Counselor insight: A common mistake is applying to colleges listed as sponsors whose license was revoked after enrollment. Always verify your institution's current status on the UKVI register before applying for the Graduate Route, not just before choosing a university.

2027 Rule Change: How the Post Study Work Visa in UK Is Being Cut to 18 Months

The UK government confirmed that from 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route will be reduced from 2 years to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates. PhD graduates are unaffected and will continue to receive 3 years.

When you applyUG / PG durationPhD duration
On or before 31 December 20262 years3 years
On or after 1 January 202718 months3 years

The 2-year window applies toย any student who submits their Graduate Route application on or before 31 December 2026. Students graduating in autumn 2026 who apply promptly still qualify; the deadline is the application date, not the graduation date.

If your September 2026 intake leads to a mid-2027 graduation, your Graduate Route application lands after 1 January 2027, and you receive 18 months, not 2 years. That is a meaningful difference if you need time to find Skilled Worker sponsorship. Talk to a counselor now about your specific intake and course timeline before accepting your offer.

Counselor insight: If the 2-year Graduate Route is a key factor in your UK plans, discuss your specific course timeline with a counselor before accepting your offer. Six months less is the difference between finding sponsored employment and having to leave.

Post Study Work Visa in UK Cost for Indian Students in 2026

The IHS rate of ยฃ1,035 per year applies to Skilled Worker visa holders. Graduate Route and Student Route applicants pay the lower rate ofย ยฃ776 per year, confirmed by the UK Home Office IHS calculator atย Gov.uk

Exchange rate used: Rs. 110 per GBP (approximate as of May 2026). Verify the current rate before finalizing your budget.

Total for a 2-year Graduate Route: Rs.2,73,790 (ยฃ2,489)

Total for a 3-year Graduate Route (PhD): Rs.3,59,150 (ยฃ3,265)

Counselor insight: Indian students typically budget only for the application fee, which can be surprising because the IHS is the larger component. You will need to pay the IHS upfront at the time of application. The IHS isย refunded if your Graduate Route application is refused. If approved and you leave the UK before your visa expires, you can claim a partial refund for the unused months.

How to Apply for the Post Study Work Visa in UK for Indian Students: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Wait for your degree to be formally confirmed

Your university must report your successful completion to the Home Office before your application can proceed. This process is different from receiving your results; it happens after the awards board meeting. If you apply before this report is filed, your application will be refused.

Step 2: Check your Student visa expiry date

You must apply before your visa expires. There is no grace period once it lapses.

Step 3: Apply online

Go to gov.uk/graduate-visa/apply, log in to your UKVI account, and complete the application.

Step 4: Pay the fees

Pay the ยฃ937 application fee and the IHS (ยฃ1,552 for 2 years or ยฃ2,328 for 3 years PhD) during the online application.

Step 5: Verify your identity

Use the free UK Immigration: ID Check app to verify your identity digitally. If the app verification fails, you will be directed to a UKVCAS service point.

Step 6: Await decision

Standard processing is 8 weeks. Priority service (5 working days) costs ยฃ500 (Rs.55,000). Super priority (next working day) costs ยฃ1,000 (Rs.1,10,000). Do not leave the UK or travel outside the Common Travel Area while your application is pending; it will be automatically withdrawn.

Counselor insight: Do not book flights home to India before your decision arrives. We have seen Indian students permanently lose Graduate Route eligibility by traveling home for a family emergency during the processing window. Once you leave the UK while your application is pending, it is automatically withdrawn.

What Indian Students Can and Cannot Do on the Post Study Work Visa in UK

You can:

  • Work full-time or part-time in any role, for any employer, at any salary
  • Switch employers as many times as you want
  • Work as a freelancer or self-employed contractor
  • Seek employment after your visa is granted. No job offer needed to apply

You cannot:

  • Work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach
  • Access public funds (benefits, social housing)

Switching to a Skilled Worker visa: This option is the most common next step for Indian students. Your employer files a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), and you switch in-country; there is no need to return to India. In 2026, the general Skilled Worker salary threshold is ยฃ41,700 per year (or the occupation's going rate, whichever is higher). Recent graduates qualifying as new entrants may apply at a lower threshold of ยฃ33,400. The role must be at RQF Level 6 (graduate level) or above. Verify current thresholds at gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa.

Dependants: Only partners and children already in the UK as your student visa dependants can switch to the Graduate Route with you. If your spouse or family is still in India, they cannot join you under this route. Once you switch to a Skilled Worker visa, your family can apply to join you.

How Indian Students Convert the Post Study Work Visa in UK into a Skilled Worker Visa

Indian graduates consistently represent one of the largest cohorts applying for the Skilled Worker visa after the Graduate Route, reflecting the strong employment appetite among UK-trained Indian graduates.

What the Skilled Worker switch actually requires in 2026

Three conditions must all be met simultaneously:

  • A job offer from a UKVI-licensed sponsor
  • The role must be at RQF Level 6 or above: analyst, engineer, software developer, accountant, or allied health professional. Since 22 July 2025, roles below RQF level 6 no longer qualify for Skilled Worker sponsorship regardless of salary.
  • The salary is at or above ยฃ41,700 per year (general threshold) or ยฃ33,400 for new entrants. Most Indian graduates qualify as new entrants and may apply at the lower ยฃ33,400 threshold but only for roles at RQF Level 6 or above. The new entrant concession does not apply to lower-skilled roles regardless of salary.

From 8 January 2026, B2-level English (IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 per band, with no band below B2) will also be required for new Skilled Worker applications. If any band in your current IELTS result falls below B2, retake the test before your Graduate Route expires.

Which Sectors Realistically Sponsor Indian Students on the Post Study Work Visa in UK

Before applying to any employer, verify they appear on the UK register of licensed sponsors. Over 90,000 employers are registered, but most roles in retail, hospitality, and generalist admin are now excluded by the RQF Level 6 rule even when the salary is met.

Month-by-Month Action Plan for Indian Students on the Post Study Work Visa in UK

Months 1 to 3: Apply to UK graduate schemes immediately. Deadlines for 2027 intakes open August to October. Target employers on the licensed sponsor register in your sector. Apply to a minimum of 20 to 30 roles. Do not wait until your Graduate Route visa arrives; most graduate scheme applications open while decisions are still pending.

Months 4 to 9: Target direct-hire RQF Level 6 roles if graduate scheme windows have closed. Build a UK LinkedIn profile with your degree, university, and Graduate Route status visible. UK recruiters actively search for Graduate Route candidates because no sponsorship is required upfront.

Months 10 to 18: If you are employed but earning below ยฃ41,700, negotiate a raise or move internally. In the fields of technology, finance, and engineering, it is possible to progress from the new entrant threshold to the general threshold within a timeframe of 12 to 18 months.

Months 18 to 24 (or 12 to 18 in the reduced window): Confirm your employer holds a sponsor license. Your employer files the Certificate of Sponsorship, and you switch in-country. Processing takes 3 to 8 weeks. Do not let your Graduate Route expire before the switch is filed.

Counselor insight: The single most avoidable mistake we see is Indian students working for 12 to 18 months at a company that is not on the licensed sponsor register, then discovering at the end of the Graduate Route that the employer cannot sponsor them. Check the register before your second interview, not before your visa expires. It takes 30 seconds on gov.uk and saves you from having to leave the UK.

Salary Expectations on the Post Study Work Visa in UK for Indian Students

There is no minimum salary to work on the Graduate Route. The broad market average for UK graduate starters in 2026 is ยฃ30,500, according to Bridgewater UK's 2026 graduate salary report. At the UK's top 100 graduate employers, the median rises to ยฃ35,000, per High Fliers' The Graduate Market in 2026. Sector matters far more than the headline average.

MBA Graduatesยฃ35,000 to ยฃ55,000Rs.38.5 lakh to Rs.60.5 lakhHESA Graduate Outcomes 2022/23

One number to anchor expectations: The HESA Graduate Outcomes survey found the average salary for first-degree graduates in full-time UK employment was ยฃ30,030, measured 15 months after graduation. Postgraduates report higher. This figure is the realistic starting point for most Indian students in their first UK role, before progression.

Exchange rate: Rs.110 per GBP (approximate, May 2026). Verify before finalizing salary expectations. The UK national minimum wage in 2026 is ยฃ12.21 per hour for workers aged 21 and above (gov.uk). For post-MBA career paths specifically, see Jobs in UK After MBA.

Counselor insight: Indian students who spend the first 6 months in unrelated roles (retail, hospitality) to cover rent often struggle to pivot back into their target industry later. Try to take short contracts or freelance work in your field, even at lower pay. UK employers weigh relevant UK work experience heavily in hiring decisions.

Post Study Work Visa in UK for Indian Students vs. Other Countries: Which Is Better?

CountryDurationJob Offer Needed? Can the family join?PR Pathway?
UK (Graduate Route)2 yrs (3 for PhD); 18 months from Jan 2027NoExisting student dependents onlyYes, via Skilled Worker
Canada (PGWP)Up to 3 yearsNoYesYes, via Express Entry
Australia (Subclass 485)2 to 4 yearsNoYesYes, via state nomination
Germany18 monthsNoYesYes, via a work visa
USA (OPT / STEM OPT)1 year (3 years STEM)Employer files H-1BNoYes, via H-1B / green card

The UK Graduate Route has no employer dependency, an advantage over the US OPT route. However, it is shorter than Canada's PGWP for master's graduates, and from 2027, it will be shorter than Germany's post-study stay as well. Indian students deciding between the UK and Canada should weigh this option carefully alongside the cost of living and PR timelines.

For a head-to-head breakdown, see UK vs. Germany for Indian Students.

Counselor insight: If you hold a degree from a global top-100 university (including IITs and IIMs on the UK's Global Universities List), the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa gives you 2 years of unsponsored work permission in the UK without completing a UK degree first. See the HPI visa guide.

What Indian Students Should Do When the Post Study Work Visa in UK Goes Wrong

Your application is refused: Refusals happen most often because the degree was not formally confirmed before applying or the student visa had already expired. You have 14 days to request an administrative review (ยฃ80, Rs.8,800). If refused on sponsor license grounds, you must leave the UK. There is no in-country remedy.

Your student visa expires before your degree is confirmed: This affects students who resit modules or whose universities delay results. Once your visa lapses, the Graduate Route closes. Contact your university's international student office before your visa expires. Some universities can provide a letter supporting an extension in exceptional circumstances.

Your university's sponsor license is revoked: You get 60 days to find an alternative sponsor or leave. Completing a course at a university that lost its license during your enrollment may disqualify you from the Graduate Route. Check the UKVI sponsor register if you have any doubts about your institution.

You leave the UK while your application is pending: Your application is automatically withdrawn. You cannot reapply from outside the UK. The Graduate Route is permanently unavailable for that degree. Your only routes back are the Skilled Worker visa or re-enrolling as a student. See the UK student visa guide for details.

3 Things Every Indian Student Must Know Before Applying for the Post Study Work Visa in UK

1. Apply only after your degree is formally confirmed. Results on a portal are not the same as a formal award. Your university must report your completion to the Home Office before your application can proceed. Check the awards board date with your registrar's office, not just your results email.

2. Budget Rs.2,73,790 for a 2-year Graduate Route.ย The application fee is ยฃ937, and the IHS is ยฃ1,552 for 2 years (at ยฃ776 per year for Graduate Route applicants), both paid upfront. Most Indian students underestimate the total by a wide margin. Factor these costs into your final-year budget.

3. Apply before 31 December 2026 if you want 2 full years; the deadline is your application date, not your graduation date.ย From 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route drops to 18 months for UG and PG graduates. Students graduating in autumn 2026 who apply promptly still qualify. If you are starting a 1-year master's in September 2026, you will graduate in mid-2027 and receive 18 months. Plan your course timeline carefully.

Frequently Asked Questions About Post Study Work Visa in UK for Indian Students

  • How much is the fee for post study work visa in UK in 2026?

From 8 April 2026, the Graduate Route application fee is ยฃ937 (Rs.1,03,070). Add the Immigration Health Surcharge of ยฃ1,552 (Rs.1,70,720) for 2 years at the correct student/Graduate Route rate of ยฃ776 per year, and the total comes to approximately Rs.2,73,790 (ยฃ2,489). Both are paid upfront during the online application.

  • Is the UK removing the post study work visa in 2026?

No. The Graduate Route continues in 2026 with no plans to scrap it. What is changing: from 1 January 2027, the duration will be reduced from 2 years to 18 months for UG and PG graduates. Students who apply before 31 December 2026 will still receive the full 2 years.

  • What are the common reasons for a post study work visa in UK being refused?

The three most common reasons are applying before your university formally reports your degree completion to the Home Office, applying after your student visa has already expired, and studying at an institution whose sponsor license was revoked. All three are avoidable if you check your visa expiry date and your university's sponsor status before applying.

  • How many hours can I work on the post study work visa in UK?

There is no cap on working hours under the Graduate Route. You can work full-time, part-time, hold multiple jobs at once, or freelance all without restriction. The only roles you cannot take are professional sportsperson or sports coach.

  • What is the success rate of the post study work visa in UK?

The Home Office does not publish an overall approval rate for the Graduate Route. However, refusal rates are low when applications are submitted correctly, that is, with a degree confirmed, a visa still valid, and from inside the UK. The Migration Advisory Committee's 2024 review found the route is functioning as intended with no systemic abuse issues.

  • Is the post study work visa eligible for PR in UK?

Time spent on the Graduate Route does not count towards Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) on its own. To qualify for PR, you need to switch to a qualifying visa, most commonly the Skilled Worker visa, and complete 5 years of continuous residence in the UK. See the PR for UK guide for the full pathway.

  • What are the benefits of the post study work visa in UK for Indian students?

No employment offer needed, no employer sponsorship, no minimum wage, no restriction on the nature of work, and no restriction on the number of employers. You can change careers, freelance, or take a break between jobs. It is also the most direct path to a Skilled Worker visa which does lead to PR.

  • What happens after 2 years of post study work visa in the UK?

The Graduate Route is not extendable. When it expires, you must change to a different visa or depart the UK. The most typical next step is the Skilled Worker visa, where you need to have received a work offer from a licensed sponsor at a salary of ยฃ41,700 per year (or ยฃ33,400 for new immigrants). If you fail to get a sponsor in time, you will have to return to India.
