University of Mainz Fees 2026-27: What You Pay and What You Do Not

For most degree students, the University of Mainz fees consist of one recurring charge, the semester fee, because Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) charges tuition only to students aged 60 or over. For the winter semester 2026/27, the semester fee on the Mainz campus is โ‚ฌ366.90, about Rs.40,400. That is the number to plan around, not zero.

The semester fee does not go to the university. It funds the semester ticket and contributions for the Studierendenwerk (student services and cheaper room and board), the student body committee, University Sports courses and emergency aid. In the student body’s fee ordinance for winter 2026/27, โ‚ฌ229.90 of its โ‚ฌ252.90 share pays for the public transport pass.

Low fees do not mean a low-profile university: JGU is ranked #296th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.

Our guide to studying in Germany for free explains the wider tuition-free picture, and our cost of studying in Germany guide covers the national budget.

Counselor insight: Families who search "University of Mainz fees" often stop at "tuition-free" and miss that the semester fee recurs and moves. It was โ‚ฌ343.80 in winter 2025/26 and is โ‚ฌ366.90 now, so budget a small rise each year.

University of Mainz Fees by Campus: Mainz, Germersheim, and Trier

The semester fee depends on the campus, not the faculty. A chemistry student in Mainz pays the same as an economics student in Mainz.

CampusWinter 2026/27In INR
Mainzโ‚ฌ366.90Rs.40,400
Germersheimโ‚ฌ389.80Rs.42,900
Trier Medical Campusโ‚ฌ378.80Rs.41,700

Counselor insight: Ask the program office which campus your degree runs on before you build the budget. Germersheim costs about Rs.2,500 more per semester than Mainz, which is Rs.10,000 over a two-year master's.

Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz Tuition Fees for International Students

There is no separate tuition for international students. The 60-and-over rule applies to everyone, and the fee is โ‚ฌ700 per semester per degree program (Rs.77,000). The exceptions are fee-based master's and continuing-education programs.

JGU's recognition handout lists them: the Executive MBA, the Medienrecht LL.M., Medizinethik, Psychologische Psychotherapie, and the Lizentiat in Catholic Theology.

The two fee amounts we could confirm from JGU's own pages are for its MBA programs:

Some education portals show these programs as โ‚ฌ0 tuition. JGU's business school lists the fees above, so trust the program office over any third-party page.

Our MBA in Germany for Indian students guide compares these programs with other options.

Among the English-taught masters with no tuition, JGU's english programs include International Economics and Public Policy, where all courses are in English, and Physics and Meteorology. Check each degree page for language proof and fees before shortlisting.

If your program does charge tuition, the German Embassy asks for proof of funds equal to the first two semesters' tuition, shown as a payment confirmation, an education loan, or an unblocked deposit on top of the blocked account.

Our Germany study visa guide walks through the visa file.

Counselor insight: A "โ‚ฌ0 tuition" label on a third-party page is the quickest route to a wrong budget. For any MBA or continuing-education program, ask JGU for the fee schedule and what the first two semesters add up to, because that is the figure the embassy wants.

University of Mainz Fees Before You Arrive: Recognition, APS, Visa, and Blocked Account

Applications for JGU go through its online portal, JOGU-StINe (the University of Mainz application portal at jogustine.uni-mainz.de). Recognition of your certificates is requested there too, and it takes about six weeks. For Indian applicants, the APS certificate comes first.

Our guide to the APS certificate for Germany covers the steps.

Cost itemAmountIn INRIndia-specific detail
APS certificateRs.18,000about โ‚ฌ164Non-refundable verification fee, paid to APS India before JGU can recognize Indian certificates
Recognition feeโ‚ฌ75Rs.8,250Paid through JOGU-StINe. Refunded if it turns out you did not need recognition, and no second fee for the final certificate
Student visa feeโ‚ฌ75about Rs.8,250Payable in INR only; the embassy sets the INR amount
Blocked accountโ‚ฌ11,904Rs.13.09 lakhYour own money, released at up to โ‚ฌ992 (Rs.1.09 lakh) a month
Travel health insurancePer policyVariesMust be valid from arrival until enrollment

Older JGU department pages still quote a โ‚ฌ60 recognition fee. JGU's April 2026 handout states โ‚ฌ75, so use that.

Counselor insight: Treat APS as the first cheque you write. Recognition cannot be processed without it for Indian certificates, so a late APS delays the โ‚ฌ75 step and every deadline behind it.

University of Mainz Fees for Living: Rent, Health Insurance, and Student Jobs

JGU puts rent at โ‚ฌ300 to โ‚ฌ450 a month (Rs.33,000 to Rs.49,500) and warns that demand peaks at the start of the winter semester. A warm lunch on campus costs a few euros.

Our guide to the cost of living in Germany for Indian students provides a broader overview.

Health insurance is compulsory for your whole degree, and JGU needs an electronic notification from your statutory insurer by enrollment. At Techniker Krankenkasse's 2026 student rates, the monthly cost is โ‚ฌ87.38 for health, a โ‚ฌ23.00 insurer surcharge, and โ‚ฌ35.91 for care insurance (age 23 or over, no children). That totals โ‚ฌ146.29, about Rs.16,100. Other insurers differ slightly in the surcharge.

Check the arithmetic against the blocked account. A monthly release of Rs.1.09 lakh minus rent and insurance (Rs.49,100 to Rs.65,600) leaves roughly Rs.43,500 to Rs.60,000 for food, phone, and books. At work, JGU says you can take a job alongside studies, but international students should confirm the rules with the Foreigners' Registration Office.

Job ads sit on the Career Service portal, and our part-time jobs in Germany guide lists options.

Counselor insight: Plan for year one to be fully funded by savings or a loan, and treat any job income as a bonus. Job hunting starts after you have settled, registered, and confirmed your work rights.

The amount is for a tuition-free master's. On the MBA, add Rs.17.6 lakh of tuition.

Our guides to the cost of MS in Germany and fully funded scholarships in Germany cover funding. JGU also lists DAAD and other scholarships for international students on its financial matters page.

Exchange rate used: Rs.110 per EUR. Verify the current rate before finalizing your budget.

Counselor insight: Blocked account money comes out in monthly installments, and the embassy itself warns that you may need to spend more than โ‚ฌ992 in a month, for example, on a rental deposit. Keep a separate buffer for those first-week costs.

Who Pays What: University of Mainz Fees Decision Framework

  • If you are a final-year BTech student applying to an English-taught master's, tuition is zero. Plan for about Rs.14.25 lakh for year one plus flights, and read our University of Mainz acceptance rate guide for deadlines.
  • If you are a working professional with three or more years of experience weighing the MBA, tuition is โ‚ฌ16,000 (Rs.17.6 lakh) on top of semester fees. Ask for the first two semesters' schedule, because the embassy wants proof of that amount.
  • If you are a parent budgeting a full two-year master's, four semester fees at the current rate come to about Rs.1.61 lakh before any increases, with Germersheim around Rs.10,000 higher.

When University of Mainz Fees Go Wrong: Late, Double, or Unneeded Payments

  • Late re-registration: The fee must be in JGU's account by July 15 or January 15, and online transfers can take a while. A late payment costs โ‚ฌ25 (Rs.2,750).
  • Wrong or double payment: JGU transfers it back to the paying account, usually within eight weeks. If your bank details changed, email studsek@uni-mainz.de.
  • Visa delayed or refused: Waive your place before the lecture period starts, and JGU reimburses the semester fee. After enrollment, leaving by April 30 or October 31 also qualifies.
  • Recognition you did not need: JGU refunds the โ‚ฌ75 and returns your documents.
  • Fee-based program and no visa proof: Without payment confirmation, a loan, or an unblocked deposit for two semesters of tuition, the visa file is incomplete.

3 Takeaways on University of Mainz Fees

  1. Budget the semester fee, not zero. University of Mainz fees are Rs.40,400 per semester at Mainz and Rs.42,900 at Germersheim, with a small rise each year.
  2. Check whether your program is fee-based. The MBA (Rs.17.6 lakh) and Executive MBA (Rs.21.45 lakh) charge tuition, and the embassy wants proof for two semesters.
  3. Fund the upfront costs first. APS, recognition, visa, and the Rs.13.09 lakh blocked account bring year one to about Rs.14.25 lakh.

Frequently Asked Questions About University of Mainz Fees

  • What are the University of Mainz fees for international students?

University of Mainz fees for international students are a semester fee only: โ‚ฌ366.90 on the Mainz campus for winter 2026/27, about Rs.40,400. JGU charges no tuition for ordinary degree students. Fee-based programs such as the MBA (โ‚ฌ16,000) and Executive MBA (โ‚ฌ19,500) are the exceptions, and a one-time โ‚ฌ75 recognition fee applies to most international applicants.

  • Is the University of Mainz free for Indian students?

Tuition is zero for Indian students on ordinary degree programs. JGU charges tuition only from age 60, plus fee-based programs. Every student still pays the semester fee, about Rs.40,400 per semester, and Indian applicants pay Rs.18,000 for APS, a โ‚ฌ75 recognition fee, and a โ‚ฌ75 visa fee. So it is low cost, not zero cost.

  • What is the University of Mainz semester fee for 2026/27?

The semester fee for winter 2026/27 is โ‚ฌ366.90 on the Mainz campus, โ‚ฌ389.80 in Germersheim, and โ‚ฌ378.80 at the Trier Medical Campus. In rupees, that is roughly Rs.40,400, Rs.42,900, and Rs.41,700 at Rs.110 per EUR. The fee funds the semester ticket, student services, sports, and emergency aid, and it is due every semester.

  • Do University of Mainz fees differ between Mainz and Germersheim?

Fees differ by campus, not by faculty. Germersheim students pay โ‚ฌ389.80 per semester against โ‚ฌ366.90 in Mainz, a gap of about Rs.2,500. Over four semesters, that is roughly Rs.10,000. A chemistry student and an economics student on the same campus pay the same amount, so confirm your degree's campus first.

  • How much is the MBA fee at the University of Mainz?

JGU's Gutenberg School of Business charges โ‚ฌ16,000 (Rs.17.6 lakh) for its English-taught MBA and โ‚ฌ19,500 (Rs.21.45 lakh) for the Executive MBA. Both need professional experience, with three years for the MBA. Semester fees are additional. The German Embassy also expects proof of funds for the first two semesters of tuition.

  • Is there an application fee for the University of Mainz?

A โ‚ฌ75 recognition fee is the only application-stage charge we found on JGU's pages, and there is no separate application fee listed. You pay it through the portal. If recognition turns out to be unnecessary, JGU refunds it. The final certificate after a provisional one carries no second fee. Older faculty pages still quote โ‚ฌ60.

  • What is the University of Mainz application portal?

The University of Mainz application portal is JOGU-StINe, at jogustine.uni-mainz.de. You request recognition of foreign certificates there and later submit the degree application. For Indian applicants, upload the APS certificate when asked. Email incomings@international.uni-mainz.de for recognition questions, and studsek@uni-mainz.de for payment or reimbursement queries.

  • Which English taught masters at the University of Mainz are tuition-free?

Two examples of English-taught masters with no tuition (semester fee only) are International Economics and Public Policy and Physics and Meteorology. Check JGU's master's list for others. The English-taught MBA is fee-based at โ‚ฌ16,000. Language requirements differ: one Economics master's list accepts C1 English with IELTS 7.5. Check each degree page and your recognition result before applying.

  • What if I pay my University of Mainz fees late or twice?

Late re-registration costs โ‚ฌ25 (Rs.2,750), because the money must be in JGU's account by July 15 or January 15, and bank transfers can be slow. If you pay twice or too much, JGU sends the surplus back to the paying account, generally within eight weeks. Email studsek@uni-mainz.de if your bank details changed.
