step. Check your validity date on GMC Online first.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong

  • AKT failure: Request your domain breakdown from the GMC. The most common cause is using pre-2024 PLAB materials focused on recall, not the clinical reasoning the current AKT demands. Allow 6โ€“8 weeks before retaking the test. If your AKT pass is within 6 months of expiry, prioritize CPSA booking immediately regardless of other preparation timelines.
  • CPSA failure: The most common cause is communication structure, not clinical knowledge. Indian doctors trained in directive consultation styles often struggle with the UK patient-centered OSCE framework. Undertake structured UK-style OSCE role-play before re-sitting. Budget for a second Manchester trip.
  • MyIntealth delays: If verification exceeds 12 weeks, contact the GMC verification team through GMC Online. Most delays are from name discrepancies between the degree certificate and the passport or missing internship documents.
  • Standard Visitor Visa refusal for CPSA: Reapply with your AKT pass certificate, GMC CPSA booking confirmation, a cover letter stating the one-time exam purpose, and strong evidence of ties to India.
  • NHS job search slow: Apply immediately after GMC registration is confirmed. The market is strongest outside London. Target trusts in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Belfast; London's teaching hospitals are significantly more competitive.

How to Become a Doctor in UK from India: 3 Steps to Start Nowย

  1. Confirm your route. Class 12 student: Start UCAT prep in January and register for NEET-UG. Indian MBBS graduate with an internship certificate: register on MyIntealth today. One step unlocks everything else on the path to becoming a doctor in UK from India.
  2. The UKMLA exam costs under Rs. 4 lakh all-in for a single-attempt pass. Use only post-2024 UKMLA question banks for AKT, and allow four to six weeks of structured OSCE practice for CPSA. The 2025 pass rates (62% AKT, 60% CPSA) reflect preparation quality, not background.
  3. The 2026 Medical Training Prioritization Bill changes where you start, not whether you can become a doctor in UK from India. Trust Grade Doctor and Clinical Fellow posts carry a full NHS salary and pension. Building MRCP, MRCS, or MRCGP credits during these years is the proven route to competitive specialty training.

Frequently Asked Questions About How to Become a Doctor in UK from India

  • How long does it take to become a doctor in UK from India?

Via UK MBBS: 7โ€“8 years from Class 12 to GMC registration. Via UKMLA after Indian MBBS: a first NHS job in 12โ€“18 months. According to NHS Health Careers, it takes a total of 12โ€“16 years from MBBS to reach consultant level.

  • Is an Indian MBBS degree valid in the UK to practice medicine?

Yes, if it's from a university listed at wdoms.org. The degree alone does not permit practice. You must pass the UKMLA (AKT + CPSA), verify through MyIntealth, and hold full GMC registration.

  • Has PLAB been replaced by UKMLA?

For new IMGs from 2024, yes. The GMC still uses PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 as exam labels, but both follow the UKMLA content map. AKT is the new PLAB 1; CPSA replaces PLAB 2. Candidates with a valid pre-2024 PLAB 1 pass may complete the old route.ย

  • What is MyIntealth and how does it differ from EPIC?

MyIntealth is the current GMC qualification verification platform, run by Intealth (ECFMG's parent). It replaced EPIC; previously verified credentials migrate automatically. Submit your degree, transcripts, and internship certificate through MyIntealth. Budget 6โ€“12 weeks for clearance.

  • What English score does the GMC require?

The GMC requires an IELTS Academic score of 7.5 overall, with no band below 7.0, or an OET Medicine Grade B (350+) in all four components. Both are valid for two years.

  • Do I need NEET to study MBBS in UK?

No. UK medical schools use UCAT, not NEET. NEET-UG is only required if you plan to return to India and need NMC recognition to practice or pursue PG training there.

  • What salary does a doctor in UK earn?

From April 2026, FY1 basic salary is ยฃ40,190 (Rs. 51.60 lakh); total with supplements averages ยฃ47,400 (Rs. 60.86 lakh). Consultants earn ยฃ113,565โ€“ยฃ150,569 basic (Rs.1.46โ€“1.93 cr), averaging ยฃ161,600 total.

  • What is the UK Foundation Program, and can Indian MBBS graduates apply?

The UKFP is a 2-year postgraduate training programme (FY1 + FY2) for graduates who have not yet completed internship. Indian MBBS graduates who completed a 12-month Indian internship receive full (not provisional) GMC registration and are not eligible for FY1. Their first UK role is typically a trust grade doctor or FY2 standalone post.

  • What happens if I fail UKMLA or my documents are delayed?

AKT fail: request a domain breakdown, update your preparation materials, and re-sit after 6โ€“8 weeks. CPSA fail: focus on UK communication structure, not clinical content; budget for a second Manchester trip. MyIntealth delay: contact GMC verification via GMC Online after 12 weeks. Visa refusal for CPSA: Reapply with exam documentation and strong evidence of India ties.
