Best Universities for Finance in UK: the 2027-28 Shortlist
Two rankings matter for finance, and they disagree on purpose. The QS Business Master’s Rankings 2026: Finance assessed 248 programs and weighs employability, alumni outcomes, value for money and thought leadership. The Financial Times Masters in Finance ranking splits pre-experience from post-experience programs and leans harder on salary uplift. A school can sit high on one and mid-table on the other. Warwick Business School, for instance, reports being 6th in the UK and 19th globally in QS 2026, and 5th in the UK and 37th globally in the FT Masters in Finance Pre-experience Ranking 2026.
In QS 2026, HEC Paris took first place, with Oxford Saรฏd second, MIT Sloan third, Cambridge Judge fourth, London Business School fifth and LSE joint seventh. Six UK schools sit inside the global top 20.

Here is the shortlist with fee status marked, because that is the part every other page gets wrong.
| Program | QS 2026 Finance | Tuition | Fee status for 2027-28 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oxford MSc Financial Economics | 2nd | Rs.84,96,306 (ยฃ66,690) | Published for Sept 2027 entry |
| Cambridge Judge MFin | 4th | Rs. 83,56,915 (ยฃ65,500) | Post-experience program |
| London Business School | 5th | Rs. 67,55,705 to Rs. 1,72,17,798 (ยฃ52,950 to ยฃ134,950) | Not captured |
| LSE MSc Finance | Joint 7th | Rs.64,97,400 (ยฃ51,000) | 2026/27 figure. LSE publishes its next table of fees in November |
| Imperial MSc Finance | Top 20 | Rs. 65,06,911 (ยฃ51,000) | Applications for Sept 2027 are open, fee not yet published |
| Warwick MSc Finance | 19th | Rs. 48,10,011 (ยฃ37,700) | Warwick states overseas fees for 2027-28 have not been set |
That last column is the whole point. Oxford has priced the 2027-28 cycle. Warwick says plainly that its overseas fees for that year are not set yet. Imperial has opened applications without publishing a fee. If you are reading a rupee figure for a 2027 intake anywhere else, check whether it is a real number or last year's carried forward.
Counselor insight: Do not build your loan application around a fee table you found on a comparison site. Open the school's own fees page and check which academic year the number belongs to. A 6% annual increase on Rs.65 lakh is Rs.4 lakh, which is roughly the gap between a sanctioned loan and a shortfall three weeks before your visa filing.
Pre-experience or post-experience: What you are Actually eligible for
A recurring waste of application fees among Indian applicants is applying to a program built for someone with five years in banking.
Pre-experience programs take recent graduates and early-career applicants. Oxford MFE fits here: the school reports a class of 88 with an average age of 22 and 94% international students. LSE MSc Finance, Imperial MSc Finance, Warwick MSc Finance and LBS Masters in Financial Analysis are also pre-experience.
Post-experience programs require several years of relevant finance work. Cambridge MFin and the LBS Masters in Finance sit here. They appear on lists of the best universities for finance in UK alongside pre-experience courses, which is how a final-year B.Com student ends up rejected without a proper reading of the requirements.
Counselor insight: Before you pay any application fee, find the class profile page and look at average age and average work experience. If the average age is 28 and you are 21, that is not a stretch application. It is an ineligible one.
Eligibility for the Best Universities for Finance in UK
The academic bar is a UK 2:1 or above, which generally maps to roughly 60% and above from an Indian university, though the top finance schools in practice want considerably more than the floor.
What Indian applicants should check specifically:
- Three-year versus four-year bachelor's. Most UK universities accept a three-year Indian bachelor's for master's entry. Some departments, particularly at Imperial and UCL, prefer a four-year degree or a first-class result from a three-year one. Check the department page, not the university page.
- Quantitative background. Oxford MFE, LSE MSc Finance and Imperial expect demonstrable mathematics, statistics or econometrics. A B.Com without quantitative modules is a weak file at these schools regardless of percentage.
- GMAT or GRE. Required or strongly expected at Oxford MFE and several LSE finance programs. Many other UK finance masters do not ask for it.
- English test. Take the version your university and UK Visas and Immigration accept. Confirm before you book.
- References. Usually two or three academic references for pre-experience programs and professional for post-experience.
Counselor insight: If your CGPA is borderline, a strong quantitative test score helps but does not rewrite your transcript. What moves the needle more is a maths-heavy elective list, a CFA Level 1 pass or a finance internship with something measurable in it. Build the file, not just the score.
What the Best Universities for Finance in UK Cost in INR for 2027-28
Tuition is the headline. It is not the number that decides whether you can go.
Oxford, September 2027 entry, nine months:
| Cost item | GBP | INR |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | ยฃ66,690 | Rs.84,96,306 |
| Deposit (part of tuition, due 30 days from offer) | ยฃ10,000 | Rs.12,74,000 |
| Living costs, 9 months at Oxford's published 2027-28 range | ยฃ13,275 to ยฃ19,575 | Rs.16,91,235 to Rs.24,93,855 |
| Student visa fee | ยฃ558 | Rs.71,089 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge, one year | ยฃ776 | Rs.98,862 |
| Indicative total | ยฃ81,299 to ยฃ87,599 | Rs.1,03,57,491 to Rs.1,11,60,112 |
Oxford publishes likely living costs of ยฃ1,475 to ยฃ2,175 per month for a single full-time student in 2027-28. A nine-month MFE therefore crosses one crore rupees on the low estimate. That is worth stating plainly because very few Indian families budget for a UK master's at that level.
LSE, London, using the 2026/27 fee as a placeholder:
| Cost item | GBP | INR |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition (2026/27 figure) | ยฃ51,000 | Rs.64,97,400 |
| Living funds you must evidence for the visa, London, 9 months | ยฃ13,761 | Rs.17,53,151 |
| Student visa fee | ยฃ558 | Rs.71,089 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge, one year | ยฃ776 | Rs.98,862 |
| Indicative total | ยฃ66,095 | Rs.84,20,503 |
The maintenance requirement is set by the Home Office and it decides your visa. For Student route applications from 11 November 2025, UKCISA confirms ยฃ1,529 per month for study in London and ยฃ1,171 outside London, for a maximum of nine months. That is ยฃ13,761 (Rs.17,53,151) for London and ยฃ10,539 (Rs.13,42,669) elsewhere, plus any tuition still unpaid on your CAS.
The evidence rules refuse more Indian applications than any other single requirement. UKCISA states the full amount must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days up to the closing balance date, never dipping below the threshold, with that closing date no more than 31 days old when you submit. Funds must be cash and immediately accessible.
The Student visa fee is ยฃ558 from 8 April 2026, and the Immigration Health Surcharge is ยฃ776 per year of permission granted.
Exchange rate used: Rs.127.40 per pound sterling. Verify the current rate against RBI reference rates before finalising your budget. On a Rs.85 lakh commitment, a two-rupee move is more than Rs.1.3 lakh.
Counselor insight: Watch the deposit clock, not just the deadline. Oxford's ยฃ10,000 deposit falls due 30 days from the date on your initial offer letter, and Imperial asks ยฃ6,500 to secure a place. Very few Indian families can free up Rs.8 to 13 lakh inside a month while a loan is still in sanction. Have the deposit money liquid before you apply, not after you are admitted.
Scholarships at the Best Universities for Finance in UK
Funding at this level is almost always partial. Plan for a discount, not a rescue.
- LSE Department of Finance scholarships: worth up to ยฃ25,000 (Rs.31,85,000), awarded on academic merit and financial need to successful applicants to the program, with multiple awards available.
- Warwick Business School scholarships: awards from 10% of tuition up to a maximum of 50% for exceptional candidates.
- Oxford Saรฏd: merit-based awards, but only Stage 1 and Stage 2 offer holders are eligible for University and college scholarships. Applying in Stage 3 removes you from consideration.
- Chevening: fully funded UK government award, requires Indian citizenship, an undergraduate degree, at least 2,800 hours of work experience and a commitment to return to India for two years.
- GREAT Scholarships: a minimum of ยฃ10,000 (Rs.12,74,000) at participating universities. Check the British Council India list for the current cycle.
See our guides to scholarships for masters in UK and top UK scholarships for Indian students for deadlines and the full list.
Counselor insight: Oxford's rule turns "apply early" from generic advice into money. Stage 1 closes on 21 October 2026 and Stage 2 on 6 January 2027. Missing both does not just cost you a seat, it removes you from every University and college scholarship. Treat the Stage 2 date as your real deadline.
Documents Checklist for UK Finance Masters Applications
| Document | What the school wants | India-specific detail |
|---|---|---|
| Degree transcript | Full transcript, all semesters, with an official English translation | Indian universities often take three to six weeks for consolidated transcripts. Order in June for an October deadline. |
| Degree certificate or provisional | Final or provisional | Convocation delays are normal. A provisional certificate is accepted at application stage. |
| Grading scale note | Not always requested | Add a one-page note explaining your CGPA scale and conversion. A 7.8 on 10 means nothing to a UK admissions officer without it. |
| CV | One or two pages | Name the employer's sector and scale. UK teams may not recognise Indian firm names. |
| Statement of purpose | Why finance, why this school, what next | Be specific about the desk or function. Generic finance ambition reads as unfocused at this level. |
| References | Two or three, usually academic | Indian professors are often slow with online reference portals. Give them six weeks. |
| GMAT or GRE | Where required | Book early. Test centre slots in metros fill for the October to January window. |
| English test | Approved test at the required level | Confirm the correct version with both the university and UKVI. |
| Financial evidence | Bank statements or a sanctioned loan letter | Must satisfy the 28-day rule. A loan disbursement alone does not, unless the money has sat in your personal account for 28 days. |
| Passport | Valid beyond your study period | Renew if under a year remains. |
Counselor insight: Scan and name every file properly before the portal opens. Applications that fail at the last hour are almost never rejected on merit, they are abandoned because a transcript is a phone photo at 8MB and the portal caps uploads at 2MB.
Month-by-Month Plan for September 2027 Entry
The dates below are Oxford's published 2027-28 cycle, which is the tightest calendar among the best universities for finance in UK. Use it as your anchor even if Oxford is not on your list.
| Timeline | Action |
|---|---|
| September 2026 | Applications open. Finalise your shortlist. Book GMAT or GRE and your English test. Begin the funds hold. |
| 21 October 2026 | Oxford MFE Stage 1 deadline. Recommendation letters and the Kira Talent assessment are due one week later, on 28 October. |
| November to December 2026 | LSE reviews on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline, so submit now rather than waiting. Oxford Stage 1 decisions are released by 11 December 2026. |
| 6 January 2027 | Oxford Stage 2 deadline. This is the last round with scholarship eligibility. |
| January to February 2027 | Offers and deposits. Apply for GREAT and school awards. |
| 3 March 2027 | Oxford Stage 3 deadline, with decisions by 16 April 2027. |
| March to April 2027 | Accept, pay the deposit, start or refresh the 28-day funds hold. |
| May to June 2027 | CAS issued. File the Student visa. You can apply up to six months before the course starts. |
| July to August 2027 | Serve notice if working, book accommodation, arrive up to one month before term. Oxford MFE begins 20 September 2027. |
Counselor insight: Rolling admissions sound relaxed and they are the more dangerous format. LSE closes MSc Finance when the program fills, with no announcement. Students who wait for a March deadline that does not exist find the program already closed in January.
Salaries after Studying at the Best Universities for Finance in UK
There are two honest answers to the salary question, and you need both.
Layer one, school employment reports. These report cohort means for a specific graduating class at a specific school. Oxford lists 2025 MFE recruiters including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Barclays, Blackstone, Citibank, HSBC, UBS and Standard Chartered, alongside McKinsey, BCG and EY-Parthenon. Reported means at Oxford, LBS and Imperial run well above general market figures.
Layer two, the market baseline. Prospects, the UK graduate careers service, puts investment analyst graduate trainee pay at ยฃ32,000 to ยฃ40,000 in London (Rs.40,76,800 to Rs.50,96,000) and ยฃ28,000 to ยฃ33,000 elsewhere in the UK (Rs.35,67,200 to Rs.42,04,200), both plus bonuses. With experience this rises to ยฃ65,000 to ยฃ100,000 (Rs.82,81,000 to Rs.1,27,40,000), and senior roles exceed ยฃ110,000.
Both layers are accurate. They measure different populations. A school mean is pulled up by the fraction of the class that lands front-office banking, and it reports only graduates who responded. The Prospects range describes what a graduate trainee is typically offered across the market. Plan your finances on layer two and treat layer one as the upside.
Counselor insight: Run your repayment maths at ยฃ35,000, not at the school mean. On a Rs.85 lakh outlay against a ยฃ35,000 first offer, you are looking at five or more years of disciplined saving on an education loan. If the plan only works at the brochure figure, it is not funded. See our guide to an education loan for studying in UK before you commit.
The 18-Month Graduate Route for 2027-28 Finance Graduates
For this cohort the post-study window is settled, and it is shorter than what older articles promise.
The Graduate Route lets you stay and work in the UK without employer sponsorship. UKCISA confirms that bachelor's and taught postgraduate graduates receive two years if they apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if they apply on or after 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates keep three years. The University of Warwick states the same rule.
A September 2027 start means you finish in mid to late 2028 and apply for the Graduate Route well after the cut-off. You will get 18 months. There is no timing decision to make and no window to beat.
For finance specifically this matters more than for most subjects, because UK graduate recruitment for banking and consulting runs on an autumn cycle that closes long before you graduate. See how the shorter window changes the maths in our cost of studying in UK guide.
Counselor insight: Applications for 2028 analyst intakes open in October 2027, which is your fourth week of term. Students who wait until the dissertation is submitted have already missed the main cycle and are competing for off-cycle roles with 18 months on the clock.
When Your UK Finance Application Goes Wrong
You are rejected at Oxford Stage 1. You cannot reapply in the same cycle. Submit to LSE, Imperial and Warwick immediately rather than waiting for other decisions.
Your three-year bachelor's is ruled ineligible. Check the specific department rather than accepting the university-level guidance. Where a four-year degree is genuinely required, a completed Indian master's or a strong PG diploma often satisfies it.
Your GMAT lands below the range. Retest once if there is time in the cycle, but redirect rather than repeat. Warwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bayes do not require it, and a strong application there beats a weak one at a school that does.
You miss the deposit deadline. Contact the admissions office the same day. Extensions are sometimes granted where a loan sanction is in progress and you can evidence it. Silence loses the seat.
Your funds evidence breaks because the balance dipped. Restart the 28-day hold from the day the balance was last correct, and tell your university so the CAS can be adjusted. There is no way to argue around a single day's dip.
You have no offer by mid-April. January intakes exist at several UK finance schools. Ask about deferral to January 2028 rather than losing the year, and use the extra months for a test retake or CFA Level 1.
3 Takeaways on Best Universities for Finance in UK
Choosing between the best universities for finance in UK for 2027-28 comes down to three decisions, and none of them is about the ranking table:
- Verify every fee against the school's own page and note the academic year. Oxford has published 2027-28 tuition at ยฃ66,690. Warwick has not set its 2027-28 overseas fees. Anything you read elsewhere may be a year old.
- Treat 6 January 2027 as your real deadline, not March. Oxford's scholarship eligibility ends after Stage 2, and LSE closes when it fills.
- Budget at Rs.84 lakh for London and over Rs.1 crore for Oxford, and repay at a ยฃ35,000 salary. If the plan only works on brochure numbers, it is not funded yet.

Frequently Asked Questions About Best Universities for Finance in UK
-
I missed the Oxford Stage 2 deadline. Is it worth applying in Stage 3?
You can still be admitted, but you lose eligibility for University and college scholarships, which are open only to Stage 1 and Stage 2 offer holders. If funding matters to your decision, use Stage 3 for Oxford while submitting seriously to LSE, Imperial and Warwick, where scholarship rounds may still be open.
-
How long can I stay in the UK after graduating in 2028?
Eighteen months. The Graduate Route gives two years only for applications submitted on or before 31 December 2026. Anyone applying from 1 January 2027 onwards receives 18 months, and a September 2027 intake falls well after that cut-off. Doctoral graduates still receive three years.
-
What salary can I expect after a UK finance master's?
Prospects puts investment analyst graduate trainee pay at ยฃ32,000 to ยฃ40,000 in London (Rs.40.77 to 50.96 lakh) and ยฃ28,000 to ยฃ33,000 elsewhere, plus bonuses, rising to ยฃ65,000 to ยฃ100,000 with experience. School employment reports show higher cohort means because they are pulled up by front-office placements. Plan on the market baseline.
-
How much money must I show for the UK student visa?
For applications from 11 November 2025, you must evidence ยฃ1,529 per month for London or ยฃ1,171 outside London, for up to nine months. That is ยฃ13,761 (Rs.17,53,151) or ยฃ10,539 (Rs.13,42,669), plus any tuition unpaid on your CAS. The funds must sit untouched for 28 consecutive days before you apply.
-
Can I apply with a three-year Indian bachelor's degree?
Most UK universities accept a three-year Indian bachelor's for master's entry. Some departments, particularly at Imperial and UCL, prefer a four-year degree or a first-class result from a three-year one. Requirements sit at department level rather than university level, so check the specific program page before applying.
-
Do I need a GMAT for a UK finance master's?
It depends on the school. Oxford MFE and several LSE finance programs require a GMAT or GRE. Warwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bayes generally do not. If your score is below the typical range, redirecting your applications is usually more effective than retesting late in the cycle.
-
Have UK universities published their 2027-28 finance fees?
Only some. Oxford has published 2027-28 tuition. Warwick states that its overseas fees for 2027-28 have not been set. Imperial has opened September 2027 applications without publishing a fee, and LSE releases its table of fees in November. Check the school's own fees page and note which academic year the figure belongs to.
-
How much does a finance master's cost at the best universities for finance in UK?
Oxford's MSc Financial Economics is Rs.84,96,306 (ยฃ66,690) for September 2027 entry. LSE MSc Finance was ยฃ51,000 for 2026/27, or Rs.64,97,400. With living costs, visa fee and health surcharge, budget Rs.84 lakh in London and over Rs.1 crore at Oxford for the full year.
-
Which are the best universities for finance in UK?
In the QS Business Master's Rankings 2026 for Finance, Oxford Saรฏd ranks second globally, Cambridge Judge fourth, London Business School fifth and LSE joint seventh, with Imperial and Warwick also in the global top 20. Six UK schools sit in that top 20. Rankings measure employability and alumni outcomes, so match them against your own profile and budget.
