1. Summer Work Travel

10. Au Pair or Edu care

To get a J1 visa US for the Au Pair program category, the applicant must be between 18 to 26 years old. They will be placed with a host family for a duration of 12 months. Prior to this, they will have to undergo a training program for working with children so they can be better prepared.

11. International Visitor

The applicant needs to be selected by the United States Department of State in order to qualify for this category of the J1 visa. As an international visitor, the applicant must take part in research, consultations, observation, and training. They must be a recognized individual in a specialized field.

12. Specialist

With a J1 visa US for the specialist category, an individual can stay up to a year. They must be an expert in their respective field and must not be looking to be employed on a full-time basis in the United States.

13. Trainee

14. Professor

15. Intern

The sponsor must provide you and your dependents with information about the opted program. They are required to conduct an orientation providing you with the information about the region where you will study.

• Follow the J1 visa US rules

You must maintain the active status as a J1 student. You and the sponsor must make sure to adhere to all the rules of the J1 visa US. The sponsor must also provide you with a 24-hour emergency contact.

• Have a valid passport

You and your dependents must make sure that you have passports that are valid for travel to the US about 6 months ahead of the date of the completion of the program.

• Meet the requirements for the home residency program

Upon completion of the program, you must return to your home country and stay there for at least a period of 2 years.

• Maintain full-time enrollment during the academic year

Though you can work on a full-time basis during the academic breaks, you should also make sure that you are enrolled in a full-time study program when the academic year is in session.

• Follow the restrictions of the work

If you wish to work while studying in the academic program, make sure that you work part-time on the campus, maximum for about 20 hours per week. You are also required to work during the academic year on a full-time basis. Though, if you do not have authorization from the university or the sponsor, you are not permitted to work off-campus.

• Make sure that your current address is updated

In any case, if you are changing your residence, make sure you also update the university and the sponsor of the change in address within 10 days of doing so.

How to Submit a J1 Visa US Application?

The steps required to submit the application for a J1 visa in the US are as given below –

1. Identify and decide on a sponsor

The main condition of receiving a J1 student visa is that your program should be sponsored by a non-personal source. You should first identify a sponsor who is willing to fund the program. The sponsor needs to be accredited by the United States Department of State.

2. Submit the DS 2019 Form

After finalizing the sponsor and being accepted into the program, you must submit the Form DS-2019. The form acts as the Certificate of Eligibility for the J-1 status. There is a different version of the form if you also have any dependents with you, so make sure you receive the right form. The form should be issued by your designated sponsor.

3. Pay the additional fees

Apart from the fee of the program, there are other fees that you need to pay during your application process too. You must pay the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) I-901 fee to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Other additional fees include a visa issuance fee along with a non-immigrant visa application processing fee. Both of these can be paid at the US embassy of your home country. The fees are not required to be paid if your program is a US government-funded educational and cultural exchange program or is sponsored by the Department of State, US Agency for International Development (USAID).

4. Schedule the visa interview

A consular officer has to take your interview at your local US Embassy or Consulate for the acceptance of your application. Different countries can have different waiting times for the visa; therefore, you must schedule your interview accordingly.

5. Attend the visa interview

The J1 visa US is valid for a period equivalent to the duration of their training or visit to the country. The applicants can receive a grace period of 30 days after the completion of their program.
