University of Melbourne Scholarships: What Indian Students Actually Qualify For

Forget the “1,500 scholarships” headline number you’ll see everywhere. Most of those are department-level research top-ups worth a few thousand dollars. Here’s what really is relevant for an Indian applicant, by degree level:

Counselor insight: Most Indian applicants only check the university-wide scholarships page and miss that the residential colleges (Trinity, Ormond, Newman) run their separate scholarship applications with their deadlines, often 2-3 months before the university’s own scholarship rounds close.

The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship used to offer up to 25% fee sponsorship. From 2027 intakes, the benefit will change to a 20% fee sponsorship for the duration of the course, with the number of scholarships increasing to 225. You don’t apply for it separately: if you receive an offer for an Overseas Fee place in a bachelor’s degree, you’re automatically considered.

For Indian students specifically, the better-targeted award is the AG Whitlam International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship. It offers up to 50% fee remission for the duration of a Bachelor of Commerce (up to 300 points), and eligibility is restricted to citizens of specific countries; for Semester 2 intake, that includes India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. It also covers the Bachelor of Economics and the Bachelor of Management. Again, no separate form: it’s assessed automatically once you apply for the course.

Eligibility benchmark: Most Melbourne UG merit scholarships expect a CBSE/ISC score of 82% or higher, alongside IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) or equivalent TOEFL/PTE scores. Predicted marks don’t count. Selection is based on your final Class 12 results.

This area is where Melbourne’s funding is genuinely strong and where the old figures were most out of date. The Melbourne Research Scholarship offers a full fee offset for up to two years for a Masters by Research or up to four years for a doctoral degree, plus a stipend of $39,500 per year pro rata at the 2026 full-time rate. In INR terms at the current AUD/INR rate of roughly Rs.67, that’s approximately Rs.26.5 lakh a year, not the Rs.18 lakh figure previously published.

A relocation grant of $2,000 applies for students moving from within Australia outside Victoria or $3,000 for students moving from outside Australia, which covers most Indian applicants. Selection is based on academic merit from your last completed degree and your research potential, with factors like relevant professional experience and publications also considered.

Counselor insight: Indian applicants for research scholarships routinely lose a full selection round by submitting their course application without a research proposal attached. The scholarship assessment and course application happen together, not sequentially, so an incomplete research proposal at submission time can mean automatic exclusion from that round’s scholarship consideration, even if your course application itself is approved later.

If you’re a Class 12 student with 82%+ in CBSE or ISC applying for a Bachelor of Commerce for the July 2026 intake: you’re automatically eligible for consideration under both the Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship and the AG Whitlam scholarship, since India is on the eligible-country list specifically for Semester 2 intake. Apply for the course by the standard deadline; no separate scholarship form.

If you’re finishing a Master’s in India and want to apply for a PhD at Melbourne starting 2027: target the Melbourne Research Scholarship. Submit your course application with a complete research proposal well before the Round 1 deadline in October, since later rounds have fewer funded places left.

If you’ve already got an unconditional UG offer but missed the scholarship notification: successful candidates are notified of the outcome within five working days. You will receive a course offer, and unsuccessful candidates will not be notified separately. If it’s been more than a week since your offer with no scholarship email, you likely weren’t selected for that round. You can reapply for a later selection round if one exists for your intake.

Missing a selection round doesn’t disqualify you from the next one, but it does shrink your options. Melbourne runs scholarships in rounds with a fixed pool of funded places per round; later rounds simply have fewer places left, not zero.

If you’re not selected for a merit-based UG scholarship, check whether your specific course also has a faculty-level bursary (separate from the university-wide MIUS/AG Whitlam pool); these are less publicized and less competitive.

If you missed the research proposal deadline for a PG research scholarship round, you can usually resubmit for the next round in the same admission cycle, but the delay pushes your intake back. Talk to the relevant faculty’s graduate research coordinator directly rather than assuming you’re locked out for the year.
