Key notes:

The cost of getting an MBBS at Brunel in 2026-27 is £49,395. Some costs are defrayed through a merit-based interview process for their scholarship. You’d need to ask the admissions office directly about how much the scholarship is and if it is available for 2026 entry; their scholarship page for 2023 entry was the last confirmed cycle. Imperial’s study grants for MBBS students are mostly for people already in the program. You can’t fill these out until you get there.

MBBS Scholarships in UK That Do Not Cover Undergraduates

  • The Chevening Scholarship: Chevening is the UK government's flagship international scholarship, funded by the FCDO. It funds only one-year taught master's degrees, not undergraduate programs, not medicine, and not MBBS degrees. Indian applicants must hold a bachelor's degree and 2+ years of work experience before applying..
  • Commonwealth Scholarships: Most categories are for graduate school and PhD work. After you complete, you can also get a distance learning scholarship.
  • GREAT Scholarships: The British Council’s GREAT Scholarships cover at least £10,000 of the cost of a one-year postgraduate study. The scholarship funds postgraduate taught programs only, not undergraduate MBBS.
  • University of Manchester international awards: The University of Manchester will give more than 330 prizes worth more than £6 million to overseas students from September 2026. Most of these are for bachelor's and master's degrees. Their page for applying to medical school does not have a separate list of grants just for international MBBS students.

Counselor insight: Every year, students spend months working on their Chevening applications because they think they cover MBBS. Before you spend time on an application, you should always read the part that says "eligible programs." If the scholarship page doesn't list MBBS or Medicine as an eligible topic, assume it isn't.

Eligibility Requirements for MBBS Scholarships in UK

The academic requirements for MBBS scholarships in UK are very high. UK medical schools require you to score between 85% and 95% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Class 12 and an IELTS score of between 7.0 and 7.5 (with no band below 6.5 or 7.0).

The BMAT test has been discontinued. For merit-based scholarships at UK medical schools, a UCAT cognitive score of 2,400+ (out of 2,700) with a Situational Judgement Band 1 or 2 is generally competitive. The 2,700 figure is the maximum possible score; most schools use cohort percentiles rather than fixed cutoffs. Check each school's admissions page for its current thresholds.

Two academic referencesOn school/college letterhead, one from a science teacher who taught you in Class 12 is standard

Counselor insight: The TB certificate surprises many students just before they have to submit their visas. Schedule your TB test at least six weeks before the deadline to submit an application for a visa. Clinics approved by the UKVI in big Indian cities are generally busy, especially during May and August.

What MBBS in the UK Actually Costs for Indian Students

UniversityAnnual Tuition (GBP)Annual Tuition (INR)5-Year Estimate (INR)
University of Cambridge£70,554Rs. 91.2 lakhRs. 4.6 crore
University of Oxford£49,400 (pre-clinical)Rs. 63.9 lakhRs. 3.5 crore (approx.)
Imperial College London£58,600Rs. 75.8 lakhRs. 3.8 crore
University of Edinburgh£38,500Rs. 49.8 lakhRs. 2.5 crore
Brunel University London£49,395Rs. 63.9 lakhRs. 3.2 crore
University of Leicester£29,000Rs. 37.5 lakhRs. 1.9 crore
Exchange rate used: INR conversions are based on an approximate exchange rate of £1 = 129.34 INR (May 2026).

Note: Oxford and Cambridge MBBS are 6 years (pre-clinical + clinical). The 5-year estimate column is not applicable to these programs; contact each university for a 6-year total cost breakdown.

Counselor insight: Most Indian families we work with have no idea what the cost of living in London is. The real expenses of accommodation, food, and travel at Brunel or Imperial are usually in the range of Rs.18 lakh to Rs.20 lakh per year for the students. Accommodation, food, and transport in London typically add Rs.18–20 lakh per year on top of tuition. These costs are fixed and non-negotiable; a partial scholarship on fees doesn't reduce your living expenses.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong

  • Did not meet the UCAS limit for medicine. Only medicine has a UCAS deadline of 15 October. UCAS clearing doesn't work for medicine because there is no late choice. The next likely time to get in would be September of next year. Do something useful with the year in between. Re-take the UCAT if you need to. Get some clinical shadowing hours. Prepare your grant applications for the next round.
  • If your scholarship application was unsuccessful, you should immediately apply for any university bursaries you didn't apply for the first time around. Most bursaries are not the big merit scholarships and have later deadlines. A bursary of Rs.1.3-6.5 lakh per annum will not pay your fees, but it will save a lot of money for your family.
  • Low UCAT score: You can retake the UCAT; it’s offered every year, July-September. If you score below 2500, you will have fewer choices in medical schools and a lower chance of receiving a scholarship. Scores get much better with structured study using UCAT question banks, which you can find through the official UCAT consortium. Structure your UCAT preparation across the academic year, not just a few weeks before the test window opens.
  • The amount you still have to pay after a partial scholarship: UK student visa rules say you need to show you have enough money in your bank account for 28 consecutive days to pay for your school fees and living costs. A letter saying you’ve been awarded a grant in part doesn’t mean you’ve got the rest of the money. You’ve got to show the difference in cash. So if your grant takes your first year fee from £49,000 to £46,600, you still have to prove you have £46,600 plus your living costs. Work out how much you need to pay. Check the UKVI website for the current maintenance requirement for your study city before calculating your 28-day bank balance.
  • Class 12 marks were late: If you let most UK universities know in advance that you will be delayed, they will hold conditional offers open for you. Don't wait for the admissions office to withdraw your offer; contact them first. Your school should give the official letter to confirm the delay. If the reason is that the results are delayed, most scholarship panels will give you more time.

3 Takeaways about MBBS Scholarship in UK for Indian Students

  • The UK widely discusses MBBS Scholarships in UK, the Chevening, GREAT, and Commonwealth grants, which don’t apply to MBBS at the undergraduate level. And before you spend time applying, look at the list of “eligible programs” on each grant page.
  • The UCAT has to be taken in Year 12, so start preparing for it then. Once you have a conditional UCAS offer, start applying for grants. Brunel and Hull York merit grants finish at the end of June in the year you start, which is long before the final board results are released.
  • A 5-year study costs between Rs. 1.9 crore and Rs. 4.6 crore, so even partial scholarships of Rs. 3-13 lakh per year are helpful. Apply for all the awards you qualify for at once, stack them on top of each other with university grants, and consider the scholarship stack to be a way to reduce costs, not eliminate them.

Frequently Asked Questions About MBBS Scholarships in UK

  • Can Indian children go to the UK for free MBBS?

Fully funded MBBS scholarships in UK that cover 100% of tuition for international students are extremely rare. Most of the payments are in the form of partial payments, with Rs. 3–13 lakh paid per year for Rs. 38–91 lakh in fees per year. Indian students should actually try to get a partial scholarship, a university bursary, and a structured education loan all at once. That way, they can reduce their out-of-pocket cost each year rather than getting rid of it altogether.

  • Will the MBBS be covered under the Chevening Scholarship?

Chevening does not fund college MBBS degrees. It only funds one-year-long teaching master's degrees. Indian applicants are required to have a bachelor’s degree and have worked for at least two years before they can apply. If you are planning to do your postgraduate medical training in the UK after getting your MBBS from India, then the Chevening scheme is a good choice.

  • What UCAT score do I need for a medical school grant in the UK?

Most merit-based medical school grants in the UK will require you to achieve a minimum UCAT score of 2700 with a band 1 or 2 on the Situational Judgement Test (SJT). But every school has its own scholarship rules. For instance, some give more weight to the personal statement and interview than the UCAT score alone. See the pages for each scholarship for proven minimums.

  • I would like to apply for MBBS grants in the UK. Do I have to be NEET?

Getting into UK medical schools or being eligible for a grant does not mean you have to be a NEET. The National Medical Commission, however, wants Indian students who get their degrees in the UK to have the NEET qualification to practice medicine in India. Keep your valid NEET scorecard wherever you study.

  • I have an offer from UCAS. Can I apply for a grant?

For most grants that are university-specific, yes, an offer is needed, but it is not a problem. Before your grant application can be considered, you need to have at least a conditional offer from Hull, York, Brunel, or most university bursary programs. Apply when you get the offer, not when it is guaranteed.

  • I was rejected from the scholarship. What should I do?

Seek the next source of funding available, such as university hardship bursaries, departmental awards, or scholarships from outside Indian groups like the JN Tata Endowment or the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation. Also, check if your school has a deferred payment option for international students. This lets you pay your tuition over time, not all at once.

  • Best UK medical school for Indian students in terms of money?

According to publicly available information, for undergraduate MBBS scholarships for the year 2026-27, Hull York Medical School and Brunel University London are the best choices for foreign students. If you want to go to college, a half grant at a higher-fee school may not be as good as a cheaper one at Leicester. It’s not just grants and loans that will help you decide what to do. You and your family should also take into account how much money you have and what your grades are.

  • If you have a scholarship, here's how to prove you have enough money for a UK student visa.

Secure a formal scholarship award letter from your school indicating the amount and length of the award. This shows the UKVI that the fees have been reduced. Then you need to have the extra money for education and living expenses (£1,529 in London and £1,171 outside of London) in your bank account for 28 days in a row before you apply for the visa. The bank account and scholarship letter are both required. They are not interchangeable.
