What Are the University of Oslo Fees for Indian Students?
University of Oslo fees for Indian students have four parts: tuition, compulsory semester charges, the living-expense funds you must show for your study permit, and your rent. Our estimate for a first year: if a master's year is 60 credits, tuition works out to NOK 204,000 to 295,020 (Rs.20,42,040 to Rs.29,53,150). Adding NOK 1,940 in semester charges and the NOK 170,368 living-expense amount gives roughly Rs.37,66,843 to Rs.46,77,953 for the first year. This is our calculation from UiO's per-course rates, not a UiO annual price, and it excludes flights, insurance and one-time setup costs.
Is the University of Oslo Free for Indian Students?
No. Many websites still say UiO is free, but those pages predate the tuition fees. UiO's own page says the fees do not affect students admitted before 2023, which means anyone admitted from 2023 onward, including Indian students applying now, is covered.
Policy is moving, though. The government proposed in 2025 to give universities flexibility over fees for students from outside the EU/EEA, and a June 2026 report describes a legislative change allowing public universities to offer tuition-free study. Counselor insight: Families sometimes pick UiO because a blog said it was free, and discover the tuition invoice after the offer. Budget for tuition as if it applies, and treat any waiver as a bonus you confirm in writing with UiO.
University of Oslo Fees by Level and Program
UiO sets fees per 10-credit course. For 2026/27, a bachelor's course costs NOK 24,670 to 30,330 (Rs.2,46,947 to Rs.3,03,603) per 10 credits, and a master's course costs NOK 34,000 to 49,170 (Rs.3,40,340 to Rs.4,92,192) per 10 credits, according to UiO's table of costs. The same page says the 2026/27 and 2027/28 program rates apply.
Three points change the numbers:
- Rates depend on the subject area, so the range reflects different fields.
- Programs of 1.5 years may charge a different amount per year than the stated sum.
- Joint degrees and European joint degrees set their own tuition, so check the program page.

University of Oslo Semester Fee and Other Charges
Every active student pays a set of semester charges in addition to tuition. According to UiO's semester fee page, these are:

If you skip the SAIH contribution, subtract NOK 60 from the invoice. Paying the semester fee gives you access to SiO's welfare services, including health services.
Counselor insight: Some older blogs quote a semester fee of NOK 500 or so. These charges change, so use the amount on UiO's page in the term you enrol. Over a two-year master's with four semesters, they add up to about NOK 3,880 (Rs.38,839).
How and When to Pay University of Oslo Fees
You do not need to show tuition money when you apply. UiO says documentation of tuition funds is not required at application, but the fee must be paid shortly after an offer.
After an offer, UiO sends an invoice by email. The rules:
- The deadline is two weeks after the invoice is issued.
- Registering a payment can take up to three weeks, depending on the bank connection.
- Tuition must be paid in full before each academic year, and instalments are not possible.
- Second-year students may pay per semester.
- UiO issues a confirmation of payment once it registers the money.
Counselor insight: The two-week window is short when an education loan is still awaiting sanction. Start the loan process before results are out, not after the invoice arrives.
Living Costs on Top of University of Oslo Fees
University of Oslo fees are only part of the cost. When you apply for a student residence permit, you must document that you can cover living expenses, and this comes in addition to tuition. Housing is the biggest monthly cost. UiO says SiO rent is between NOK 4,000 and 8,000 a month, or Rs.40,040 to Rs.80,080. Master's students can apply for an unfurnished single room and should not expect a furnished one. The application deadline is 1 June for the autumn semester. Scholarships and Ways to Lower Your Costs
UiO does not offer any scholarships that cover tuition fees and says it is legally barred from using its grant for student scholarships. The government has said it will reassess national scholarships for later academic years, so watch for updates before you accept an offer.

If your family can fund the whole year from savings, your first-year need is roughly Rs.37 to 47 lakh on our estimate. Keep the tuition ready within two weeks of the invoice, and start moving funds in March.
If you rely on an education loan, the tuition invoice comes with a two-week deadline, and the funds proof for your permit is a separate requirement. Speak to your lender before offers arrive, and confirm the sanction can be disbursed to UiO in that window.
If your budget is under Rs.25 lakh for the first year, the tuition range alone (Rs.20 to 30 lakh on our estimate) may exceed it. Shortlist lower-cost universities now, before you spend on tests.

What to Do If Your Plans Change
You miss the invoice deadline. Contact UiO's international advisers at int-advisor@admin.uio.no straight away. Do not assume the deadline will extend.
You decide not to go. UiO allows refund applications for withdrawal by 1 September for the autumn semester and 1 February for the spring semester.
Your visa is refused after you have paid. UiO's stated rule covers withdrawal from the study place. Ask UiO in writing whether your case qualifies, and send your refusal letter.
The rupee falls against the krone. Tuition is set in NOK, so a weaker rupee raises your cost. Keep a buffer of 5 to 10% in your plan.
Fees change after your offer. The precise tuition fee is confirmed alongside the offer. Keep that document as your reference.
