Updated on Jul 02, 2024, 11:57

The IELTS Listening section is designed to assess your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts. This part of the test lasts approximately 30 minutes, during which you will listen to four recordings and answer questions based on what you hear. These recordings feature different accents and cover a range of topics, reflecting real-life scenarios you might encounter in English-speaking environments.

In the IELTS Listening section, you will hear conversations between individuals, as well as monologues on academic or everyday topics. Each recording is played only once, so listening carefully and making notes, if necessary, is crucial. The test is divided into four sections, each becoming progressively more challenging.

Key Highlights of the Listening Section:

  • The test consists of four recordings, each with ten related questions.
  • The complexity of the recordings and questions increases with each section.
  • You will hear a mix of everyday conversations and academic talks.
  • Each recording is played only once, necessitating focused listening.
  • The recordings include a range of English accents to reflect real-world diversity.
  • Be prepared for multiple-choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, and short-answer questions.

Type of questions: Note Completion

A note completion question in the IELTS Listening section requires you to fill in missing information in a set of notes based on details you hear in the recording.

How to best answer:

  • Before the recording begins, quickly scan through the notes to understand the overall topic and the type of information required. Pay attention to headings and subheadings for context.
  • Look at the gaps in the notes and predict what type of information (e.g., nouns, verbs, adjectives, numbers) might fill each one. This helps you focus your listening on specific details.
  • As the recording plays, listen carefully for keywords or phrases that correspond to the surrounding text in the notes. These will help you locate the correct answers.
  • Information in the recording usually follows the same order as the notes. Stay on track with the recording and fill in the gaps sequentially.
  • Ensure your answers fit within the context of the notes. Use brief, accurate phrases or single words as required, and ensure they grammatically fit into the notes.
  • After the recording, check your answers for correct spelling and make sure they make sense within the context of the notes. Ensure that you haven’t missed any gaps.
