  • The student pathway requires 95%+ in Grade 12 or a top-100 university.

Why the UAE Golden Visa for Indians Has Six Different Pathways

Indians are the largest group of expats living in the UAE. About 3.5 million Indians live there. The UAE Golden Visa for Indians is a long-term residency visa that can be renewed every 10 years. Once granted, you don’t need a local employer or sponsor.

There isn’t just one way. Under the Golden Visa scheme, the UAE government currently offers six main types. You can get one of them if you are a student, a salaried worker, an investor in a business, or a researcher. It’s a waste of time and money to apply under the wrong category.

The Student Golden Visa for High Achievers: What Indian Students Need to Know

The easiest way for Indians to get a UAE Golden Visa is to become a student. However, most Indian families overlook this option when considering their choices. The investor and professional routes require a significant amount of money or a specific salary. The student route, on the other hand, doesn't need any money at all.

Two routes qualify under the student pathway:

Route 1: High Achievers in Secondary School

You can apply if you got at least 95% on your Grade 12 board exams, which could have been given by CBSE, ICSE, or a recognized state board. If the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and then the UAE Embassy in New Delhi, Mumbai, or Chennai sign off on the school results, and the UAE government will accept them.

Route 2: Students at the top 100 universities in the world

The student Golden Visa is for people who are currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from a university that is ranked in the top 100 in the world by either the QS World University Rankings or the Times Higher Education Rankings. Indian schools aren't in the global top 100 right now, so this route is mostly for Indians studying in the UAE or at qualifying institutions outside of India.

This is what the student Golden Visa gives you:

  • 5-year residency that can be extended to 10 years
  • No need for a sponsor or employer
  • The right to stay in the UAE while you finish school or start a new job
  • Way to change to a Skilled Professional Golden Visa after meeting salary requirements

Counselor insight: The process for attesting Indian school documents is hard for most people who are applying for the first time. Your CBSE or ICSE marks must be attested in this order: first by the issuing school or board, then by the MEA in New Delhi, and finally by the UAE Embassy. It normally takes 6 to 8 weeks to do this. The busiest times at MEA offices are in March and October, so send your application at least 10 weeks ahead of time if you want to use those months.

Step-by-Step Application Process for UAE Golden Visa for Indians

Step 1: Make Sure You Know Your Way. See the table above for eligibility to make sure you're in the right category. If you apply under the wrong category, you will be turned down and not get your fees back.

Step 2: Sign your Indian papers. In India, all documents need to be attested in this order:

  • Notarization at a nearby notary
  • Attestation by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi, which can be done in person or by speed mail.
  • Attestation from the UAE Embassy in India (New Delhi, Mumbai, or Chennai consulates).

Step 3: Apply online through the ICP Portal. To do so, go to icp.gov.ae. Sign up for an account, click on "Golden Residence," pick a category, upload documents that prove who you are, and pay the fees online.

Counselor insight: One thing most applicants discover after creating their ICP account: document format rejections. The portal is strict about file size, resolution, and document orientation. Scan your attested originals at 300 DPI minimum, in PDF format, with each page oriented correctly. A blurry scan or a sideways marksheet page can delay your application by 2–3 weeks without a clear error message.

Step4: Take a medical fitness test. People in the UAE do this at a health center that is approved by the government. Non-Indian applicants in India must get a different visa or a sponsor.

Step 5: Sign up for an Emirates ID. Once your visa is approved, you will need to register your Emirates ID at an ICP service center in the UAE. This is where biometrics are collected.

Step 6: Getting the visa stamped. You get a Golden Visa stamp in your passport. Processing usually takes between 10 and 30 business days from the time the application is sent in.

Cost Breakdown: UAE Golden Visa for Indians in 2026

Fee ComponentAmount in AEDAmount in INR (approx.)
Application Processing (ICP)AED 100Rs. 2,534
Visa Issuance FeeAED 2,000Rs. 50,680
Emirates ID FeeAED 370Rs. 9,376
Medical Fitness TestAED 250 – 700Rs. 6,335 – 17,738
Document Attestation (India)VariesRs. 2,000 – 5,000
Typing / PRO Services (Optional)AED 200 – 500Rs. 5,068 – 12,670
Estimated Total (Self-Applied)AED 2,800 – 3,270Rs. 68,924 – 82,861
Note: INR conversions are based on an approximate exchange rate of 1 AED = 25.34 INR.

Counselor insight: The fee table covers government charges only. The real cost surprise for Indian applicants is the attestation chain. State HRD attestation for a private university degree can cost Rs.3,000–8,000 and take 6–8 weeks in some states before the MEA even begins. Build Rs.15,000–25,000 and 10–12 weeks into your total attestation budget, not the Rs.2,000–5,000 shown above.

Life After Approval: Benefits of the UAE Golden Visa for Indians

After being approved, the UAE Golden Visa for Indians gives you:

  • Long-term residency: Ten years (5 years for students), renewable without the need for a local sponsor
  • Family sponsorship: With a Golden Visa, you can bring your spouse, children, and parents with you. There is no limit on the number of domestic workers you can bring with you.
  • No limits on leaving and coming back: You can stay outside of the UAE for longer than 6 months without having your visa revoked (normally, it's revoked after 6 months abroad).
  • Multiple entry privileges: You can enter the UAE as many times as you want.
  • Banks and businesses can do more: It's easier to start a business and open a bank account in the UAE without a local sponsor.
  • No job tie as a requirement: With a Golden Visa, you don't have to stay with one employer, as you do with an employment visa.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong

  • The application was turned down without a clear reason: Sometimes, ICP rejection notices come with general error codes. Check the reason for the rejection in your ICP account and ask for a re-evaluation through the ICP service center. A lot of the time, rejections are caused by mistakes in attesting documents, not problems with eligibility.
  • MEA certification is late by more than six weeks: Get in touch with the MEA Regional Passport Office that is in charge of your application. If you applied using Speed Post, monitor the package closely. There are many MEA delays in August and September. If you want to submit in the middle of the year, give yourself at least eight weeks of extra time.
  • For the Skilled Professional route, a salary certificate is not accepted: The UAE authority wants the salary certificate to be on the company letterhead, signed by HR, and sometimes notarized by a public notary in the UAE if it was issued in the UAE. If your boss gave it to you in India, you need an MEA attestation.
  • The property is worth less than 2 million AED: In 2024, the minimum value of a property increased to AED 2 million. Properties bought before this change at a lower threshold might have benefited from rules that helped them get through it. Check with the Dubai Land Department or the land authority in your emirate to see if the property you already own meets the requirements.

Conclusion

  • Before you pay any fees, make sure that your pathway fits your profile. Most Indians who don't have a lot of money to invest can get through the student route (95%+ in Grade 12 or top-100 university) and the skilled professional route (AED 30,000/month salary). Applying under the wrong category costs you time and money.
  • Start attesting your Indian documents three months before you want to send them. It can take 8 to 12 weeks for the MEA to certify something, and then the UAE Embassy to certify it. The most common reason why Indian Golden Visa applications are late is that applicants forget to complete this step.
  • The Golden Visa lets you live in the country, not become a citizen. It gives you stability for 10 years, the right to have a family sponsor you, and the freedom to choose your job, but for most holders, it doesn't lead to UAE citizenship.

Frequently Asked Questions for UAE Golden Visa for Indians

  • Can Indians apply for UAE Golden Visa from India without being in the UAE first?

Indian citizens can use the ICP online portal to start the application process from within India. The applicant must complete the medical fitness test, Emirates ID biometrics, and visa stamping in the UAE. To finish the last steps, most applicants come in on a visit or tourist visa.

  • What is the UAE Golden Visa fee for Indians in INR?

The total cost, which includes ICP application fees, an Emirates ID, and a medical fitness test, is between Rs. 68,924 and Rs. 82,861, which is about AED 2,800 and AED 3,270 at the current exchange rate of Rs. 25.34 per AED. Based on the number of documents, attestation on the Indian side costs an extra Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 20,000.

  • Does the UAE Golden Visa lead to UAE citizenship?

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term visa for living in the UAE. It is not a way to become a citizen. Citizenship in the UAE is very rare, and it's not automatically given with any residency visa, even the Golden Visa.

  • Which Indian board exams qualify for the student Golden Visa?

Results from CBSE, ICSE, and other recognized Indian state boards are accepted as long as the student got at least 95% in Grade 12, and the marksheets are attested by both the MEA and the UAE Embassy.

  • Can I sponsor my parents on a UAE Golden Visa?

Yes. If you have a UAE Golden Visa, you can bring your parents, spouse, and children with you without having to meet a separate salary requirement. In order to sponsor dependents, standard UAE employment visas require a minimum salary of AED 4,000 to AED 10,000.

  • What happens if my property value drops below AED 2 million after I get the visa?

The Golden Visa is based on how much the property is worth when the application is made. Even if the property value goes down later, the visa will still be valid. But in order to renew, the value may need to be confirmed at the AED 2 million level. Check with the Dubai Land Department to make sure of the renewal terms.

  • How long does the UAE Golden Visa processing take for Indians?

Processing takes 10 to 30 working days from the time the full application is sent through the ICP portal. Attestation of documents on the Indian side takes an extra 6 to 10 weeks before you can even send them in. Give yourself three to four months to finish.

  • My salary in UAE is slightly below AED 30,000. Can I still apply under the Skilled Professional route?

For the Skilled Professional category, the monthly salary requirement is AED 30,000. If your salary is less than this, you might still be able to get in through a different route, like the Researcher pathway if you have a PhD or the Entrepreneur pathway if you have a business in the UAE that is registered.

  • What are the benefits, and how long is it valid?

The Golden Visa is valid for 10 years and is renewable. Key benefits include long-term residency without a local sponsor, the ability to sponsor family members, 100% business ownership, and a 6-month re-entry permit if you stay outside the UAE — making it highly attractive for Indian professionals and investors.

  • What documents are required for UAE Golden Visa by Indian applicants?

You typically need a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity), UAE residence visa, Emirates ID, proof of investment or employment/salary certificate, educational certificates (attested), health insurance, and a clean criminal record certificate. All documents must be attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs before submission.
