University of Goettingen Acceptance Rate: What Is Published and What Is Estimated
There is no official University of Goettingen acceptance rate, because the university’s published student statistics report enrolment and graduate numbers but no count of applications against offers. Every percentage you see online is therefore an outside estimate.
What the university does publish is who enrolled. In winter 2025/26 it reported 5,074 international students, or 18.6% of all students, and 5,875 students in their first subject semester, according to the same statistics page. Those are enrolment figures, not admission outcomes, so you cannot turn them into an acceptance rate without the number of applicants.

The estimates you will find online range from 15% to 34% and do not agree with each other:
| Source type | Estimate shown | Why it is unreliable |
|---|---|---|
| Admissions portal A | 17% | The same figure appears on several portals, with no method or year given |
| Admissions portal B | About 20% | No method or year given |
| Education marketplace | 15% and 17% on one page | Two different figures for the same year |
| Admissions guide | 32% | The page itself calls it unofficial and says the university does not publish a rate |
| University ranking aggregator | 34% | Marked with an asterisk, with a note that the university does not provide acceptance data |
A single university-wide percentage also hides how admission works. Some programs admit every qualified applicant, while others select among applicants, so one blended number says little about your own chances. The next section shows how that split works. To see where Goettingen sits among other options, read our list of the best universities in Germany for Indian students.
Counselor insight: Indian applicants often shortlist by the headline percentage on a portal. A figure like 17% tells you nothing about the program you are actually applying to, so check that program's selection rule before you label Goettingen a safe choice or a reach.
Why the University of Goettingen Acceptance Rate Differs by Program
Your chances at Goettingen depend on the admission type of your program, not on a university-wide percentage.
What are open and restricted admission programs?
Open admission means the number of admitted students is not limited, and restricted admission means it is, as the university's application guide explains. The Faculty of Business and Economics shows both types on its apply page. Its BSc in Economics is open, while the BSc in Business Administration is restricted. For restricted Bachelor's programs, non-EU applicants apply from 1 March to 30 April for the winter semester. All of that faculty's Bachelor's programs require German.
A third-party site puts the share of restricted programs at about 30% university-wide. Check each program in the university's eCampus before you rely on it.
How are Master's applicants selected?
Selection runs program by program. In business and economics, four Master's programs are open and need German, while the others are restricted and need no German skills. The restricted ones include International Economics and the History of Global Markets.
Applied computer science shows how a restricted selection can work. Its admission rules say selection happens only when qualified applicants outnumber places. In the program's description, every non-EU applicant must pass an online aptitude test, and the test result and an interview both feed into selection. You also submit a personal statement of up to 300 words.
Is there a minimum GPA?
For the Applied Computer Science and Applied Data Science Master's, the program FAQ says there is no minimum GPA and that the selection committee decides. It also says it cannot offer an eligibility check in advance and that selection takes a few months. Some portals claim you need a 2.5 on the German scale. That claim does not match this FAQ, so check each program's own rules.
If you want safer options alongside Goettingen, see our guide to German universities with a high acceptance rate.
Counselor insight: Do not read "no minimum GPA" as "grades do not count". When applicants outnumber places, a committee ranks them, so put your effort into what you control: the subject credits, the aptitude test, and a specific personal statement.
University of Goettingen Admission for Indian Applicants: What the Check Looks Like
Indian applicants clear a document check before any selection begins, and that check is where many applications stall. The university's non-EU application guide lists the steps for Bachelor's applicants.
What documents does the university check first?
- APS certificate: the guide names India among the countries that must submit one.
- Entrance qualification: the International Student Office checks your school-leaving qualification against the anabin database.
- Evaluation fee: the university charges Rs.7,025 (โฌ65) once per application semester to evaluate a foreign entrance qualification.
What if my school certificate is not enough?
If you lack a direct university entrance qualification, you may need to attend a Studienkolleg and pass the Feststellungsprรผfung. The guide says the Studienkolleg Hannover entrance test is not admission to the degree, so you must apply again to the university after you pass. Confirm your own case in anabin before you plan around it.
How does a Master's application differ?
Master's applicants apply directly to the faculty rather than through the central Bachelor's portal, as the Business and Economics apply page states. The Applied Computer Science FAQ adds that the program does not use uni-assist.
Language rules also work in your favour if your degree was taught in English. The same program FAQ says an English-taught degree counts as proof of C1 English, and that German is not required once you prove C1.
Counselor insight: The evaluation fee is charged per application semester, so a late first application that pushes you into the next semester means paying it again. Start APS and your anabin check early so that your first round is the only round.
Beyond the University of Goettingen Acceptance Rate: Fees and Visa Funds
Most Goettingen programs charge no tuition, but every student pays a semester fee of Rs.52,330 (โฌ484.18) for winter 2026/27, according to the university's semester fee page. That fee includes a Germany-wide semester ticket worth Rs.24,513 (โฌ226.80), plus administration, student body, student services and culture ticket charges.
A few programs do charge tuition. The fee-charging Master of International Law (GOMIL) costs Rs.9,18,680 (โฌ8,500) a year for 2027/28 entry, as the program's fee page shows, and its students also pay the semester contribution.
| Cost item | Amount in INR | Amount in EUR | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester fee, winter 2026/27 | Rs.52,330 | โฌ484.18 | Includes the Germany-wide semester ticket |
| Semester fee, two semesters | Rs.1,04,660 | โฌ968.36 | Based on the winter 2026/27 amount |
| Evaluation of foreign entrance qualification | Rs.7,025 | โฌ65 | Per application semester, Bachelor's route |
| GOMIL tuition, 2027/28 entry | Rs.9,18,680 | โฌ8,500 | Fee-charging program only |
| Blocked account, first year | Rs.12,86,584 | โฌ11,904 | Released at Rs.1,07,215 (โฌ992) a month |
The German Mission India checklist asks for the blocked account and, if the university charges tuition, proof of funds for the first two semesters' tuition. For a standard Goettingen program with no tuition, only the blocked account applies. For GOMIL, the two-semester tuition proof is Rs.9,18,680 (โฌ8,500). Our answer on the blocked amount for the Germany visa process explains the mechanics.
This changes the comparison with Baden-Wรผrttemberg, where the DAAD notes that non-EU students pay โฌ1,500 (Rs.1,62,120) per semester. Over a 2-year Master's, that is Rs.6,48,480 (โฌ6,000) in tuition that a standard Goettingen program does not charge. See our guides to University of Freiburg fees and Heidelberg University fees for Indian students for the full numbers.
Exchange rate used: Rs.108.08 per euro. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.
Counselor insight: Indian applicants sometimes rank universities by selectivity alone. If two offers are equally strong, a standard Goettingen program can lower the cash you must show for the visa by Rs.3,24,240 (โฌ3,000) a year compared with a Baden-Wรผrttemberg offer, so put cost next to selectivity in your comparison.
Which University of Goettingen Admission Scenario Fits You?
Your route depends on your degree level, subject and language skills, so match yourself to one of these four Indian applicant scenarios.
- If you are a final-year BTech student graduating in May 2027 and applying to Applied Computer Science, check the credit rule first: 90 ECTS in computer science and related fields, including 60 in computer science. Then prepare for the online aptitude test, the interview, and the personal statement. Your English-taught degree can serve as C1 English proof, and there is no minimum GPA.
- If you are a commerce or economics graduate targeting a Master's in English, look at the restricted business and economics programs that need no German, such as International Economics. Expect a selection among applicants, so apply to more than one program.
- If you are a Class 12 student aiming for a Bachelor's, plan for the APS certificate, the entrance qualification check and a possible Studienkolleg year. Remember that the business and economics bachelor's programs require German.
- If you want a fee-charging program such as GOMIL, budget Rs.9,18,680 (โฌ8,500) a year for tuition on top of the Rs.52,330 (โฌ484.18) semester fee, and add the two-semester tuition proof to your visa file.
Counselor insight: Treat each program as its own admission decision. A mix of one restricted and one open program usually protects you better than three applications to restricted programs with similar selection rules.
Documents for the University of Goettingen Admission and Visa Stage
Document rules differ by faculty, so treat each program page as the final checklist and use this table as the starting set. The visa items follow the German Mission India checklist. If you wonder whether a public university still asks for a blocked account, see our answer on showing a blocked account for Germany public university fees.
| Document | Why it matters | India-specific detail |
|---|---|---|
| APS certificate | Verifies your academic records | The university names India among the countries that must submit it; fee and timeline |
| School-leaving certificate (Bachelor's route) | Checked against the anabin database | Select "Sonstiger Erwerb der HZB im Ausland" in the portal; Rs.7,025 (โฌ65) evaluation fee per application semester |
| Bachelor's transcripts (Master's route) | Show the required subject credits | Applied Computer Science needs 90 ECTS in related fields, 60 of them in computer science |
| English proficiency proof | Required for English-taught programs | An English-taught degree can count as C1 proof for applied computer science; other programs |
| Personal statement, aptitude test, interview | Selection components | Applied Computer Science asks for up to 300 words and an online test for non-EU applicants |
| Blocked account confirmation | Proves first-year living funds | Rs.12,86,584 (โฌ11,904), with withdrawals capped at Rs.1,07,215 (โฌ992) a month |
| Tuition proof for two semesters | Needed only if the program charges tuition | Rs.9,18,680 (โฌ8,500) for GOMIL, as a payment confirmation, education loan or extra deposit |
The embassy checklist states that submitting documents does not guarantee a visa, and incomplete files can be rejected.
Counselor insight: Applicants often prepare one folder for every program. Faculties ask for different statements, tests and credit proofs, so keep a separate checklist per program and a shared folder only for APS and certificates.
What to Do If Your University of Goettingen Application Goes Wrong
A rejection or a missed deadline at a restricted program does not end your Germany plan, because other windows and programs stay open.
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| You are rejected from a restricted program | Selection ranks applicants, so a rejection is not a verdict on you. Apply to the next window or to an open-admission program, and keep other universities on your list. |
| You miss a deadline | Check whether the program also starts in the summer semester. Restricted Business and Economics Master's programs accept applications from 1 Oct to 15 Nov for an April start, but Development Economics, Applied Statistics, and Management start in winter only. |
| APS or documents are delayed | You cannot move forward without them. For the Bachelor's route, a later application semester means paying the Rs.7,025 (โฌ65) evaluation fee again. |
| Your language score falls short | Check the program's own threshold. Applied Computer Science accepts C1 English or B2 English with German DSH, and an English-taught degree can count as C1. |
| Selection results arrive late | The Applied Computer Science FAQ says selection takes a few months. Keep APS, the language test and your blocked account moving while you wait. |
| The visa file is incomplete | The embassy says submitted documents do not guarantee a visa and incomplete files can be rejected. Re-check the checklist before the appointment. |
Counselor insight: Applicants who stop after one rejection often assume the whole university is closed to them. Because each program runs its own selection, a rejected restricted application says nothing about an open-admission program or a later window.
How to Improve Your Odds Beyond the University of Goettingen Acceptance Rate
You improve your chances at Goettingen by working on the parts of selection that the university lets you control. The published rules and FAQs point to three of them.
- Meet the credit rule exactly. For Applied Computer Science, count your ECTS in computer science and related fields before you apply, because the program sets fixed minimums.
- Prepare for the extra steps. Non-EU applicants to Applied Computer Science sit an online aptitude test and attend an interview, and both feed into selection.
- Write a specific personal statement. The program asks for up to 300 words on your motivation, so name the courses and projects that connect your degree to the program.
The university cannot give an eligibility check in advance, so use its published regulations as your checklist and apply to more than one program.
Counselor insight: Applicants often send the same generic statement to every program. A short statement that names one module, one project and one reason for Goettingen reads as a better fit than a longer, general one.
3 Takeaways on University of Goettingen Acceptance Rate
- Treat every online University of Goettingen acceptance rate as an estimate, and judge your chances program by program using open or restricted status and each program's selection rules.
- Start APS, your language test and your entrance qualification check early, because selection takes months and some non-EU windows may close in November of the year before.
- Budget Rs.52,330 (โฌ484.18) per semester and the Rs.12,86,584 (โฌ11,904) blocked account, and add tuition proof only if your program charges tuition, such as GOMIL at Rs.9,18,680 (โฌ8,500) a year.

Frequently Asked Questions on the University of Goettingen Acceptance Rate
-
Do Indian students need an APS certificate for Goettingen?
The university lists India among the countries that must submit an APS certificate, and the German Mission India checklist asks for it at the visa stage too. Start early. On the Bachelor's route, a delay that moves you into the next application semester means paying the Rs.7,025 (โฌ65) evaluation fee again.
-
Is the University of Goettingen free for Indian students?
Most programs charge no tuition, but every student pays a semester fee of Rs.52,330 (โฌ484.18) for winter 2026/27, which includes a Germany-wide semester ticket. A few programs charge tuition, such as the Master of International Law at Rs.9,18,680 (โฌ8,500) a year. Living costs and the blocked account are separate.
-
What if I am rejected from my first-choice program?
Apply to the next window, an open-admission program or another university, because each program runs its own selection. Restricted Business and Economics Master's programs also accept applications from 1 Oct to 15 Nov for an April start. Keep your APS and language documents ready for the next round.
-
Do I need German to study at Goettingen?
It depends on the program. The Business and Economics Bachelor's programs and its open Master's programs require German, while its restricted Master's programs need none. Applied Computer Science accepts C1 English as an alternative to German DSH. Always read the program page for its language rule.
-
What is the difference between open and restricted admission?
Open admission means the number of admitted students is not limited, so qualified applicants are admitted. Restricted admission limits places, and the university selects among qualified applicants. At the Faculty of Business and Economics, for example, the BSc in Economics is open while the BSc in Business Administration is restricted.
-
Is there a minimum GPA for Goettingen?
The Applied Computer Science and Applied Data Science FAQ says there is no minimum GPA and that the selection committee decides. Portals quoting a 2.5 requirement do not match that FAQ. Check each program's regulations, because selection criteria differ by faculty and the university offers no advance eligibility check.
-
Why do websites show different acceptance rates for Goettingen?
University of Goettingen acceptance rate figures differ because portals use undisclosed methods, and several repeat each other's numbers. One page even lists both 15% and 17% for the same year. The university publishes no application counts, so nobody outside it can verify these percentages. Treat them as rough signals, never as your personal chance.
-
What is the University of Goettingen acceptance rate?
The University of Goettingen acceptance rate is not officially published, so any figure is an outside estimate. Online estimates range from 15% to 34% and contradict each other. A more useful question is how selective your own program is, because open programs admit all qualified applicants and restricted ones select among them.
-
Is it hard for Indian students to get into Goettingen?
Difficulty depends on the program. A restricted Master's selects among applicants using factors such as credits, an aptitude test, an interview and a statement, while open programs admit all qualified applicants. Indian applicants also need an APS certificate and an entrance qualification check, so documents and timing matter as much as grades.
