Quick Read
- ANU publishes no official acceptance rate; the 30-70% figures online are unverified.
- Your real benchmark: ANU Selection Rank (UG) or 7-point GPA scale (PG/PhD).
- IELTS 6.5 overall required, no band below 6.0, test-centre only.
- ANU ranks #29 globally and #4 in Australia, QS 2027 rankings.
Why ANU Doesn’t Publish an Acceptance Rate?
Search “ANU acceptance rate” and you’ll find a different number on nearly every page: 30%, 35%, even 70% for international students. None of these trace back to ANU itself. The Australian National University does not release a ratio of applications to offers, overall or by nationality, and no Australian government source publishes one either.
There’s a structural reason for this. US-style acceptance rates work because those universities set one GPA/SAT bar and admit a fixed share of a single applicant pool. ANU doesn’t work that way:

End-to-End Application Support
- No single cutoff. Admission runs on a program-by-program ANU Selection Rank (undergraduate) or a GPA threshold (postgraduate), so “getting into ANU” isn’t one event. It’s getting into one of hundreds of individual programs, each with its own bar.
- Rolling, not pooled, admissions. International applications are assessed as they arrive, not ranked against every other applicant in one annual cycle, so there’s no fixed “intake size” to divide applications by.
- No SAT/ACT/university-wide GPA floor for international students. ANU converts every qualification (Indian Class 12 boards, IB, A-Levels) onto its own 99.95 Selection Rank or 7-point GPA scale, so a like-for-like acceptance ratio across qualification types isn’t something ANU calculates either.
What ANU does publish is real application and offer volume. In its early-offer round for 2023 intake, ANU made 5,041 offers against 6,954 applications, up from 4,562 offers on 6,109 applications the year before. For 2024, it made 4,899 early offers and expected 7,000–8,000 offers in total across both the direct-application and UAC channels. These are actual ANU figures, but they describe one admissions round, not a university-wide acceptance rate. That is exactly why no single “ANU acceptance rate” percentage can be built from them.

For how Indian academic records convert onto ANU’s scales, LeapScholar’s counselors break this down further: see what our counselors say about converting your CGPA for study-abroad applications.
Counselor insight: when a student opens with “what’s ANU’s acceptance rate,” the useful next question is always which program, since that is the only number ANU actually publishes a bar for.
ANU Admission Requirements by Degree Level
Since there’s no single acceptance rate, this table is more useful than any percentage: it’s what ANU’s own admissions office actually checks.
| Level | Academic benchmark | English requirement | Who sets the bar |
| Undergraduate | ANU Selection Rank, calculated out of 99.95 from your Class 12 / IB / A-Level results | IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 (test-centre result only; Home Edition/online IELTS not accepted) | ANU’s own conversion table per qualification |
| Postgraduate coursework (incl. Masters) | Bachelor’s degree with GPA typically 5.0–5.5 out of 7.0, program-dependent | IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 | Each program’s admissions committee |
| PhD / Higher Degree Research | Bachelor’s with Honours or a research Master’s; GPA and research proposal reviewed by the department | IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 | Supervisor + college graduate research committee |
A few things worth knowing before you assume you’re short:
- Meeting the minimum never guarantees a seat. ANU states this explicitly: admission to most programs is competitive, so the published minimum is a floor, not a target.
- Your GPA is recalculated on ANU’s own scale. Whatever your Indian percentage or CGPA, ANU converts it to its 7-point GPA system. The raw percentage you’re used to doesn’t carry over directly, so get this converted and checked before you apply rather than estimating.
- Subject-specific boosts exist for UG. ANU adds “adjustment factors” to your Selection Rank for strong performance in nationally strategic subjects, but these stop applying once a program’s minimum Selection Rank hits 98 or above (common for flagship programs).

Counselor insight: this table, not any quoted acceptance rate, is what we actually walk students through during profile evaluation. CGPA conversion trips up more applicants here than low grades do: a 7.5/10 CGPA student who assumes they’re well above ANU’s floor sometimes isn’t, once converted correctly to the 7-point scale, so get it checked before you apply.
ANU Acceptance Rate for International Students
The claim that international students face a different, often higher, acceptance rate than domestic applicants isn’t something ANU confirms. What is true, and verifiable, is that ANU assesses domestic and international applicants against the same published academic standards for each program; the process differs (ANU converts your specific qualification to its Selection Rank/GPA scale), but the bar itself isn’t lowered for international applicants.
What does make ANU genuinely competitive for international students, regardless of any quoted percentage:
| Signal | What it tells you |
| QS World University Rankings 2027: #29 globally, #4 in Australia | ANU sits in the top 2% of institutions worldwide, among roughly 8,800 ranked universities |
| Group of Eight (Go8) member | ANU is one of Australia’s eight most research-intensive universities, grouped with Melbourne, Sydney and UNSW |
| International cohort | ANU enrols students from more than 100 countries, per ANU’s own reporting |
What this means practically: don’t anchor your application strategy to an unverifiable rate. Instead, build toward the Selection Rank or GPA your specific program publishes, and treat IELTS 6.5 as a floor, not a target: competitive applicants often clear it comfortably. If you’re unsure where you stand, LeapScholar’s counselors can walk you through the full application and visa process for Australia.
Is It Hard to Get Into ANU?
Yes, in the sense that it’s a Group of Eight, top-30-globally university with competitive, program-specific entry standards. But “hard” doesn’t mean a low acceptance rate, because ANU doesn’t publish one. It means:
- You need a strong Selection Rank or GPA for your specific program, not just ANU’s general minimum.
- Flagship programs set their own, higher bars. Law, International Relations, and some Sciences programs are consistently reported as ANU’s most competitive by applicant demand, even though ANU doesn’t publish per-program admit ratios.
- IELTS 6.5 is non-negotiable, and ANU is strict about accepted test formats: no IELTS Online or Home Edition.
- Documentation and deadlines matter as much as grades. A complete, on-time application with the right supporting documents avoids being screened out before your academic profile is even assessed.
For Indian students specifically, the honest framing is this: ANU is genuinely selective by reputation and standards, but the “30%” or “70%” numbers you’ll see elsewhere aren’t a reliable way to judge your own chances. Your Selection Rank or GPA against your specific program’s published minimum is.
ANU Acceptance Rate for Masters, Law, and PhD
Same answer as above: no single percentage exists at the program level either. What ANU does publish is entry requirements and indicative fees per program, which is a far more reliable planning tool.
ANU Acceptance Rate for Masters
Most ANU Master’s coursework programs require a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of roughly 5.0–5.5 out of 7.0 (program-dependent) plus IELTS 6.5. Indicative 2026 international tuition for coursework Masters runs broadly ₹30.6–37.3 lakh (AUD 46,000–56,000) a year, though this varies significantly by field. Always confirm the exact figure for your specific program on ANU’s official fee schedule before budgeting.
ANU Acceptance Rate for Law
ANU’s law programs (JD, Master of Laws) are among its most sought-after, and competition for places is widely reported as intense. Still, ANU does not publish a law-specific acceptance percentage. The Juris Doctor’s 2026 international indicative tuition runs toward the higher end of ANU’s fee bands. If you’re building a Law SOP for ANU, LeapScholar’s counselors have guidance on what to cover in your law school SOP for Australia.
Counselor insight: Law and International Relations are the two programs where Indian applicants most often underestimate demand; apply early and don’t treat the published minimum as a safe margin.
ANU Acceptance Rate for PhD
PhD (Higher Degree Research) admission doesn’t work on a Selection Rank at all. It depends on finding and being accepted by a supervisor, a strong research proposal, and your Honours or research Master’s result. ANU’s published 2025 indicative HDR tuition ranged from roughly ₹29.8–39.8 lakh (AUD 44,670–59,750) a year depending on college and discipline (domestic and many international PhD candidates are covered partly or fully by Research Training Program fee offsets; check your eligibility directly with ANU).

ANU Admission Scenarios for Indian Students
| Your profile | What it means for ANU |
| Class 12, 85%+, IELTS 7.0, applying for a Bachelor’s in Science or Engineering | Likely above the Selection Rank floor for most non-flagship programs, but check your specific program’s published rank. Law and International Relations set the bar meaningfully higher. |
| Bachelor’s degree, CGPA 7.5/10 (India), IELTS 6.5, applying for a Master’s coursework program | Convert your CGPA to ANU’s 7-point scale before assuming eligibility: a 7.5/10 doesn’t automatically map to a 5.5/7.0. Get this checked rather than estimating. |
| Master’s with research experience, applying for a PhD | Your academic record matters less than finding a supervisor whose research area matches yours and submitting a strong proposal. Start here before worrying about GPA cutoffs. |
If your profile doesn’t clearly fit one of these, that’s normal: program-specific requirements vary enough that a general rule often doesn’t apply cleanly to one applicant. LeapScholar’s counselors can assess your exact profile against Australian university requirements rather than leaving you to guess from an average.
Document Checklist for Your ANU Application
- Academic transcripts and certificates (Class 12 marksheet, or bachelor’s/master’s degree and transcripts, as applicable)
- Valid IELTS (or accepted equivalent) score report, from a test centre, not an online/Home Edition result
- Passport copy
- Statement of Purpose (program-dependent; not all ANU programs require one)
- Letters of recommendation (program-dependent, typically for postgraduate research applications)
- Research proposal and potential supervisor contact (PhD applicants only)
- Proof of funds / financial capacity (for the student visa stage, not the university application itself)
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) arrangement, confirmed once you accept your offer
Don’t assume every item applies to your program’s acceptance pathway: undergraduate applicants typically need far less documentation than postgraduate research applicants. A complete file matters more here than any acceptance rate guess. Confirm the exact list on your specific program’s page at study.anu.edu.au before you apply.
ANU Application Timeline for Indian Students
Because no acceptance rate exists to anchor your timeline against, plan by intake instead. ANU runs two main intakes (February/Semester 1 and July/Semester 2), plus an early-offer round for school leavers. International applicants can apply through two channels:
| Route | Who it’s for | How it works |
| Direct application | Most international undergraduate and postgraduate applicants | Apply directly via ANU’s international applications portal |
| Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) | Applicants completing an Australian Year 12 equivalent, IB, or NCEA Level 3 | Apply through UAC, which forwards your application to ANU |
For the 2024 intake, ANU received roughly two-thirds of its offers through direct application and the remainder through UAC, so for most Indian applicants (coming through international qualifications rather than UAC-eligible pathways), the direct route is the one to plan around.
As a general guide, international applicants should aim to apply 6–9 months ahead of their intended intake to leave time for document verification, IELTS retakes if needed, offer acceptance, CoE issuance, and student visa processing. If you’re weighing which intake avoids a gap year or fits your current academic calendar, LeapScholar’s counselors have guidance on comparing Australian intakes.

What If You Don’t Meet ANU’s Requirements?
An ineligibility notice from ANU isn’t the end of the road: it usually means one specific gap, not a wholesale rejection of your profile.
- Selection Rank or GPA just short: ANU College’s foundation studies program is a recognized pathway. Strong performance there (including a minimum “B” in Academic English) can lead to entry into your preferred ANU program, with indicative entry ranks published separately for the foundation pathway.
- IELTS below 6.5: Retake strategically rather than repeatedly: identify which band you’re weakest in first. ANU does not accept IELTS Online or Home Edition, so always book a test-centre sitting. Band distribution matters more than the overall score: students scoring 7.0 overall but 5.5 in Writing have been caught out by ANU’s “no band below 6.0” rule, so check every band, not just the average.
- Documentation incomplete: ANU will notify you of what’s missing before rejecting an application outright. Respond within the stated window rather than assuming the application has failed.
- Your profile doesn’t fit this specific program: Consider a related ANU program with a lower Selection Rank/GPA threshold, rather than only looking at other universities.
If you’re unsure whether a gap is fixable or means you should look elsewhere, get a free counselling assessment from LeapScholar before ruling ANU out.
