A masters in UX design in Germany is an 18-month postgraduate program in researching how people use digital products and fixing what is broken. German universities rarely print the words “UX design” on the certificate. Expect User Experience Design, Usability Engineering, Interaction Design, or User Experience Management and Design instead, depending on the university.

The entry requirements differ sharply by university type: engineering and computer science graduates fit the public university route; business, psychology, or design graduates fit the private route. • Final-year BTech (CSE/IT), graduating in 2027, with some UI/UX coursework or an internship: the public route (THI, Rhine-Waal) is realistic and tuition-free.
• Working UX/UI designer with a BBA, BA Psychology, or design diploma and 2-3 years' experience: the private route (PFH Göttingen, BSBI) fits better since public technical universities generally reject non-engineering backgrounds.
• Class 12 student or fresh graduate with no portfolio and no engineering/design degree: wait. Build a portfolio through a paid internship or short UX certification first.

Counselor insight: Most rejections at public universities happen because the bachelor's degree doesn't carry the 210-ECTS credit load or the exact subject match, not because the portfolio is weak. Portfolio quality is only evaluated after that filter clears.

QS Rankings 2027: none of these four appear in the QS World University Rankings. QS ranks large research universities; UX/design masters in Germany sit at Fachhochschulen and private schools, which QS doesn't cover as a category. Weigh faculty specialization and placement rate instead of a rank that doesn't exist here.

One flag on BSBI: its MA is awarded jointly with the UK's University for the Creative Arts (UCA). Confirm directly how that affects APS treatment and degree recognition before applying.

Counselor insight: A general Indian CS/IT degree without a dedicated interaction design module still qualifies for THI, provided you show programming ability and design work from internships or self-taught projects. THI checks for the combination, not the degree title.

Tuition is only part of your visa file. German consulates check proof of funds through a blocked account (Sperrkonto), which drives your real budget.

Does dMAT apply to you? This rule only applies if you're applying for Summer 2027 or later and your bachelor's degree is in one of the fields listed above. THI/Rhine-Waal applicants with an Engineering or CS bachelor's are affected; a bachelor's specifically in Interaction Design may not be, but confirm with APS India since the field list is new. PFH applicants with an Economics or Business Informatics bachelor's are affected; Psychology and Business Psychology are not currently on the list. BSBI applicants with a Commerce, Business, or Management bachelor's are affected.

Application sequence: shortlist and start your portfolio 10 months out → APS registration and dMAT (if applicable) 6-8 months out → IELTS/TOEFL and transcripts 6 months out → APS submission 5-6 months out, filed early since April-July is peak season → SOP, LORs, and university application 4 months out → blocked account and visa appointment once admitted.

Public-university tuition is already low, so scholarship value here is mostly living-cost support, not tuition waivers.

• DAAD Study Scholarships for Fine Arts, Design, Visual Communication and Film: the closest DAAD category to a design masters; eligible program lists update every cycle, so check against your target university.
• DAAD general Study Scholarships: open across disciplines, typically 2 years' work experience expected outside EPOS categories.
• University merit scholarships: PFH and BSBI both offer partial (10-20%) tuition scholarships; not fully funded, so don't let them replace your blocked-account plan.

• IELTS/TOEFL score falls short: English-taught bachelor's substitutes at THI/Rhine-Waal; PFH/BSBI sometimes allow a first-semester bridging course.
• Visa appointment lands after semester start: Some universities (PFH included) allow late enrollment at 80% attendance, but get the confirmation in writing before you travel.
• Portfolio flagged as shallow at the aptitude interview: rebuild 2-3 case studies around process and iteration, not final screens, and ask for a reassessment window.
