In loving memory of Dr Anita Borg, a technology rebel, Google launched the Women techmakers scholarship. This scholarship, formerly known as the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, aims to bring gender equality to the tech industry. It supports and encourages women to excel towards leadership roles in technical fields. Further, this scholarship is open for students aspiring to enrol in Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level programs. The selection of candidates is purely based on competitive essays and interviews. Women Techmakers Scholarship for Computer Science (EMEA, APAC, and NA)

This scholarship is an Asia pacific scholarship program for women enrolled at certified colleges and universities. 

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for this scholarship are as follows –

  • Women with excellent technical skills and academic records.
  • Pursuing technical subjects such as computer science, computer engineering, etc.
  • Enrolled in a certified university as a full-time student.
  • Students graduated in the previous year.

Women Techmakers Scholarship for Gaming (EMEA and NA)

It is a scholarship for students residing in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, which comes in partnership with Stadia, the all-new gaming platform of Google. 

Eligibility Criteria

Following are the criteria that an individual becomes eligible to gain its benefits –

  • Enrolled in a certified university in Bachelor’s, master or PhD programs in the Middle East or Africa.
  • Intended to enrol in subjects like informatics, video game programming, computer science, computer engineering, game design and any other game-related fields.
  • Should possess strong and consistent academic records.
  • Demonstrate leadership and passion for increasing the involvement of more women in the field of technology.

Women Techmakers Irish University Scholarship (Ireland)

This scholarship is given only to students residing in Ireland. This move supports, encourages and empowers Irish women to take up roles in the technical field.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria to avail of the benefits of this scholarship are as follows –

  • Candidates must have excellent academic records.
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate program in the first or second year at a certified college or university located in Ireland.
  • Currently pursuing Bachelor’s degree in a technical field from a certified Irish college or university.
  • The applicant is interested in studying computer engineering, computer science or any tech-related subjects.

In addition, female candidates in their final year of graduation program can also apply along with last year’s finalists. If they have received the award already, they will be ineligible to apply for this scholarship program. With the knowledge gained about the different scholarships awarded, let us move on with the documentation and application process.

Women interested in applying for this scholarship program must keep the following documents handy –

  • Letter of recommendation from an instructor, advisor, professor or a supervisor

  • Responses to three questions with short answers and five essay questions.

Application Process

The application process for the WTM scholarship is accepted online only. The application form is available on the official portal of Women Techmakers. Further, female candidates applying for any program under this scholarship scheme must fill out the application forms separately. 

Selection Process for WTM Scholarship

After successful submission of the application form is verified, a selection panel shortlists candidates at Google. This selection is based on academic excellence records, leadership qualities, passion and commitment toward technology and answering the essay questions. Upon selection, the candidates will be notified by the selection panel. Further, all selected candidates will get an invitation to the annual Google Scholars Retreat. This provides a platform for new scholars to interact with fellow scholars and googlers and indulge in various development workshops.

Benefits of Women Techmakers Scholarship

The benefits of this women-centric scholarship program are as follows –

  • A grant is provided to candidates annually during the course duration. The grants offered are as follows –
    • Women Techmakers Scholarship for Computer Science and Gaming – around Rs. 5,86,400 each.
    • Women Techmakers Irish University Scholarship – around Rs. 4,18,900 each.
  • Paid expense trip of 3 days to a Google office for a retreat, with a chance to meet and learn from fellow scholars and expert googlers.
  • Encourages women to work together and change the facet of the technological field by collaborating in projects across the world.

Furthermore, Google offers Women Techmakers scholarships to honour gender equality in the technical field of work. This scholarship is awarded to one undergraduate and one postgraduate finalist among 10 to 20 finalists once per year from different regions of the world. Moreover, this scholarship encourages women to take up leading job roles in the tech industry, dismantling the gender barriers in the technical field.
