Is a Free OET Mock Test Close Enough to the Real Exam?

A free OET mock test is a timed practice run of OET (Occupational English Test), the English exam for healthcare workers, built from OET’s own free sample tests. Will it feel like the real thing? For format, timing, and question types, it gets close, because each pack is made for your profession.

What it can’t give you is an official score. On the real exam, two OET assessors mark your Writing and Speaking, so your own marks there are an estimate. Judge a free OET mock test by what it trains, not by the number it gives you.

Each sub-test is one of OET's four separately scored parts: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. How hard OET is for you depends on your starting English, so your first mock shows where you stand. Check whether you need OET before you spend weeks practicing. If you want to know who can sit it and what it costs first, our OET exam overview covers both.

Which OET Mock Tests Are Free and Official, and What Does Each Cover?

Download your first pack from OET's preparation site, where the sample tests, starter course, and guides are free. A sample test is an official OET practice test, and it comes in versions that match how you'll sit the exam:

  • OET Test on Paper: this is Listening, Reading, and Writing on printed papers plus a face-to-face Speaking test, all at a test center.
  • OET Test on Computer: this is Listening, Reading, and Writing on screen at a venue, plus Speaking with a live interlocutor (the OET person who plays the patient), which is usually taken online.
  • OET@Home: this is the computer test taken at home with online supervision, and it uses the computer samples.

The Nursing and Medicine packs each come with an answer key, which is the official list of correct answers for Listening and Reading. Their computer packs add a role card, which is the card describing your role and the patient's situation. A role-play is the short, acted conversation, about 5 minutes, that the card sets up.

Intro to OET is OET's free online course on the format and how answers are assessed. OET Pulse is a 30-minute check of your reading, listening, and language knowledge. It isn't on OET's free list, so check its price first.

Use this table to pick the pieces of your free OET mock test. Start at the top.

Your free OET mock test lives in the first two rows.

My insight: Treat each official pack as a one-time measurement. Once you've seen its questions, a second attempt tells you less, so don't use up every pack in your first week.

Free OET Mock Test on Computer or Paper: Which Should You Practice?

Practice in the mode you'll book. OET's paper and computer versions differ in how you answer and how you write. Ask your regulator (the nursing or medical council that will accept your result) whether it limits which test mode you can use, then match every mock to that choice. A free OET mock test only rehearses the real day if the screen or paper in front of you matches it.

Part A is the first of three parts in Listening and Reading; in Reading, it's a quick task with a strict 15-minute limit. Follow the column for your booked mode.

One trap: cut, copy, paste, and Ctrl + F work in the samples but are locked on test day, so practice without them. The computer samples also don't record your answers, so write them down separately and check them against the answer key. Nurses should start with the Nursing packs, and OET for nurses explains the profession-specific tasks. Doctors take the Medicine packs, and OET for doctors shows how Writing and Speaking change.

How Long Is Each Part of an OET Mock Test?

Block about 2 hours 25 minutes for Listening, Reading and Writing, then about 20 minutes for Speaking. Those totals add up the official times, and your free OET mock test should follow them with no extra minutes. Each sub-test follows the standard exam pattern, so a good mock mirrors the real layout.

Use the table as your timer sheet. The last column is the rule you should rehearse.

How to Run a Free OET Mock Test at Home, Step by Step

Follow these nine steps, which copy OET's own advice on taking a sample test. Keep a wall clock in view. Treat it like the real day.

  1. Pick your booked mode: run your free OET mock test on screen for a computer or on printed papers for paper.
  2. Clear the desk: on paper, keep pens, pencils, an eraser, a sharpener and water; on computer, keep only water.
  3. Remove the extras: no phone, no dictionary, and no highlighters.
  4. Watch the clock: from your second pack, use the exact limits above and add no extra time.
  5. Listening: play each recording once; in Part A, write the words you hear, not a paraphrase.
  6. Check time on paper: use only the 2 minutes at the end of Listening to check answers.
  7. Reading: stop Part A at 15 minutes and put it away before Parts B and C.
  8. Writing: read the case notes for 5 minutes, then write 180-200 words in the remaining 40 minutes.
  9. Speaking: make notes on the role card, then do two 5-minute role-plays with a partner or teacher playing the patient. Record them, since the real test is recorded for two assessors.

My insight: Take your first free OET mock test untimed to learn the question types, then keep strict timing from pack two onward. A rushed first attempt mostly teaches you panic, not English.

How to Score Your OET Mock Test Using Official Guidance

Mark Listening and Reading exactly with the answer key. Treat your Writing and Speaking marks as a rough guide. Score every free OET mock test the same way so you can compare packs.

Each sub-test is reported on the 0-500 scale, which is OET's score range in steps of ten, with grades from A (highest) to E (lowest). Grade B is the grade associated with a score of 350. Assessment criteria are the official checklists OET assessors use for Writing and Speaking. Use the right-hand column as your marking method.

Sub-testHow OET marks itGrade B guideHow you self-check
Listening42 questions, 1 mark eachTypically at least 30 marksCount marks with the answer key
Reading42 questions, 1 mark eachTypically at least 30 marksCount marks with the answer key
Writing6 criteria, two assessors2 of 3 for Purpose, 5 of 7 for the restScore your letter on the six criteria
Speaking4 linguistic criteria, each marked out of 6; 5 clinical communication categories, each marked out of 3Mostly 5 of 6 and 2 of 3Replay your recording against the criteria

Sources: OET results and scoring

Listening and Reading give you a firm number. Writing and Speaking give you a direction. The 30-mark guide moves slightly between test versions, so treat it as a target, not a fixed line.

  • Writing criteria: Purpose, Content, Conciseness and Clarity, Genre and Style, Organization and Layout, and Language.
  • Nurses: once your letter is done, compare it with sample letters for nurses.
  • Doctors: check each draft against sample letters for doctors.
  • Referral tasks: if the case notes call for a referral, study the referral letter format in the Writing Guide.
  • Outside mark: OET suggests finding a teacher who can help with test-taking and language skills.

My insight: Never average your four mock scores into one number. The weakest sub-test usually decides whether you're ready, so build your next two weeks around that one part.

A Free OET Mock Test Schedule You Can Follow

Plan to take one practice test every 2-3 weeks. Spend the days between fixing the skills behind your errors. That rhythm comes from OET's own sample-test advice. At that pace, the five Nursing paper packs alone give you a free OET mock test cycle of about 10-15 weeks.

  1. Week 1: finish the Intro to OET course and take your first pack untimed.
  2. Weeks 2-3: go through every wrong answer with the answer key and criteria, then work on those skills.
  3. Week 4: take a fully timed pack using the nine steps above.
  4. After that: repeat one timed pack every 2-3 weeks, with skill work in between.

OET also warns that taking test after test only improves your test-taking skills, not your language skills. The work you do between packs is what improves your score. Don't skip it just to squeeze in an extra mock.

Should You Use Third-Party OET Mock Tests Too?

Finish the official packs first. OET says the materials on its website and in the OET Store are the best quality resources available. It also warns that unofficial materials from the internet often don't reflect the real test.

Before you search for another free OET mock test online, work through every official pack for your profession. Should you add a resource later, be sure to check it against OET's published timings and criteria. A free OET mock test from an unknown source is extra practice, never a score prediction.

If you're still choosing between exams, read the OET vs IELTS comparison first.

What If Your Free OET Mock Test Score Is Too Low?

A low mock score is a signal, not a verdict. It shows which sub-test needs work before you pay for the real exam. Match your problem to the fix below.

  • Low Listening or Reading: sort wrong answers by Part A, B, and C; spelling mistakes cost marks in both, and grammar mistakes cost marks in Listening.
  • Low Writing or Speaking: rescore against the official criteria, then ask a teacher for an outside mark.
  • Regulator wants a higher grade: ask your regulator for its minimum score.
  • Still not ready: delay the booking and run another free OET mock test after two or three more weeks of skill work.
  • A real result looks wrong: you can request a remark within 72 hours of receiving results, as OET's scoring page explains.

Practice is free, but the real test is not, so check current OET exam fees before booking. Once your mock scores look steady, pick a slot from the upcoming exam dates. Regulators also set how old a result may be, so read the score validity rules before you time your test.

For help, contact your regulator about score requirements, OET support about booking problems, and your Leap Scholar counselor about your plan.

3 Takeaways on Your OET Mock Test

  1. Start free and official: build every free OET mock test from OET's own sample packs, in the mode you booked.
  2. Copy the real rules: keep the exact timings, the allowed items, and one-time listening, with no extra minutes.
  3. Score honestly, then fix one thing: mark Listening and Reading with the key, Writing and Speaking with the criteria, and work on the weakest sub-test first.

Frequently Asked Questions About Free OET Mock Test

  • Is there a free OET mock test?

Yes, OET's preparation site gives away official sample tests for all four sub-tests for free. Pick your profession, download a pack with its answer key, and run it under the timings in this guide.

  • Can I get a free OET mock test for doctors as a PDF?

Doctors have their own Medicine sample packs on OET's sample-test pages. The computer packs each come with an answer key and a Speaking role card, while paper packs download as files you can print. Pick the version that matches the mode you will book.

  • Is there a free OET mock test with answers?

The Nursing and Medicine sample packs each come with an answer key, so a free OET mock test lets you mark Listening and Reading exactly. For Writing and Speaking, you score yourself against OET's official criteria, which gives a useful guide rather than an exact result.

  • How do I prepare for OET Medicine?

Start with the free Intro to OET course and the study guide, then work through the Medicine sample packs. Take one practice test every 2-3 weeks and use the time between on the skills behind your wrong answers. Stick to Medicine material, since the tasks are profession-specific.

  • Is the OET mock test for nurses free online?

Nurses get a generous free set: four computer sample tests with answer keys and Speaking role cards, plus five paper sample tests with questions, answer keys, and audio. That's nine packs, enough for about 18-27 weeks at one pack every two to three weeks.

  • What score should I aim for in a mock test?

If your regulator asks for Grade B, aim for 350 on OET's 0-500 scale, which typically needs at least 30 of 42 marks in Listening and Reading. Hit that level on more than one free OET mock test before you book, because one good result can be luck.

  • Is the OET@Home mock test the same as the free sample test?

Yes. OET@Home uses the same computer sample tests as the venue-based computer test, so the free packs rehearse it correctly. The one difference is supervision: OET@Home adds online invigilation, which the free samples don't simulate, so practice the content and timing, then read OET's own OET@Home setup requirements separately before booking.

  • Can I retake the same free OET mock test?

You can, but it won't tell you much. Once you've seen a pack's questions, a repeat attempt tests memory, not English. Treat each official sample test as a one-time measurement, and use the 2-3 week gap between timed mocks for skill work instead of redoing the same pack.
