What is the Average Salary in USA, and which number should you use?

The average salary in USA is Rs.66.13 lakh (69,770)a year as a mean across all occupations, and the median is Rs.48.32lakh(50,980). Both figures come from the BLS wage survey for May 2025, released on May 15, 2026, and the BLS occupation finder lists the same median for all workers.

Use the median for a typical worker. The mean sits higher because surgeons, cardiologists and other top earners pull it up, so the average salary in USA looks better than most people’s pay. BLS also counts base pay, commissions and tips but leaves out overtime and non-production bonuses, so your offer letter can differ from a BLS figure.

You will begin your MS in the 2027-28 academic year and graduate in 2029, so every wage here is a May 2025 baseline, the latest BLS has published. Use it to compare roles and states, not to predict one exact offer. The rest of this guide narrows the national number to what matters for you: your occupation, your state and your take-home in rupees.

Exchange rate used: Rs.94.78 per USD. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.

Counselor insight: Families often quote the all-occupation mean because it is the first number Google shows. It is the wrong benchmark for an MS plan. Pick your target occupation first, then read its row in the next table.

Average Salary in USA for Indian MS Graduates, by Occupation

BLS does not publish pay for MS graduates as a group, so the cleanest official answer is pay by occupation. The table covers roles that Indian MS students in computing, engineering and finance often target, using the BLS national estimates for May 2025. These figures cover all experience levels. Treat the 25th percentile, the pay level that a quarter of workers in the role earn or below, as a cautious guide to junior pay, not a fresher guarantee.

Occupation25th percentileMedianMean
Software developersRs.99.72 lakh ($105,210)Rs.1.29 crore ($135,980)Rs.1.40 crore ($148,100)

Information security analystsRs.92.70 lakh ($97,810)Rs.1.22 crore ($129,180)Rs.1.26 crore ($132,510)
Data scientistsRs.81.19 lakh ($85,660)Rs.1.14 crore ($120,230)Rs.1.20 crore ($126,800)
Electrical engineersRs.87.98 lakh ($92,830)Rs.1.14 crore ($120,630)Rs.1.19 crore ($125,100)
Financial and investment analystsRs.75.15 lakh ($79,290)Rs.97.38 lakh ($102,740)Rs.1.11 crore ($116,800)
Computer systems analystsRs.78.53 lakh ($82,860)Rs.1.00 crore ($105,850)Rs.1.09 crore ($114,610)
Mechanical engineersRs.79.74 lakh ($84,130)Rs.98.68 lakh ($104,110)Rs.1.08 crore ($113,610)
Industrial engineersRs.79.24 lakh ($83,600)Rs.97.09 lakh ($102,440)Rs.1.04 crore ($109,900)

Software developers show a wide spread, from Rs.99.72 lakh at the 25th percentile to Rs.1.40 crore at the mean. For a closer look at one role, read our answer on what a machine learning engineer can earn after an MS in the USA, and see which companies hire MS graduates. Those pages quote their own salary figures, so read them as role-level context. Every number in this guide comes from BLS.

Exchange rate used: Rs.94.78 per USD. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.

Counselor insight: Do not size an education loan around the mean. Use the 25th percentile of your target role as the floor and the median as the realistic middle, then check that your monthly take-home from the next section still covers your EMI.

Average Salary in USA After tax: what you take home in INR

Gross pay is not what reaches your account. This estimate takes a software developer earning the BLS mean in each state and applies federal tax for a single filer at 2026 rates: a $16,100 standard deduction and brackets from 10% to 37%, per the IRS. Nonresident aliens usually cannot take the standard deduction, but students from India can claim it under Article 21(2) of the US-India tax treaty, as the IRS guidance for nonresident aliens explains. IRS Publication 519 covers the wider rules.

State tax uses the 2026 rates compiled by the Tax Foundation: no tax on wages in Texas, Washington and Florida, a flat 4.95% in Illinois, 4.25% in Michigan and 5% in Massachusetts below its high-income surtax. The flat rate is applied to gross pay, so real state tax can come out slightly lower.

Social Security and Medicare add 7.65% to your share. F-1 students who are nonresident aliens are generally exempt from both while they remain nonresident, which covers your first five calendar years in the US. If you arrive in 2027, your fifth calendar year is 2031, so your first year of OPT usually sits inside that window while later STEM OPT months may not. The table therefore shows both cases.

StateGross at BLS mean (software developers)Federal + state taxMonthly take-home, Social Security and Medicare exemptMonthly take-home, if those taxes apply
TexasRs.1.29 crore ($136,450)15.7%Rs.9.08 lakhRs.8.26 lakh
WashingtonRs.1.62 crore ($171,040)17.4%Rs.11.16 lakhRs.10.12 lakh
FloridaRs.1.30 crore ($137,010)15.8%Rs.9.11 lakhRs.8.29 lakh
IllinoisRs.1.29 crore ($136,540)20.7%Rs.8.55 lakhRs.7.73 lakh
MichiganRs.1.16 crore ($122,720)19.1%Rs.7.84 lakhRs.7.10 lakh
MassachusettsRs.1.53 crore ($161,730)22.0%Rs.9.96 lakhRs.8.98 lakh

Texas and Illinois pay software developers almost the same gross, yet Illinois takes about Rs.6.41 lakh ($6,759) more in state tax each year. Washington's higher gross and zero wage tax give the best take-home in this set. California, New York and New Jersey use graduated state tax, so a flat rate would mislead you. Run any offer from those states through the state's own calculator.

These are planning estimates, not tax advice. They leave out health insurance, retirement contributions, local taxes and rent.

Counselor insight: Compare offers on monthly take-home minus rent, not on gross pay. Always ask which work location the salary applies to, because the same title can pay differently across cities.

Average Salary in USA by State

The table ranks every state and DC by the BLS all-occupation mean wage for May 2025, using the BLS state estimates. Software developers sit beside it because most Indian MS students in tech will read that column. Treat the all-occupation column as a cost and demand signal, not a salary promise.

Counselor insight: A high-paying state is not automatically the better choice. Compare take-home after state tax and your rent before you rank universities by location, and check your program's job market in that state.

How OPT, STEM OPT and H-1B wage levels change the average salary in USA you need

F-1 graduates can work for 12 months on post-completion OPT. Graduates with a qualifying STEM degree who join an E-Verify employer can add a 24-month extension, for 36 months in total, as university offices such as the University of Florida explain. Check your program against the DHS STEM list before you accept an admit.

H-1B is the next step. A final DHS rule replaced the pure lottery with weighted selection from the FY 2027 cap season, effective February 27, 2026. Registrations get entries by wage level: four for Level IV, three for Level III, two for Level II and one for Level I. Levels are set for the occupation and work location, so the same salary can land at different levels in different cities. DHS states that the rule has no impact on OPT, and employers must still pay at least the prevailing or actual wage.

For you, salary becomes a visa variable. A stronger offer in your occupation raises take-home and can raise your selection odds. A STEM extension gives you more time for repeat attempts. None of this guarantees selection, so keep a backup plan.

Counselor insight: When you compare two offers, ask each recruiter which wage level they expect to register. A salary that looks modest in dollars can sit at a higher level in a cheaper city than a larger salary in an expensive one.

If the Average Salary in USA you expected does not arrive: what to do

  • You have no job as your OPT start date nears. Unemployment days count from the start date on your work permit, and you get at most 90 on post-completion OPT. Work of at least 20 hours a week counts as employment, and unpaid internships are allowed during post-completion OPT, per Washington University's international office. Report every job in the SEVP portal.
  • You miss the OPT filing window. USCIS accepts applications from 90 days before program end to 60 days after. If you are near the end, contact your DSO the same day.
  • Your offer sits at a low wage level. Ask which H-1B wage level it matches. Level I carries the fewest entries, so a higher base salary can change your odds. If a raise is not possible, plan for STEM OPT and a second registration.
  • You are not selected in the H-1B lottery. A STEM extension gives you 36 months of OPT in total, which can cover further registrations. Speak to your DSO and a licensed immigration attorney about other routes before your work authorisation ends.
  • Your employer withholds Social Security and Medicare tax. If you are still inside your five-calendar-year window, ask payroll for a refund and share your W-2 and EAD.
  • Your take-home does not cover your loan. Divide your monthly take-home by your EMI before you accept, and weigh a lower-cost state.

Counselor insight: Open a conversation with your DSO the moment a plan changes. An early email costs nothing, while a missed unemployment day cannot be undone.

3 Takeaways on Average Salary in USA

  1. Use the BLS row for your occupation, with its 25th percentile as the floor and the median as the middle, instead of the national mean of Rs.66.13 lakh ($69,770).
  2. Compare every offer on monthly take-home after state tax, in rupees, before you compare gross pay.
  3. Choose roles and cities that support a higher H-1B wage level, and protect your OPT unemployment days.

Frequently Asked Questions About Average Salary in USA

  • What is the average salary in USA in rupees?

The average salary in USA is Rs.66.13 lakh (69,770)a year as a mean, and the median is Rs.48.32 lakh (50,980), per BLS data for May 2025. These cover all occupations and experience levels, so an MS graduate in software or engineering should read the occupation table above instead of this single national figure.

  • What if my job offer is below the average salary in USA for my role?

Compare the offer with the average salary in USA for your role, meaning the BLS 25th percentile and median for your occupation, then convert it to monthly take-home. An offer near the 25th percentile can still work if your state tax is low, but it may carry a lower H-1B wage level. Ask about the level, bonus and relocation support before accepting.

  • Do Indian students on OPT pay Social Security and Medicare tax?

Generally not during your first five calendar years in the US, because F-1 students are treated as nonresident aliens for this purpose, according to the IRS. If an employer withholds it in error, ask for a refund and keep your W-2 and work authorisation papers. The exemption ends once you become a resident alien for tax purposes.

  • How many days can I be unemployed on OPT?

Post-completion OPT allows 90 days of unemployment in total. If you receive the 24-month STEM extension, the combined limit becomes 150 days over the full 36 months. If you reach 90 days without a job, your SEVIS record can be terminated, so log employment promptly and speak to your DSO early.

  • How does the H-1B wage-weighted lottery affect the salary I need?

Since February 27, 2026, registrations receive more entries at higher wage levels, with Level IV getting four and Level I getting one. A higher wage level for your occupation and location improves your selection chances, though DHS says the rule does not change OPT. Ask recruiters which level they would register.

  • How does the average salary in USA differ for freshers and experienced workers?

BLS publishes the average salary in USA by occupation, not by years of experience, so every figure here blends junior and senior staff. Use the 25th percentile as a cautious guide to junior pay, the median as a realistic middle, and treat the mean as a ceiling that senior earners lift. Real offers vary by employer and city.

  • Which state has the highest average salary in USA?

Among states, Massachusetts has the highest all-occupation mean at Rs.81.14 lakh (85,610), followed by Washington at Rs.78.98 lakh (83,330). The District of Columbia is higher at Rs.1.05 crore (111,010), and Mississippi is the slowest at Rs.48.16 lakh (50,810). If you work in tech, read the software developer column, which ranks states differently.

  • Is the average salary in USA the same as an Indian MS graduate's salary?

It is not the same, because the national figure blends every job. BLS shows software developers at a mean of Rs.1.40 crore (148,100) and a 25th percentile of Rs.99.72 lakh (105,210). Those cover all experience levels, so juniors should expect pay nearer the lower end and should verify against real offers.

  • What is the average salary in USA per month after tax in rupees?

For a software developer earning the BLS mean in Texas, take-home is about Rs.9.08 lakh a month if you are exempt from Social Security and Medicare tax, and about Rs.8.26 lakh if those taxes apply. Illinois, with a 4.95% state tax, brings a comparable salary down to Rs.8.55 lakh and Rs.7.73 lakh.
