What Is the University of Oslo Acceptance Rate?

The University of Oslo acceptance rate for master’s programs was close to 50% in the 2025 admission round, not the 5% that many education websites quote. According to UiO’s own admission report, the university received 10,755 master’s applications, sent 5,363 offers and had 3,298 offers accepted. The 2024 round was almost identical in shape.

Offer rate and acceptance rate are not the same thing

When people search for the University of oslo acceptance rate, they usually mean "what share of applicants get an offer". That is the "offers as % of applicants" row: roughly one in two. The "accepted" row is lower because students hold multiple offers, fail to get a visa, or choose another university.

Where the 5% figure comes from

Yocket and Leverage Edu state 5%, and Shiksha gives 5% to 10%. We could not trace any of these figures to a UiO publication, and none links to one. Treat them as unverified.

Counselor insight: Students who see "5%" often drop UiO or apply as a long shot without preparing. A near-50% offer rate does not mean UiO is easy. Your grade average and program choice decide where you land.

Is the University of Oslo Acceptance Rate Lower for Indian Students?

UiO does not publish an India-specific rate, so nobody can honestly quote one. What UiO does publish is a split by region. In 2025, 1,024 offers went to applicants from outside the Nordic countries, nearly 20% of all offers, up from 891 in 2024. UiO also says it still has fewer applicants from outside Europe than before tuition fees were introduced.

This shows non-Nordic applicants are being admitted in real numbers, and fewer applicants from outside Europe means volume is not pushing the rate down as it would at many UK or US universities.

University of Oslo Acceptance Rate by Program

The overall University of Oslo acceptance rate hides big differences between programs. UiO says most of its master's programs have far more qualified applicants than places, and it publishes "required points" (poenggrenser) each year. A required-points value of 0.00 means every qualified applicant was admitted. Higher values show a program where qualified applicants were turned away. Points are calculated on Norwegian letter grades, and for foreign degrees, UiO says it does not use conversion tables. Some programs also add ranking points from motivation letters, CV or work experience, which are folded into the required points.

Programs with extra tests are tighter still. The Economics master's admission page requires a GRE Quantitative score of at least 152 or a GMAT Focus score of at least 565.

If your target program looks too competitive, the top universities in Norway give you comparable backup options.

Grades and English Scores Indian Applicants Need for University of Oslo

Grades come first when you estimate your own University of Oslo acceptance rate. On the program page for Assessment and Evaluation, UiO asks for a specialisation of at least 80 ECTS credits and a grade average comparable to a Norwegian C, which it describes as roughly an American B or a British Second Class Upper. It states that all foreign education is evaluated individually. Requirements differ by program, so use this as a reference point, not a universal rule. English scores depend on the program. UiO's master's English page sets two levels:

UiO does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake or TOEFL MyBest scores.

UiO has only one English-taught bachelor's program, so this guide focuses on master's admission.

Counselor insight: Students often book IELTS after seeing the offer window, and then discover their writing band is 6.0. Every band must meet the minimum, so a 7.0 overall with a 6.0 in one band still fails. Book your first attempt in September and keep a retake slot before 1 December.

What to Do If Your UiO Application Goes Wrong

You miss the 1 December deadline. UiO admits once a year for master's programs, so a missed date means waiting a full cycle. Check the program page for any separate late round, then treat next year as your realistic plan.

Your English score falls short. Retake before the deadline, because every band must meet the minimum. Do not submit a score that is below the requirement and hope it is overlooked.

Your degree certificate is delayed. Upload what you have before 1 December and check the program page for how UiO handles pending documents. Ask your registrar for an interim letter.

You are rejected. Check the required points for your program, then consider a less competitive program next year or a backup university now.

You get an offer but cannot show the funds. The permit needs proof of Rs.17,05,384 (NOK 170,368) for 2026/27. Speak to your bank early about the documentation UDI needs.
