Why a single number misleads
NTNU offers more than 60 English-language international master's programs, each with its own places and applicants. A university-wide percentage would hide that spread, and it would say nothing about where your grades place you in the ranking. Joint programs such as Erasmus Mundus also run their own selection.
Counselor insight: Students see "27%" and either give up or feel falsely safe. Neither reaction is grounded in data. The useful question is not "what share is accepted" but "does my grade average and documentation put me in a competitive position for this specific program".
How NTNU Ranks Applicants Behind the NTNU Trondheim Acceptance Rate
The NTNU Trondheim acceptance rate is really the outcome of a ranking. NTNU explains how it works on its ranking page:
- Your application is ranked on grades from the education that qualifies you for admission.
- Pass/fail courses are left out of the average.
- If the average can be calculated in more than one way, the way that gives the highest score is used.
- Applicants with the same average are ranked by total credits earned and documented, with more credits ranking first.
For foreign degrees, NTNU has no official conversion tables for grading systems, so it assesses each applicant individually. It also says it cannot assess your grade average or qualifications before you apply and advises applying if you are unsure.
Counselor insight: Indian students often ask us to predict a percentage into an NTNU grade. Nobody outside NTNU can do that reliably. Put your effort into what you control: a complete transcript, every qualifying course documented, and a strong average in the courses the program requires.
Is the NTNU Trondheim Acceptance Rate Lower for Indian Students?
NTNU does not publish an India-specific rate, so no one can honestly quote one. What NTNU does report is that 3,815 of its students (9%) are international, from 114 countries. That shows international students are admitted in real numbers, but it says nothing about how many Indian applicants applied.

Grade and English Requirements Behind the NTNU Trondheim Acceptance Rate
Grades. NTNU says applicants to most programs need a relevant bachelor's degree with an average grade of at least C on the ECTS scale. Some programs calculate the C average only on the courses that qualify you for that program, so read your program page. If your degree certificate will be issued after you apply, NTNU says a provisional certificate may be considered if you attach a statement from your university confirming when the degree will be issued. English. According to NTNU's language requirements:
- IELTS Academic needs a minimum of 6.5 on each part of the test. NTNU states that an IELTS of 6.0 is not sufficient.
- IELTS Online and IELTS One Skill Retake are accepted.
- Tests must not be older than two years at the application deadline.
- TOEFL results must be sent from ETS directly to NTNU (department code 9652), as well as uploaded to your application.
Counselor insight: Students often reach 6.5 overall and miss it in a single part. Every part must reach 6.5, so a 7.0 overall does not rescue a 6.0 in writing. Book your first attempt early enough for a retake before the deadline.
NTNU Trondheim Fees and Funds for 2027-28
The NTNU Trondheim acceptance rate gets the attention, but cost decides whether an offer is usable. Students with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland are charged tuition fees, and NTNU does not offer scholarships that cover them.
Tuition per 60-credit year. NTNU lists NOK 176,300 (Rs.17,64,763) for one group of subject areas and NOK 205,600 (Rs.20,58,056) for another group that includes natural sciences and technology. Confirm which group your program belongs to, and the 2027/28 rates, on NTNU's page. A two-year program therefore comes to NOK 352,600 to 411,200 (Rs.35,29,526 to Rs.41,16,112) on our calculation.
A few programs carry lower tuition: Global Relations and Sustainable Development at NOK 26,445 (Rs.2,64,714), International Business and Marketing at NOK 61,705 (Rs.6,17,667), and Fine Art at NOK 30,840 (Rs.3,08,708). Joint Nordic Five Tech master's programs charge no tuition at NTNU, though partner universities might.
Funds for the study permit. NTNU's financing page asks for at least NOK 166,859 a year (Rs.16,70,259), which is about NOK 15,169 a month (Rs.1,51,842). Unlike some Norwegian universities, NTNU requires this documentation with your application. After an offer, you transfer the amount to NTNU's deposit account, and it is returned to you at the start of the semester. NTNU's page dates the figure to 2024/25, so check the current UDI amount.
Payment rules. NTNU does not offer instalments. If you reject your place by 1 August, tuition is refunded except bank fees. Between 1 August and 1 September, a NOK 5,000 (Rs.50,050) cancellation fee applies.

What to Do If Your NTNU Application Goes Wrong
You miss the deadline. Check the program page for any other round. If none, treat the next year as your realistic plan.
One IELTS part is 6.0. It is not sufficient. Retake, and remember, one skill retake results are accepted.
Your bank statement is too old. It must be no older than three months when you apply. Get a fresh statement and re-upload.
Your documents cannot be verified. NTNU can request originals, and applicants who cannot submit adequate documentation lose the right to study. Keep originals safe and organised.
You are rejected. One rejection is not a verdict on the NTNU Trondheim acceptance rate you faced. Ask which requirement fell short, check the program page, and consider a related program next year. NTNU's response page describes an appeal within three weeks of receiving an explanation.
