The drop box for US visa renewals, officially called the Interview Waiver Program, lets certain eligible applicants submit their documents at a designated location instead of attending a face-to-face interview at a US embassy or consulate. It's also written as "Dropbox" in many places, but it's the same program either way. In India, eligible applicants can book an interview waiver appointment through the official US visa appointment portal for India.

Here's the part most people miss: Eligibility for this drop box for the US visa process is decided entirely by the US Department of State, and it changes. It changed significantly and recently, which is precisely why so much of what's floating around online about who qualifies is now wrong.

My insight: The single biggest mistake I notice is when a student assumes last year's drop box for US visa eligibility still applies to them. Always check the current rule before you plan your travel dates around skipping an interview.

As of September 2, 2025, the US Department of State's official update narrowed drop box eligibility to a short list, and consular officers can still call anyone in for an interview even if they technically qualify. A follow-up update dated September 18, 2025 took effect October 1, 2025. It added H-2A agricultural renewals to the eligible list and replaced the July 2025 version, so it is the only rule in force through 2026.

Note: Since July 15, 2026, all nonimmigrant visa applicants are also instructed to schedule at the US Embassy or Consulate in their country of nationality or residence. Fees paid for out-of-jurisdiction applications are non-refundable and non-transferable, and waits are expected to be significantly longer.

My insight: If your previous visa was in a different category from the one you're applying for now (for example, F-1 earlier and H-1B now), you have not been eligible since February 18, 2025. Before that date, a prior visa in almost any category apart from B-only, expired within 48 months, could qualify. Those expanded pandemic-era rules are gone.

Before September 2, 2025:

• Applicants whose prior visa was in any category except B-only could use the drop box if it had expired within 48 months.
• That eligible list included F1, J1, M1, H-1B, and L-1 holders.
• Children under 14 and adults over 79 were exempt from interviews entirely.

February 18 to September 1, 2025:

• The renewal window was cut from 48 months to 12, and the prior visa had to be in the same category as the new application.
• Same-category F1, J1, M1, H-1B, L-1, and O-1 renewals are still qualified.
• The age-based exemptions for under 14 and over 79 still applied.

From September 2, 2025 (State Department update of July 25, 2025):

• The 12-month window now applies only to B-1/B-2 and Border Crossing Card renewals.
• F1, J1, M1, H-1B, L-1, and O-1 were removed from the eligible list.
• The age-based interview exemption was removed for both children and seniors.

From October 1, 2025 (State Department update of September 18, 2025):

• H-2A agricultural renewals were added back. It is the only category added since the rollback began, and it is the rule still in force in October 2026.

Why this change matters if you're a student: A student who used the drop box to renew an F1 visa two years ago almost certainly cannot do the same today. A lot of study abroad content online still describes the pre-September 2025 rules, or even pre-February 2025, rules. If you plan your travel around skipping an interview based on that outdated information, you risk finding out you need a slot at the exact moment you don't have time to book one.

My insight: We're seeing students discover these realities the hard way, close to their intake date, after assuming they'd qualify based on a friend's experience from a year or two back. Confirm your specific status early, not the week before you need to travel.

For most students and workers today, this is the actual path, not the drop box for the US visa route.

1. Complete the DS-160 form online and print the confirmation page.
2. Pay the visa application (MRV) fee.
3. F, M, and J applicants: pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and keep the receipt.
4. Create a profile and schedule your interview appointment through the official US visa appointment portal for India.
5. Complete your OFC biometrics appointment separately, if your location requires one before the interview. In India, you book two appointments: biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Center, then the interview at the US Embassy in New Delhi or the consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata.
6. Attend the interview with your documents. F, M, and J applicants fall under the Department of State's online presence review, and applicants in covered categories are instructed to set their social media profiles to public before the interview.
7. Track your case status online afterward, and wait for your passport to be returned with the visa stamped in, or a status update if further processing is needed.

Interview slots at high-volume posts in India fill up well ahead of the Fall 2027 intake season, and Jan 2027 applicants are already competing for the earliest available dates, so start step one as soon as your documents allow.

My insight: Don't wait for your I-20 or I-797 to be in final form before starting the DS-160 and scheduling process. You can begin scheduling with a provisional appointment and adjust once your documents are ready. If your city shows a long wait, consider a nearby Indian post. Chennai is under half a month for students right now, while Mumbai is 2.5 months.

Whether you end up at an interview or, less likely now, an actual drop box for US visa submission, most of this list stays the same.

A US visa application involves more than one fee, and they're paid on different portals at different points in the process. Here's what to actually budget for.

The Visa Integrity Fee was created by federal law in 2025, but as of October 7, 2026, it hasn't appeared on the official fee schedule yet, and no universal collection date has been published. When it starts, it is meant to be collected at visa issuance rather than application, so you would not pay it on a refused visa. It is a minimum of $250 and is set to rise with inflation from fiscal year 2026. Treat it as a cost to watch for rather than one you'll definitely pay today, and verify directly with your consulate before budgeting for it.

Log into your visa appointment profile and re-check your eligibility status; the system re-evaluates this each time you start a new application. If you no longer qualify, cancel the drop box appointment and book a standard interview slot right away, since interview appointments are facing far more demand than drop box slots right now.

You're not sure if you still qualify

Don't assume you still qualify based on last year's outcome or someone else's experience. Complete a DS-160, then open your profile on the official appointment portal for India and answer the interview waiver questions there; they reflect the current rules, not last year's. Your visa gets refused under Section 214(b) after switching to an interview

That outcome is unrelated to drop box eligibility. The outcome depends on how you presented your case at the interview, not on which submission method you used to get there. A past refusal can also rule you out of a future drop box unless it was overcome or waived.

You're running short on time before your travel or intake date

Build in at least a three- to four-week buffer between your interview and your travel date regardless. Even approved applications can take time for the passport to be returned, especially if additional administrative processing is triggered. Delhi and Mumbai student slots are about 2 to 2.5 months out.
