This scenario is unusual but happens in finance and law. Confirm your visa position with your university's international student office before signing any internship contract.

Internship in London for Indian students: Spring weeks are structured as pre-interviews for summer analyst roles the following year. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, and Clifford Chance all run them in London. Applications open September and close by November for first-year students.

Unpaid internships in UK are only legal when the placement is a compulsory part of a UK degree under one year or when you are purely shadowing someone with no assigned tasks. If you are doing real work, you are entitled to pay.

What London actually costs: A single room in a shared house in Zone 2-3 runs Rs.70,400-Rs.1,08,800 (£550-£850) per month. Food costs roughly Rs.25,600 (£200) per month. The weekly Oyster card cap for Zone 1-3 is £52.50 (Rs.6,720). Total monthly cost in London: Rs.1.4 lakh-Rs.1.6 lakh. In Birmingham, Manchester, or Leeds, rent drops to Rs.40,000-Rs.64,000 (£313-£500) per month, making mid-size cities viable on a marketing or NHS stipend.

Counselor insight: Finance and consulting internships in UK run like compressed graduate programs. You are assessed from week one, and return offers go to students who ask specific questions about permanent roles from week three onward, not at the end. Treating it as exploratory work experience is the most common reason Indian students do not convert their internship to a full-time offer.

Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta all hire international students for software engineering, data science, AI/ML, and product management roles. If you are in an MSc computer science, data science, or AI program, start applying in October. For UK data science internships, you can expect three stages: an online assessment, a technical phone screen, and an assessment day. A strong GitHub profile and Python or R proficiency are baseline requirements.

HSBC, Barclays, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and the Big Four all run structured summer analyst programs. A competitive profile for Goldman or JPMorgan includes a 2:1 or above from a Russell Group university, quantitative coursework, and strong performance in the HireVue competency interview. A prior finance internship strengthens your application but is not a requirement. Goldman's spring week exists precisely to give first-year students with no prior finance experience a structured entry point. Applications open in September and close by November. The HireVue competency interview arrives within 24 hours of applying at most banks, so prepare responses before submitting.

Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Siemens, and National Grid offer placement years and summer roles for mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering students. Paid internship in UK for Indian students run Rs.1.9 lakh to Rs.3.2 lakh (£1,500-£2,500) per month, with strong conversion to graduate roles.

For Indian students who completed MBBS in India and are now in a UK postgraduate program, clinical exposure is tied to your university's NHS trust partnerships. Direct NHS internships are course-linked rather than separately applied for. For health policy and NHS management roles, the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme accepts international students on a Graduate Route Visa.

A UK CV is two pages maximum. Your CV should not include a photograph, date of birth, or marital status. It opens with a 2-3 line professional profile, followed by work experience in reverse chronological order, and then education and skills. If you submit an Indian-format resume with a photograph, hiring managers will notice even if the ATS does not. For Indian students specifically: your university's Indian Students Society alumni network regularly shares referral opportunities that are not publicly listed. This is practical, not just social.

One page, three paragraphs. Paragraph 1: why this specific role at this specific company matters to you. Paragraph 2: one or two concrete pieces of experience that show you can do the work. Paragraph 3: what you bring and a direct closing line.

Counselor insight: Indian students often open cover letters by describing a BTech project or an internship at an Indian firm without translating the experience into terms a UK hiring manager recognizes. A Goldman Sachs or Deloitte reader does not know what "worked on a live derivatives project at ICICI Securities" means unless you contextualize it: "structured and priced equity derivatives for institutional clients in a team of six, using Bloomberg terminal." The same applies to consulting: "worked on a cost-reduction project for a Mumbai manufacturing client" reads better as "identified Rs.2.4 crore in operational savings across a 3-month engagement for a mid-size FMCG client." Translate the experience into output and context, not just the job title.

International students on a Student Visa do not require employer sponsorship during study, provided they work within permitted hours. Confirm directly with each employer's HR before applying.

Note: UK Civil Service and Fast Stream internships have additional nationality and security vetting requirements. Indian students should verify eligibility on the Civil Service Careers website before applying.

Missed the October-November finance and consulting window: Do not apply to the same firms for summer; those cohorts are closed. Apply instead to boutique investment banks and mid-size consulting firms, which recruit year-round. You can recover from one missed season by building your CV over the following months.

Rejected from all technology applications: The most common cause is a low score on the online coding assessment. Structured preparation using LeetCode (data structures, The gap you need to fill is in algorithms. Apply to funded UK startups in the interim; most have no formal process and respond to direct LinkedIn outreach.

Visa expired before your internship start date: Contact your university's international student office immediately. Working on an expired visa, even for one day, breaches your visa conditions and affects future applications, including the Graduate Route. Request a deferred start date from your employer in writing.

Internship is described as paid, but the first payslip is zero or below minimum wage: Raise a complaint with HMRC. Enforcement is against the employer, not the intern. It will not affect your visa.

Counselor insight: The most common visa gap Indian students miss is a degree that finishes in June, Student Visa expires in July, Graduate Route not yet been applied for, and a "volunteer" internship that starts in the gap. Apply for the Graduate Route before your Student Visa expires. There is no safe gap period.

1. Apply in September, not January. Finance, consulting, and law internships in UK close by November. Arriving in the UK and treating your first term as a settling-in period means you miss the primary application window entirely.
2. Fix your CV format before your first application. A UK CV has no photograph and no date of birth. The cover letter is assessed seriously. One formatting error does not disqualify you, but it signals to hiring managers that you have not researched the UK application process.
3. Get your National Insurance Number in your first week. You cannot legally receive a salary without it. Apply immediately on arrival at GOV.UK. Also confirm with your employer that a right-to-work check has been completed and that your internship hours are within your visa conditions before you sign anything.
