So it was this morning when I was walking in the park at around 9 a.m. when I stumbled upon a brown shiny thing near the bushes. So I went over it and I found that it was a wallet of some man. It was a very heavy wallet in fact. I grabbed it, I picked it up and I saw that there was a lot of money in there with some valuable documents, IDs etc. The first thing that came to my mind is to find some police station but that was not the right thing to do. In fact, it's better to find a lost and found place of the park than to go to nearest police station because usually the police posts are very far away from any locality. So I went ahead and found the lost and found place for the park and I handed them the wallet. In fact, what happened next was interesting. The gentleman was right over there who lost his wallet. He shook my hand and took the wallet, checked all the IDs and then looked me into eyes and said thank you. He put his hands into his wallet and grabbed some money and handed me over saying that he is grateful for the kind deed that I did. I respectfully denied because it was of course my duty to return the wallet and getting some money for it would be just not right thing to do. So I told him it's just fine and he was okay with it. He gave me a green look with his eyes and he was also very grateful to find his wallet. He was very old gentleman. The whole experience was enthralling and it gave me a deep sense of satisfaction.

It is about 1 year ago when I was riding a bike along with my 2 or 3 friends. So there was one bike rider passing by our side, suddenly he dropped his wallet and after he passed I saw that his wallet was on the floor. Okay, so first time I found some item was when I was a kid in my school Children's Day Fair. I found a wallet from one of the girls in the school. I picked it up and I checked it. It had some money and cash in it. So immediately I could understand that someone had lost it or by mistake. And my instant reply was that I should try my best to give it back to that person because I knew how frustrating it can be when you lose all your money especially in a fair where you have come to enjoy the food and nothing could be done without money. So I straight away went to my principal's office to submit that wallet because I knew that anybody who would have lost it would come to the office in search of it and would inform the teachers and the principal that they have lost it. So when I was taking that purse to the office, that same girl who had lost it saw that purse in my hand and she came up to me and she was like, how can you do this? Did you snatch it from me? Where did you get it from? And I was baffled. I was like, why are you blaming me? I just found it on the ground and I was returning it to the principal. So I was helping you but instead she blamed me that I took it from her and while she was busy in some activity, I just picked up and I was running away with her money which was really really disappointing because I was trying to help her and she was instead blaming me. So I took her to my class teacher because my class teacher knew what type of a person I was. She had faith in me. So when I told her the whole story, she convinced that girl to count on the money and when she counted the money, she found that not even a single rupee was less which proved my innocence that I was just going to the principal's office to submit that in order to help her. Then she apologized to me and I think I did a great job in helping her.

Follow up questions

I believe the best way to handle lost items is to turn them in to a responsible authority, like a teacher or a lost and found. This ensures that the rightful owner has a chance to get their belongings back without any misunderstandings.

Have you ever lost something important? How did you feel?
Yes, I once lost my favorite watch. I felt anxious and upset because it held sentimental value. I searched everywhere and eventually found it under my bed. The relief I felt was immense, and it made me appreciate my belongings more.

It Ends With Us is a book I read recently. It's by the author Colleen Hoare. It's mainly a story about two teenagers, Atlas and Lily, and how they just handle their life going through high school, adolescence, and just domestic violence at home. Both of them come from very, very different families. However, they have one common determining factor between them, which is domestic violence. The abuse that they've seen their moms go through is just insane, and they connect through that on a different level. They're actually in the same high school, but they never speak to each other until Atlas actually crashes into an empty house next to Lily's villa. When Atlas is homeless and he doesn't have anywhere to go, he just comes and breaks into the house next to Lily's, and Lily helps him with all the daily necessities like clothes and food, medicines and stuff. Furthermore, their friendship blossoms into love, but it doesn't really fructify as Atlas has to leave. This book really gave me a lot of knowledge about domestic abuse and how to deal with it.

We all struggle upon things that people have lost. Once upon a time, I came over something that was, I suppose, lethal at that time that was lost by someone. It was a purse. I kind of recognized it when I saw it. It was a pink one, literally matching to the characteristics of the purse that I remember that of my friend, Kanga. So she went home that day. So I took the purse and I went to my teacher and gave it to her. And I said that, ma'am, and I said to her that I think that this is my friend's purse. I think she had lost it some way and I found it on the way to my hostel. So she said that she will take the necessary actions and later I came to know that she called my friend Kanga and asked about it. So she confirmed it by telling the color and the contents inside it and literally she kept the money for her selfies inside it that was around Rs. 65,000 as a DD, as a draft inside that purse. So she timed me a lot for picking up it and identifying it that it was hers and keeping it safe because she didn't know what she would have done if she lost that purse because she couldn't have paid the CEM fees and it could have led to a lot of chaos. So that was a pretty interesting experience for me.

After seeing that document, I found a contact number of that person, so I called that person and talked to that individual. The person told me that he lost his purse with mistake, so I talked to that person to come at my home and take their item. Next day, the person came at my home and I returned the lost item to person. If I talk about the experience, it was very amazing experience for me because it's like killing two birds with one stone. On the one hand, I returned that item, it gave me a mental peace of the mind. Additionally, he was more anxious because he was concerned whether his device will be it or not. After confirming it that it was his device, I was happy that I helped someone to get their belongings to the real owner. Moreover, I was not able to complete my shopping. So I asked few passengers around me, but no one claimed it, so I pick up it and open carefully to look any identification. Inside there was a few cash, few cards and one Aadhar card, and the name on that card is Rahul Deshmukh. Fortunately, I got one visiting card of the local company with the number. I call on that number and it goes to the man's office, and from that office I got his personal number. And when I call him, he was extremely relieved, and he told me that he just realized that he had dropped his wallet in the train. We decided to meet at the Lonavala station. When he arrived, he was thankful and extremely grateful. Even he offered me a small reward, but I politely declined that, because for me the mental peace and the grateful smile of that person is more than enough. The overall experience made me feel very good, and this reminded me that our small action can make a big impact in someone's life. The thing that I have picked up which someone had lost is the Hanuman Gadha which is a deity thing for us Hindus and I found it while I was walking in the evening on the road and then I saw it and picked it up. Without any further doubt I picked it up because it is not much loss for the person that has misplaced it because it would cost around 50 rupees that is no big deal. Why I picked it is because I strongly believe in God Hanumanji and it is an emotional thing to me. How I felt after picking it up is, I felt it is the blessing sent by the God Hanumanji because it could be anyone walking in that street but it was me who saw it first and picked it up. It is like God Hanumanji sent a blessing to me to be strong, to work hard and to achieve my goal. I take it this way and also I have kept it in my puja room that is the place we worship God and I still feel happy to have it in my hands.

I once found my boat headphones in my college courtyard. They were very expensive and apparently no one claimed them. So I claimed them and I've been using it for almost two years and they were great. And it's very surprising how I found them but it's also a great thing. The item that I found lost was a boat headphone. They were my favourite company and I always wanted to have them but they were obviously too expensive for me to buy. So I never actually had them. And finally I found them in my library courtyard. And I asked the guard if they were someone else's and nobody else wanted to claim them. So I happened to claim them and they worked fine. So I was very happy with it and I thought maybe I'll sometime find the owner. But I never did. And finally I kept using them. And it's been almost one, one and a half years. And I'm still using them and they work great. And I am so happy with them. It's very surprising and it's very amazing that I found them just randomly lying in a corner. But they're so very useful to me.
