Immigration New Zealand has published full details of the Pathway Student Visa, a new route that lets international students cover up to three consecutive courses under a single visa application and remain in the country for as long as five years.
New Zealand Pathway Student Visa: the key facts
- Length of stay: Up to 5 years, covering up to 3 programmes of study, one after another, without a fresh visa application between courses (students still need to meet the entry requirements for each subsequent course).
- Visa cost: From Rs.41,730 (NZD $750).ย
- Processing time: 80% of applications are decided within 8 weeks.
- Work rights: Part-time work up to 25 hours a week during the term and full-time during scheduled holidays (subject to course conditions).
- Family: Partners and dependent children cannot be included on the same application; they must apply separately based on their relationship to the main applicant.
- Applications: Paper applications are no longer accepted; all submissions must now be made online.
Applicants must also show enough money to live on for the full stay, as Immigration New Zealand’s financial requirements for the visa lay out. Self-funded students need Rs.11,12,800 (NZD $20,000) per year of study, or Rs.92,733 (NZD $1,667) per month for courses shorter than a year, unless they have a sponsor or scholarship covering living costs.
Exchange rate used: Rs.55.64 per NZD as of September 2026. Verify the current rate before finalizing your budget.

Why the Pathway Student Visa Matters for Indian Students?
This visa is built for students on a multi-stage academic plan, for example, a foundation diploma followed by a bachelor's degree and then a master's at a pathway education provider. Instead of applying, paying the fee, and waiting on processing three separate times, a student can move between these courses on one visa, as long as they've been offered a place for each stage and meet its entry requirements. That cuts repeat visa costs and removes the risk of a processing delay breaking up an otherwise continuous study plan.
It's worth noting the New Zealand Pathway Student Visa isn't a universal upgrade to every student visa; it only applies to students enrolled with a recognised pathway education provider. Not every institution offers pathway programmes.
What to Do Now
Before counting on this route, check with your intended institution whether it is listed as a pathway education provider and whether your intended courses form an approved study pathway. The visa only works if each course in the sequence is confirmed at the application stage or as you progress. Immigration New Zealand recommends applying at least 3 months before your intended travel date.
