What Indian students are saying right now: How to Study for the DMAT
What Is DMAT and Who Needs to Prepare for It
DMAT (Digital Master Test) is a new aptitude exam folded into the APS documentation process for a specific slice of Indian applicants. It applies only if both of these are true: your undergraduate degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, and your application targets the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later.

You are exempt if you registered for APS before 29 June 2026, have already shipped your documents, or already hold your APS certificate. Check this first; there's no reason to prepare for a test you don't need.
Counselor insight: The most common mistake in week one is treating DMAT like a knowledge test and pulling out old semester textbooks. What actually gets tested is whether you can apply a concept to a new problem, not how much you can recall.
DMAT Exam Pattern
| Module | What it tests | Time | Format |
| Core: Figure Sequences | Matrix pattern reasoning | 25 min, 20 items | Single-choice |
| Core: Mathematical Equations | Systems of equations, integer unknowns | 25 min, 20 items | Single-choice |
| Core: Latin Squares | 5x5 logic-grid completion | 20 min, 16 items | Single-choice |
| Subject Module (General Academic) | Applied reasoning on a short text | 90 min | Single-choice, 4 options |
Total time is just over three hours (about 3 hours 10 minutes: 70 minutes for the Core Module, 90 minutes for the Subject Module, plus a 30-minute break). No notes or calculator is allowed at any point.
The fee is Rs.16,500 (€150), paid directly to g.a.s.t., separate from your regular APS fee.
How to Prepare for DMAT Core Module
The Core Module is the same for all applicants, regardless of stream, and its formats are unfamiliar to most Indian test-takers, so this section should take up most of your prep time.
Figure Sequences. A shape shifts position, colour or tilt across a run of matrix frames, following one hidden rule. Identify that rule from the first two or three frames, verify it, then apply it. Don't try to track position, colour and rotation all at once on your first pass.
Mathematical Equations. These are systems with letter unknowns (each an integer from 1 to 20), not calculus. Solve whichever equation provides you a direct value first, then substitute that value through the rest.
Latin Squares. A 5x5 grid has some filled cells and one cell marked with a question mark. No letter repeats in a row or column, so eliminate what's already used around the marked cell and pick what's missing. This is closer to Sudoku than anything in a typical Indian syllabus, so budget extra drill time here.
Counselor insight: Students who score well stop trying to be certain and start trying to be quick. Every subtest rewards speed, and an educated guess always beats a blank answer.
How to Prepare for DMAT Subject Module
The General Academic Module isn't tied to your specific stream. Questions are drawn from across quantitative subjects, engineering, business, economics, and even the social sciences. Expect a short input passage, sometimes with a figure or formula, followed by questions built directly on it.
Counselor insight: If you're a B.Com or BBA graduate worried the exam will read like an engineering paper, it won't. The applied business-reasoning questions we've reviewed sit close to what your degree already trained you for. The format is unfamiliar, not the content.
6-Week DMAT Study Plan
| Week | Focus |
| 1 | Read the official g.a.s.t. preparatory material once, untimed |
| 2 | Attempt one full Core Module set under timed conditions |
| 3 | Daily 30-minute drills: Figure Sequences and Latin Squares |
| 4 | Mathematical Equations drills, plus daily Subject Module passages |
| 5 | Two full-length timed mock exams, no calculator or notes |
| 6 | Re-drill your weakest subtest only; confirm test centre seat |
If your test date is 26 September 2026, start week one by mid-August. Registration for the first India cycle closes on 15 September 2026, so lock your test centre in week one or two. Seats fill first-come, first-served in high-demand cities.
Best DMAT Preparation Material
DMAT is brand new in India for 2026, so past-year papers don't exist yet. Start with the free official Preparatory Materials for the General Academic Module, published on the g.a.s.t. dMAT website; this is the only source with detailed task instructions and worked solutions. Work through every exercise twice: once untimed to learn the logic, once timed to build speed.
A reasonable benchmark: run through the official material once in week 1, then treat weeks 2 to 4 as repeated timed drills on the same exercise set rather than hunting for new ones, since the official document only carries a handful of examples per task type. The value is in speed, not volume. Once you're consistently finishing each Core Module subtest within its time limit on the official examples, move to full-length mock exams in week 5, not before.
Independent Indian coaching providers now sell DMAT mock tests and question banks. Treat these as supplementary speed drills only, and cross-check their question style against the official g.a.s.t. material before trusting it. A mock test that deviates from the official format, such as grids larger than 5x5 or figures with more than one moving rule, is testing the wrong thing. Therefore, do not let an unofficial provider's difficulty level replace your calibration against the real exam.
What to Do If You Miss the Deadline or Score Low
Missed the 15 September 2026 registration deadline? There's no announced late-registration window for this cycle. Contact g.a.s.t. at kontakt@gast.de for the next sitting, and flag the delay to your target university's admissions office if it affects your intake.
Scored low? Your result is reported as a score from 0 to 200 (mean 100) alongside a percentile rank; there's no fixed pass mark. A low DMAT score doesn't automatically get your APS certificate refused. Each German university decides independently how much weight to give it.
Unsure if your degree field counts? For interdisciplinary programs (Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Data Science, Financial Technology), check the official Affected Fields List published by APS India before assuming either way.
Your Next 3 Steps
- Confirm whether DMAT applies to you by checking your APS registration date and degree field against the exemption rules.
- Download the free official g.a.s.t. preparatory material this week and run one untimed practice set to find your weakest subtest.
- Register for your preferred test centre as soon as your prep plan is set, well before the 15 September 2026 deadline.
Once DMAT is sorted, the next milestones on your Germany timeline are your Statement of Purpose and shortlisting universities from a verified list of top German Master's programs.

Frequently Asked Questions About How to Prepare for DMAT
-
Is there a fixed syllabus for how to prepare for DMAT?
No. The Core Module tests reasoning speed, not facts. The Subject Module draws on applied academic reasoning, so revising your degree fundamentals helps more than cramming new content.
-
How many weeks does DMAT preparation need?
4 to 6 weeks for most applicants, starting with official g.a.s.t. sample papers. Give yourself the full 6 weeks if the Latin Squares and Figure Sequences formats are new to you.
-
What is the best DMAT preparation material for a beginner?
The free official Preparatory Materials for the General Academic Module on the dMAT website. Add timed mock tests only after you understand each question type.
-
Does DMAT have negative marking?
No credible source confirms a penalty for wrong answers, but leaving a question blank earns nothing, so always attempt every item.
-
Can I skip DMAT if my degree isn't in the listed fields?
Yes. The requirement currently applies only to Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management graduates applying for Summer Semester 2027 or later.
-
Is DMAT compulsory for Winter Semester 2026/27?
No. The first certificates are issued only in October 2026, after most Winter Semester 2026/27 deadlines close.
-
How much does DMAT cost in Indian rupees?
Rs.16,500 (€150), paid directly to g.a.s.t. at registration, separate from your APS fee.
-
Where can Indian students take the DMAT exam?
At g.a.s.t. centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. Final centre availability is confirmed during registration.
-
What documents are needed for DMAT?
Only one is required: a valid passport or government ID that exactly matches what you used at registration, as your name must be spelled identically on both. No academic transcripts or degree certificates are required to sit the exam itself; those belong to your separate APS documentation, not the DMAT registration.
Our counselors have also answered a related question in detail: what documents and requirements apply for Germany's APS, GMAT and BMAT exams. -
What is a good DMAT score?
There's no official pass mark, so "good" depends on where you land relative to other test-takers. Your certificate reports a score from 0 to 200 (mean 100) alongside a percentile rank, and scoring above 100 puts you above the average test-taker. Since German universities weigh the result differently, a strong score matters more at institutions that explicitly factor it into admissions than at ones where it's a secondary document.
