Top LLM in Germany Specializations for Indian Students
| Specialization | Key Focus | Top Universities | Eligibility |
| International Business and Corporate Law | M&A, cross-border transactions, global corporate governance | LMU Munich, University of Cologne, Bucerius Law School | 60%โ70% in LLB; IELTS 6.5โ7.0 |
| Intellectual Property and IT Law | Patent, trademark, AI, and cybersecurity law | University of Gรถttingen (MIPLC), Humboldt Berlin | LLB + 1 year work experience; IELTS 6.5 |
| International Dispute Resolution | Negotiation, mediation, arbitration | Humboldt Berlin, Heidelberg University | 1 year work experience; IELTS 5.5โ6.5 |
| Tax Law | German and international tax systems | University of Hamburg, Heidelberg University | Strong core law background; IELTS 6.5+ |
| European Law and Governance | EU institutions, policy-making, EU single market | Humboldt Berlin, University of Freiburg, University of Bonn | LLB or related degree |
| Human Rights and Environmental Law | International human rights, climate law | University of Gรถttingen, Free University Berlin | LLB; IELTS 6.5+ |
Counselor insight: Indian students with a BTech plus LLB background have a direct advantage at Munich's MIPLC for IP and IT Law. The program actively searches for candidates with technical undergraduate degrees, something most NLU applicants lack. If this is your profile, please mention it explicitly in your SOP.
Eligibility, ECTS Equivalence & Language Requirements
Academic eligibility: LLB or five-year integrated LLB, minimum 60%โ70% (CGPA 6.5โ7.0). Humboldt and Hamburg typically admit applicants with 70%+ and 1โ2 years of work experience. Work experience is mandatory for dispute resolution and tax law tracks, optional but valuable elsewhere.
Is your Indian LLB eligible? German universities evaluate degrees in ECTS credits, not percentages:
- 5-year integrated LLB (BA LLB, BBA LLB): โ300 ECTS strongly preferred and widely accepted, including at Humboldt and LMU.
- 3-year LLB (after a separate bachelor's): โ240 ECTS generally accepted; work experience helps if the program prefers 300 ECTS.
- Most programs need a minimum of 240 ECTS. German admissions officers may not always be familiar with the Indian 5-year integrated format. State your ECTS equivalence explicitly in your SOP rather than assuming they'll work it out.
APS Certificate: Mandatory for all Indian students since November 2022. Without it, both your application and visa are rejected. Processing takes 6โ8 weeks.
Language: Most programs recommended here (Gรถttingen's GOMIL, Humboldt's IP/IT Law, and Heidelberg's International Law) are fully English-taught; no German is required to complete the degree.
| Test | Minimum Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS | 6.5โ7.0 | 6.5 at Heidelberg/Gรถttingen; 7.0 preferred at Humboldt/LMU |
| TOEFL iBT | 90โ100 | 90 accepted at most public universities |
| Duolingo | 110โ120 | Accepted at select programs |
German-taught programs need B2โC1 (TestDaF 4x4 or DSH-2) plus prior knowledge of the German civil law system, rarely a realistic path for Indian LLB holders. Stick to English-taught programs.

Health insurance and rent line items are cross-checked averages from multiple 2026 study-abroad guides, since DAAD doesn't itemize by category; treat them as planning ranges and confirm current rates with your insurer (TK, AOK) before budgeting.
City-wise: Gรถttingen and Heidelberg are cheapest (Rs.80,500โRs.1.13L/month). Munich is priciest (Rs.1.30LโRs.1.62L/month) but has the strongest corporate law placement network.

LLM in Germany for Indian Lawyers: BCI Recognition
The Bar Council of India does not recognize foreign law degrees for fresh advocate enrollment; a German LLM alone doesn't let you appear in Indian courts. If you're already BCI-enrolled, that stays intact; the LLM is a specialization on top of it.
| Your Situation | What the LLM Gives You | What It Doesn't |
|---|---|---|
| Practicing advocate, BCI-enrolled | Specialisation credential; EU career pathway | Right to practise German law or appear in German courts |
| Fresh LLB graduate, not yet enrolled | Strong international credential | Automatic BCI enrolment or Indian court rights |
| Planning to return to India | Stronger profile for corporate/IP/arbitration roles at MNCs | Bar rights in Germany or the EU |
Roles it opens in India: in-house counsel at German MNCs (Bosch, Volkswagen, SAP, BASF, and Siemens); international arbitration at MCIA (Mumbai) or DIAC (Delhi); IP litigation firms; and academic roles at NLUs in European/international law.
Counselor insight: Students who treat the German LLM as a bridge into international firms, not a license to practice German law, see the best outcomes. Freshfields, Hengeler Mueller, and Clifford Chance Frankfurt hire LLM holders for international advisory work with no German bar requirement.
Career Scope, Salary and the EU Blue Card

Post-Study Work Visa
After your LLM, you get an 18-month job seeker visa; no prior job offer is needed. Once hired, your employer converts it to a standard work permit.
Counselor insight: Most Indian LLM graduates who land EU-based law firm roles do so through internships during the program, not post-graduation cold applications. If your LLM starts in October, apply for internships in September, as firms in Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin run formal intern recruitment in October and March.
For the full visa process, fees, and documentation, see our Germany Job Seeker Visa guide.
3 Takeaways on LLM in Germany For Indian Students
Three things every Indian student should take away before applying:
- Start your APS certificate at least 8 weeks before your application deadline. It is the single most common reason Indian students miss their intended intake for an LLM in Germany.
- Choose your university based on specialization, not just QS rank. Gรถttingen for public international law. LMU for corporate law. Heidelberg offers the lowest fees for a top-ranked program.
- Use the 18-month job seeker visa as part of your plan, not an afterthought. Students who line up internships during the program and stay active in the German job market during those 18 months have significantly better outcomes than those who start only after graduation.

Frequently Asked Questions: LLM in Germany for Indian Students
-
Q1. How much does an LLM cost in Germany?
A) Public universities charge only a semester fee of Rs.7,780โRs.54,000 (โฌ72โโฌ500) per year, with no tuition. Private universities like Bucerius charge Rs.18.36LโRs.21.6L (โฌ17,000โโฌ20,000) annually. Monthly living costs add Rs.80,460โRs.1.43L depending on the city.
-
Q2. Is an Indian LLB valid in Germany, and can I practice law in India after a German LLM?
A) Yes, a 5-year integrated LLB (โ300 ECTS) is strongly preferred; a 3-year LLB (โ240 ECTS) is generally accepted. On return to India, your existing BCI enrollment stays intact; fresh graduates not yet enrolled must complete that separately. For corporate, in-house, and arbitration roles, the degree is fully valid regardless of BCI status.
-
Q3. What is the salary after LLM in Germany?
A) Corporate and IP law roles at top firms start at Rs.64.8LโRs.1.08Cr (โฌ60,000โโฌ100,000). Compliance/in-house roles at MNCs start at Rs.59.4LโRs.81L (โฌ55,000โโฌ68,000). EU institutions typically start at โฌ50,000โโฌ70,000.
-
Q4. What is the scope, and which specialization is most in demand?
A) Corporate law, tax law, and IP law (Munich's MIPLC, in demand at tech firms and the European Patent Office) lead employer demand. Top recruiters: Freshfields, Clifford Chance, Bosch, Siemens, and EU institutions in Brussels/Berlin. Post-graduation, the 18-month job seeker visa covers your search across Germany and the EU.
-
Q5. Is LLM in Germany taught in English?
A) Yes, for the programs recommended here (Gรถttingen's GOMIL, Humboldt's IP/IT Law, Heidelberg's International Law). Basic German (A2โB1) helps with daily life and part-time work.
-
Q6. What is the duration of an LLM program?
A) Most are one year (two semesters). Some, like MIPLC Munich, offer an optional research extension. Part-time options at a few private universities take two years.
-
Q7. Is an LLM in Germany better than the UK?
A) On cost, yes, Rs.0โRs.54,000 tuition versus Rs.25LโRs.35L at a UK Russell Group university. Post-Brexit, a UK LLM doesn't give automatic EU market access; a German LLM does, plus a faster PR pathway (21 months via Blue Card). BCI recognition is identical for both.
-
Q8. Is LLM easy or difficult?
A) An LLM in Germany has academically demanding coursework that covers complex legal frameworks across jurisdictions, and most assessments are research-heavy with detailed written submissions. That said, difficulty depends largely on your specialization and prior legal background. Students with a strong LLB foundation and some work experience typically find the transition manageable within the first semester.
-
Q9. What are the LLM in Germany requirements for Indian students?
A) LLM in Germany requirements for Indian students include an LLB degree with 60%โ70% marks; IELTS 6.5โ7.0 or TOEFL 90โ100 for English-taught programs; the mandatory APS certificate (fee: โน18,000); a blocked account of โฌ11,904 for the student visa; and 1โ2 years of work experience for most specializations. German-taught programs additionally require B2/C1 German proficiency (TestDaF 4x4 or DSH-2).
-
Q10. Is LLM in Germany good for Indian students?
A) Yes, world-class legal education at a fraction of UK/US cost, starting salaries of โฌ60,000โโฌ100,000 (Rs.64.8LโRs.1.08Cr), and a comparatively fast route to a legal career in the EU via the 18-month job seeker visa and 21-month Blue Card PR pathway.
