OIST Internship 2026: Eligibility, Stipend, Deadline and How to Apply

The OIST internship is a short-term research placement offered by the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate School, a research university on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa. It is formally called the OIST Research Internship Program, and it lets undergraduate and master’s students work inside an active OIST lab for 4 to 6 months, under the direct supervision of a faculty member.

Unlike a typical corporate internship, this is a hands-on research placement. You are not shadowing anyone. You are contributing to ongoing experiments in fields such as physics, neuroscience, marine biology, mathematics, or computational science, alongside PhD students and postdocs from more than 70 countries.

OIST runs the research internship twice a year. The Fall 2026 round has already closed. The Spring 2027 round is currently open, and this is the round most Indian students planning ahead should target.

OIST describes this schedule as tentative and subject to change, so always cross-check the live dates on the official OIST admissions page before you submit.

Counselor insight: Do not wait until the last week of September to start your application. You need at least one recommendation letter uploaded to the portal before you can even submit, and professors in India often take two to three weeks to respond to such requests during the semester.

The OIST internship eligibility criteria are broader than most funded research programs, which is part of why Indian students find it approachable.

• You are in the last two years of a bachelor's degree at any Indian or overseas university, college, or vocational school.
• You are enrolled in any year of a master's degree program.
• You have already graduated with a bachelor's or master's degree.
• Current or graduated PhD students are not eligible for this program.
• If currently enrolled, you need approval from your home institution to take up the internship.
• Your academic background should reasonably match the research unit you are applying to.

There is no nationality restriction, and no minimum CGPA is published by OIST, though a strong academic record and relevant coursework significantly improve your chances given how competitive selection is.

English proficiency scores such as IELTS or TOEFL are optional for the OIST internship, not mandatory. If you already have a strong score, uploading it can strengthen your file, but its absence will not disqualify you.

Counselor insight: Students often assume "STEM background" means only core sciences. OIST also offers units in computational neuroscience, quantum information, and environmental data science, so students with engineering or applied mathematics backgrounds are also competitive if their research fit is genuine.

The OIST internship is fully funded. Selected interns receive the following support, and none of it extends to dependents or family members.

Counselor insight: The daily allowance is meant to cover food and personal expenses, not to be treated as a salary. Students who budget for Okinawa's noticeably lower cost of living tend to find it comfortable rather than tight.

OIST charges a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 3,000 (JPY 5,000) for the Research Internship Program. There are no fee waivers for personal financial hardship, though students facing payment issues due to international sanctions on their country can contact OIST admissions directly.

You will need the following documents, all in English and uploaded as PDFs:

• Current academic transcript, plus your diploma if you have already graduated. If you have not graduated, a certificate of enrollment with an expected graduation date works instead.
• A Statement of Purpose, capped at 250 words or 1,500 characters, explaining what you hope to accomplish at OIST and how it fits your career plans.
• A current CV covering your academic background, research experience, and skills.
• You must submit between one and three recommendation letters in English from professorial-level faculty. Letters from postdocs or lab members are not accepted.
• Passport details and a scanned copy of your passport photo page, or another government ID if you do not yet hold a passport.
• A recent ID photo, taken within the last three months.
• An English proficiency score, if you choose to submit one. It is optional.

Counselor insight: You cannot submit your application until at least one recommendation letter has already reached OIST's system. Send your request to professors the same week you start drafting your SOP, not after you finish it.

1. Create an account on the OIST graduate school application portal.
2. Shortlist a research unit and faculty member whose work matches your interests, using OIST's faculty and project availability list.
3. Request recommendation letters early, since your application cannot be submitted without at least one.
4. Prepare and upload your transcript, diploma or enrollment certificate, SOP, CV, passport details, and ID photo.
5. Pay the application fee and submit before 15th October 2026, 23:59 JST, for the Spring 2027 round.
6. Wait for the result, expected around mid-December 2026 for this round. OIST notifies applicants through the application platform.
7. If selected, complete the Certificate of Eligibility and visa formalities with OIST's administrative support.

A quick note on rules: applicants must not contact OIST faculty directly before applying. All communication must go through the official online system.

OIST hosts more than 100 interdisciplinary research units, so the OIST internship spans a wide range of STEM fields, including the following:

• Mathematical and computational sciences
• Marine, environmental and ecological science

Projects are not pre-assigned. Once you are accepted, you and your supervising faculty jointly define the exact scope of your research based on your interests and background.
