When International Students Actually Use the “Visit to Study” Route

This is the part most UK ETA guides skip, and it's exactly where "for students" searches usually lead. Non-visa nationals (including Indian students, via the Standard Visitor visa instead of ETA) can visit the UK for up to 6 months to:

• Study a short course at an accredited institution, including English language courses.
• Sit an entrance exam, resit an exam or module, or do a PhD viva.
• Do an elective placement if studying medicine, veterinary science, nursing, midwifery, or dentistry.
• Do an unpaid clinical attachment or dental observer post as an overseas graduate.

• Several third-party guides link to a page called "gov.uk/check-uk-eta-status" for tracking your application. That page does not exist. If you see it referenced anywhere, treat the rest of that source with caution.

How long does a UK ETA application take?

• Most applications submitted through the app receive an automatic decision within minutes.
• The Home Office's official commitment is a decision within 3 working days (weekends and bank holidays don't count).
• A small number of applications are referred for manual review and can take longer; the Home Office factsheet does not guarantee a fixed extended timeline for these, so build in a buffer if your travel date is close.

How to check your UK ETA application status:

1. Check your email first, including spam. UKVI sends the decision from an official gov.uk notifications address, and it contains your reference number.

What About Family Visiting for Graduation?

A common scenario: your family wants to fly in for your UK graduation ceremony. What they need depends entirely on their own passport, not on your student status.
