The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) is a collaboration between – 

  • Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), 
  • Nanyang Technological University (NTU),
  • National University of Singapore (NUS),
  • Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and the
  • Singapore Management University (SMU). 

PhD training is carried out in English at a student’s chosen lab at A*STAR research institutes and NTU/NUS/SUTD/SMU. Upon successful completion, students are conferred a PhD degree by either NTU, NUS, SUTD or SMU. SINGA fosters a vibrant and culturally diverse research community of international students. You’ll be working in a multi-cultural environment alongside distinguished and world-renowned researchers in state-of-the-art facilities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open for application to all international graduates with excellent academic results.
  • Good skills in written and spoken English
  • Good reports from academic referees
  • There is no age limit for SINGA applicants. While SINGA is targeted at younger applicants, mature applicants with relevant research experience will be considered.
  • Hold a passion for research and willing to research program on selected areas like:
    • Biomedical Sciences
    • Computing and Information Sciences
    • Technology
    • Physical Science
    • Engineering
  • GRE / IELTS / TOEFL / SAT I & II / GATE results are not mandatory for SINGA application. However, do note that you may be requested by the university to submit satisfactory scores as part of the university admission requirement.

Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) 2024

Benefits

The award provides financial support for up to 4 years of PhD studies. It includes –

  • Full support of tuition fees
  • Stipends – SGD 2,700 per month (SGD 32,400 or INR 19 Lakhs per annum), to be increased to SGD 3,200 per month (SGD 38,400 or INR 23 Lakhs per annum) after passing Qualifying Examinations
  • One-time SGD 1,000 or INR 60,000 settling-in allowance
  • One-time airfare grant of SGD 1,500 or INR 92,000 

Documents Required

  • Valid Passport
  • Recent passport-size photo (in .jpeg or .png format)
  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s academic transcripts
  • Bachelor’s Degree certificate(s) / scroll(s) or a letter of certification from the university on your candidature if your degree certificate / scroll has not yet been conferred.
  • 2 recommendation reports (to be completed and submitted online by the referees).
  • Applicants applying to NUS supervisors/projects are required to submit your GRE scores in your SINGA application form.
  • For all other applicants, you may be requested by the university to submit satisfactory GRE scores as part of the university admission requirement.
  • The submission of IELTS / TOEFL / SAT I & II / GATE results is optional and may be requested later by the university for admission.

How to apply?

  1. Go to Research Areas to browse the projects you are interested in on the official website.
  2. Prepare the documents in advance before applying. Do not mail any hard copy documents to SINGA Office. All necessary documents are to be submitted online.
  3. Transcripts need to be in English translation.
  4. Register from here.
  5. Log into your account and press apply to scholarship (choose Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA)).
  6. Fill the application form.

  • Q. Where can my academic referees send their recommendation letters to and will referees send their recommendation letters through email attachments or hardcopies directly to the SINGA office be accepted?

    A. Upon submission of your online application, an email will be sent to your academic referees prompting them to complete an online recommendation form within 7 days of your application submission date. Please note that recommendation letters should be submitted through the online portal. Email attachments or hardcopies sent directly to the SINGA office will not be processed.

  • Q. Do I need to apply for admission to the A*STAR research institute separately from SINGA application?

    A. No, you do not have to apply separately to the A*STAR research institute. You should indicate the A*STAR research institutes and supervisors you are interested to work with in your SINGA application.

  • Q. Will graduate students be more competitive than undergraduates?

    A. Graduate students would be assessed more closely on their research experience compared to an undergraduate. The success of the candidate for SINGA will depend on the project submission and interview process.

  • Q. Do I need to submit a research proposal for SINGA application?

    A. Yes, you will need to write your research proposal and elaborate on the selected research topic in your application form.

  • Q. What are the English requirements to apply for SINGA? Specifically, is GRE required?
