Eligibility Criteria
Knight-Hennessy Scholars has no restrictions based on age, college or university, field of study, or career aspiration. They encourage citizens and residents of all countries to apply. They do not require applicants to seek endorsements from colleges, universities, or other institutions. Additionally, there are no quotas by discipline or program.
There are two baseline eligibility requirements –
Requirement 1: Admission to Stanford
First, in addition to applying to Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS), you must apply to, be accepted by, and enrol in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program including, but not limited to, DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD programs.
Requirement 2: Undergraduate Degree Date
Second, to join the cohort in 2025, you must have earned, in January 2018 or later, a U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college or university.
Benefits –
Knight-Hennessy scholars receive funding for up to three years for any graduate degree(s) at Stanford. This funding applies to the degree(s) to which scholars are preparing to enroll at the time of scholar selection.
During each of the first three years of graduate study, Knight-Hennessy scholars receive several types of funding:
- A fellowship applied directly to cover tuition and associated fees
- A stipend for living and academic expenses (such as room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transportation, and reasonable personal expenses)
- A travel stipend intended to cover an economy-class ticket for one annual trip to and from Stanford.
Additional funding specific to certain years:
- Newly enrolling scholars receive a one-time relocation stipend intended to offset some of the costs associated with relocation to the area and/or technology purchases.
- Scholars in their second and third years may apply for supplemental funds to support academic enrichment activities (e.g., conference travel).

How to apply?
Each incoming Knight-Hennessy scholar must also apply to, be accepted by, and enroll in a full-time Stanford graduate degree program. Unless you have already been offered and deferred admission to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, or you are a first-year Stanford PhD student applying to join KHS in your second year, you must submit separate applications; one to Knight-Hennessy Scholars, and an application(s) to your desired Stanford graduate degree program(s).
Steps to Apply –
Step 1: Create your concurrent KHS application and your Stanford graduate degree program application(s) as early as possible.
Step 2: Enter your recommenders’ information in your applications as early as possible.
Step 3: Complete the various sections of the application, saving your progress as you go. Allow yourself ample time to prepare materials that may take longer to prepare, such as essays or personal statements.
Step 4: Submit the online applications by their respective deadlines.
Step 5: If your Stanford graduate program(s) requires test scores and you receive new scores after submitting your KHS application, update test scores for Knight-Hennessy Scholars through your application status page.
