How Many Intakes in Australia Are There in 2027-28?
There are three intakes in Australia, and the Australian academic year runs February to November, which is the reverse of the Indian and Northern Hemisphere calendar.
| Intake | Also called | Classes begin | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| February 2027 | Semester 1 | Mid to late February 2027, some courses early March | Primary. Almost every program open |
| July 2027 | Semester 2 | Early July to early August 2027, varies by university | Secondary. Fewer programs, strong in IT, business, science |
| November 2027 | Semester 3 / Trimester 3 | Late October to November 2027 | Limited. Mostly VET, diplomas, pathway courses |

Two structural points that catch first-time applicants:
- "Semester 2" is not one date. The University of Melbourne starts Semester 2 in July. The University of Sydney starts in August. Booking flights before your own university's date is published is a common and expensive error.
- Not every university uses semesters. UNSW Sydney runs three terms (T1, T2, T3), and it is moving to a new flex-semester calendar from 2028, which will change intake naming for students starting after 2027.
Counselor insight: The November intake is not a soft version of February. Across the Go8, it is largely absent, and where a November start exists it is usually attached to a pathway provider rather than the university itself. Of the three intakes in Australia, only February gives you access to the complete course catalogue at every Group of Eight institution.
If you are still deciding on the country itself before the intake, start with the wider picture of studying in Australia as an Indian student.
Intakes in Australia 2027-28: The Deadlines Universities Actually Publish
Most articles on intakes in Australia print a tidy eight-row Go8 deadline table. That table does not exist. Some universities publish one institution-wide closing date. Others publish only faculty or course-level dates, and their admissions pages say so explicitly.
Verified institution-wide dates for 2027
| University | Intake | Published closing date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Melbourne (UG, international, direct) | Semester 1 2027 | 30 November 2026 | study.unimelb.edu.au |
| University of Melbourne (UG, international, direct) | Semester 2 2027 | 31 May 2027 | study.unimelb.edu.au |
| UNSW Sydney (UG, grouped offer rounds) | Term 1 2027 | Round deadlines 14 May, 16 July, 20 August and 24 September 2026 | unsw.edu.au |
| UNSW Sydney (PG coursework) | Term 1 2027 | Rolling rounds through to 15 October 2026 for offshore applicants | unsw.edu.au |
| UNSW Sydney (PG coursework) | Term 2 and Term 3 2027 | Rounds already open, from 2 July 2026 onward | unsw.edu.au |
The India-specific cutoff nobody publishes
UNSW states that for a citizen of India residing in India, the last postgraduate offer round for Term 1 2027 is 19 November 2026. Working backwards through its published schedule, that offer round draws from applications completed by 24 September 2026. Indian applicants therefore lose roughly three weeks of runway compared with the general pool.
Universities that publish course-level dates only
- Monash University: application dates vary by faculty and generally open in early August. Monash directs applicants to confirm closing dates with the individual faculty.
- University of Sydney: its international students page gives a general guide of "a specific day in January" for Semester 1 and mid-June for Semester 2, with course-specific dates on its key dates calendar. Dates for 2027 are being published progressively.
- ANU, UQ, UWA, Adelaide University: competitive and professional programs run separate, earlier cycles.
Counselor insight: In the 2026 cycle, some UNSW programs exhausted their New Overseas Student Commencement allocation and closed to new applications mid-year. A published closing date is a deadline, not a guarantee of availability. Two of the three real reasons Indian students miss intakes in Australia are a capacity closure and an expired offer, not a missed deadline.
Shortlisting is easier when you can filter by first-year fees. Use the list of universities and colleges in Australia to compare ranking and cost before you fix an intake.
Which Intakes in Australia Suit Your Result Timeline?
Pick the intake that matches when your documents will actually exist, not the one that sounds soonest.
If you are a final-year BTech or BSc student graduating in May 2027 Target July 2027. Your final consolidated marksheet and provisional certificate will not be in hand before June or July, which makes a February 2027 application impossible and a February 2028 application a nine-month wait. Apply on a conditional offer now and submit finals when released.
If you are appearing for CBSE or ISC Class 12 in February and March 2027 Target February 2028 for a direct undergraduate entry. One useful exception: UNSW accepts Indian CBSE predicted grades for a full offer, provided the predicted aggregate is two points above the standard requirement, the letter is on school letterhead with the principal's stamp, and it is dated after 1 May for a Term 1 intake.
If you have completed your degree and your family's funds are documented by August 2026 February 2027 is live right now. This is the strongest position of the four, because you can still enter a September or October 2026 offer round with a complete file.
If you have already missed the Go8 rounds for February 2027 Do not force it. Compare a July 2027 seat at a well-ranked non-Go8 university against February 2028 at a Go8. A July start still gives you the same degree, the same post-study work rights and roughly a seven-month head start on earnings.
Counselor insight: Students rarely lose a year to a missed deadline. They lose it to document sequencing. Under Evidence Level 3, a sponsor's income tax returns for two to three assessment years plus reconciled salary slips take four to six weeks to assemble in India. Students who begin that file only after the offer arrives routinely miss the visa window for the intake they were admitted to.

February vs July vs November Intakes in Australia: An Honest Comparison
| Factor | February 2027 (Sem 1) | July 2027 (Sem 2) | November 2027 (Sem 3) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Course availability | Nearly all UG and PG programs | Reduced. Strong in IT, business, science, engineering | Very limited |
| Go8 availability | All eight universities | All eight, fewer programs | Largely unavailable |
| Scholarship access | Highest. Budgets reset at academic year start | Residual pool only | Minimal |
| Competition | Highest volume | Lower volume, fewer seats | Low volume, few seats |
| Graduate hiring alignment | Finish in November, matches main recruitment cycle | Finish mid-year, off-cycle | Off-cycle |
| Typical application window | September to December 2026 | January to May 2027 | June to September 2027 |
| Best for | Widest choice and scholarships | May or June 2027 graduates, English retakes | Pathway and diploma entry |
Is the July intake easier to get into?
No, and this is the most persistent myth about intakes in Australia. Entry requirements are identical across intakes. Application volume is lower in July, but so is the number of seats, so per-seat competition does not automatically soften. What genuinely improves in July is your own file quality, because you have four extra months.
Courses that almost never open in November
- Medicine
- Dentistry
- Clinical Psychology
- Law (Juris Doctor and senior specialisations)
- Research masters and PhDs with a single annual start date
Counselor insight: February's real advantage is financial, not academic. University scholarship budgets reset at the start of the academic year, so a July applicant with identical marks competes for whatever is left. Across most Australian universities, scholarship deadlines also close four to eight weeks before the course deadline, which means applying on the course deadline makes you structurally ineligible for the money.

Documents Checklist for 2027 Intakes in Australia Under Evidence Level 3
On 8 January 2026, the Department of Home Affairs moved India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan from Evidence Level 2 to Evidence Level 3 under the Simplified Student Visa Framework, as reported by Gulf News.
Two clarifications matter more than the label:
- Evidence Level governs how much documentation you attach at lodgement, not whether your visa is approved.
- Evidence Level is separate from processing priority, and the change was not applied retrospectively.
| Document | Why it is needed | India-specific detail | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate | Academic eligibility | Board reissues and duplicates take longer than school copies | 2 to 4 weeks if reissue needed |
| Degree transcripts and consolidated marksheet | PG eligibility | Many Indian universities issue consolidated marksheets only after convocation | 3 to 8 weeks |
| Provisional certificate | Accepted where final degree certificate is pending | Request in writing from the examination section | 1 to 3 weeks |
| English test result | Visa and admission | Must be valid at lodgement, not just at application | Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead |
| Sponsor bank statements | Financial capacity | 3 to 6 months of verified statements. Digital statements preferred over scans | 1 week |
| Sponsor income tax returns | Source of funds | Last 2 to 3 assessment years | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Salary slips or business income proof | Reconciliation | Must reconcile with the income declared in the ITR | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Education loan sanction letter | Financial capacity | Sanction letter, not an in-principle approval email | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Genuine Student (GS) response | Visa requirement | Structured questions inside ImmiAccount, replaced the old GTE statement | Draft over 2 weeks |
| Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) | Mandatory to lodge | Issued only after you accept and pay the deposit | 3 to 10 days after payment |
| OSHC policy | Visa condition | Must cover the entire visa duration | Same day |
| Passport | Identity | Minimum validity should cover the full course | 2 to 6 weeks if renewal needed |
Counselor insight: The single most common Evidence Level 3 problem is not a missing document. It is a mismatch. If your sponsor's ITR declares Rs.18 lakh and the salary slips do not add up to that figure, the file reads as inconsistent regardless of how much money is in the account. Reconcile ITR to payslips before you upload anything.
Meeting the score bar is the other half of this. Check the current IELTS score requirements for Australia or the PTE score required for Australian universities, and see which institutions accept each test in the guide to PTE accepted universities in Australia.
Month-by-Month Calendar for the February 2027 Intake in Australia
| When | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| August 2026 | Application rounds open across most universities | Shortlist 6 to 8 courses. Book IELTS or PTE. Ask your sponsor to start the ITR and bank-statement file |
| September 2026 | UNSW PG round for India-resident applicants closes 24 September | Submit complete applications. Incomplete files are denied, not held |
| October 2026 | Scholarship deadlines close ahead of course deadlines | Submit separate scholarship applications. Allow for Diwali-period bank and notary delays |
| November 2026 | Melbourne UG closes 30 November. UNSW final India PG offer round 19 November | Accept your best offer. Full offers at UNSW expire in 21 days |
| December 2026 | Pay deposit, receive CoE | Lodge Subclass 500 immediately. Australian university offices close late December |
| January 2027 | Biometrics, medicals, OSHC | Complete health checks with a panel physician. Arrange accommodation |
| February 2027 | Classes begin mid to late February | Arrive at least 10 days before orientation |
Three Indian-calendar frictions worth planning around:
- Board and university result delays in May and June push conditional offers, not final ones.
- Diwali falls in the October to November window when notarised and bank-attested documents are needed most.
- Australian summer closure from late December to mid-January slows CoE issuance and admissions replies.
Counselor insight: Home Affairs sets your visa fee by the date it receives your application, not the date you start preparing it. The Subclass 500 charge rose 25 per cent on 1 July 2026. Anyone who lodged on 30 June 2026 paid Rs.1,34,000 (AUD 2,000). Anyone who lodged on 2 July paid Rs.1,67,500 (AUD 2,500) for the same application.
What the 2027 Intakes in Australia Cost, and How Long the Visa Takes

| Return airfare evidence | About Rs.1,34,000 (AUD 2,000) | Indicative |
| University application fee | Rs.10,050 to Rs.10,318 (AUD 150 to 154) | Varies. Some universities waive it |
Exchange rate used: Rs.67.00 per AUD. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.
Fee changes are confirmed in the Australian Government's 3 July 2026 international education announcement. Verify the current charge on the Department of Home Affairs Subclass 500 page before you lodge.
Indicative tuition
Per the Australian Government's living and education costs guidance, indicative annual tuition sits at Rs.13.4 lakh to Rs.30.2 lakh (AUD 20,000 to 45,000) for a bachelor's degree and Rs.14.7 lakh to Rs.33.5 lakh (AUD 22,000 to 50,000) for a master's. Go8 and professional programs sit at or above the top of those bands.
What actually decides your visa speed
- Ministerial Direction 115, in effect since 14 November 2025, allocates processing priority by how closely each education provider manages enrolments against its New Overseas Student Commencement allocation. Study Australia explains the three priority tiers.
- The National Planning Level for 2027 is 295,000, unchanged from 2026, and no active provider receives a lower 2027 allocation than 2026, per the Department of Education.
- Commencements in 2026 are running 8 per cent below the same period in 2025, so the cap is not currently binding at a national level.
- From 2027, the Australian Tertiary Education Commission takes over international student allocations for higher education providers.
Counselor insight: Priority under MD 115 is set by your university, not by you, and it is a legitimate question to ask admissions before paying a deposit. UNSW already warns applicants on its own admissions page to expect longer visa processing and to lodge as soon as the CoE arrives. That warning is the practical signal, not the NPL headline number.
For a full budget, see the breakdown of the cost of studying in Australia and the cost of living in Australia for international students, which covers the gap between the AUD 29,710 visa benchmark and real city spending.
Does the intake affect your job outcome?
It affects timing more than outcome. A February start finishes in November, which lines up with the main Australian graduate recruitment cycle. On outcomes, the Australian Government's 2025 Graduate Outcomes Survey records full-time employment four to six months after completion at 88.3 per cent for postgraduate coursework graduates, 84.0 per cent for postgraduate research and 75.4 per cent for undergraduates. Median salary data by university and study area is published in the same report.
When Intakes in Australia Go Wrong: Missed Deadlines and Delayed Results
You missed the February 2027 closing date Late applications are often accepted subject to availability of places. Melbourne states this openly and warns that a late application may not leave enough time to arrange a visa. Ask admissions two questions: is the program still open, and what is the last CoE date that still allows a visa grant before classes begin.
Your marksheet or provisional certificate is delayed Ask for a conditional offer, then ask about a conditional confirmation of enrollment. The University of Melbourne offers one specifically so students worried about offer and visa timing can progress a visa application while final results are pending. This is the most underused instrument in the Indian application cycle.
Your English score is short UNSW issues conditional offers on English and gives eight weeks (56 days) to meet the condition, either by submitting a new test result or enrolling in its University English Entry Course. Students completing an approved external English program can request an extension. If you need a retake, work backwards from the offer expiry, not from the intake date.
Your program closed at capacity This happened at UNSW in 2026. Options are a comparable program at the same university, the next term, or a different university with remaining allocation. UNSW does not permit program changes on an existing application; you submit a new one.
What is not accepted as a reason to extend an offer
- Waiting on an outcome from another institution
- Waiting for a later offer round
- Not noticing the expiry date
- Only just missing the expiry date
Counselor insight: Offer expiry, not the application deadline, is where most Indian students lose their seat. A UNSW full offer lapses after 21 days, and the university states plainly that missing the deadline means reapplying. Diarise the expiry date the day the offer email arrives.
3 Takeaways on Intakes in Australia
Three things to act on:
- If your documents are ready before September 2026, February 2027 is live now and gives you the widest course access and the largest scholarship pool of the three intakes in Australia.
- If your final results arrive in May or June 2027, target July 2027 on a conditional offer rather than forcing a February application you cannot complete.
- Start your sponsor's Evidence Level 3 financial file the same week you shortlist universities, not the week your offer arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intakes in Australia
Do all Australian universities offer a November intake?
No. The November intake is the smallest of the intakes in Australia and is offered by selected institutions for specific courses, mainly vocational qualifications, diplomas and pathway programs. Medicine, dentistry, clinical psychology, Law and most research degrees do not offer a November start. If your course is professionally regulated, plan for February or July.
What happens if I miss the February 2027 intake deadline?
Late applications are frequently accepted subject to availability of places, but the real constraint is visa time, not admission. Ask the university for the latest CoE date that still allows a visa grant before classes start. If that date has passed, apply for July 2027 rather than a late February start, because arriving after teaching begins can breach your enrolment conditions.
How much money do I need to show for the 2027 intakes in Australia?
The living-cost benchmark is Rs.19,90,570 (AUD 29,710) for one year for a single applicant, plus your first-year tuition as stated on your offer, plus about Rs.1,34,000 (AUD 2,000) for return airfare. Since India moved to Evidence Level 3 on 8 January 2026, you must also show three to six months of verified bank statements, sponsor income tax returns and traceable source of funds.
Is the July 2027 intake in Australia easier to get into?
Entry requirements are identical across intakes. Application volume is lower in July, but the number of available seats is also lower, so competition per seat does not automatically ease. What improves is the quality of your own application, because you gain roughly four extra months for your English score, Statement of Purpose and financial documentation.
Can I apply for intakes in Australia without my final semester results?
Yes, on your most recent available results. UNSW makes postgraduate offers on six or seven of eight completed semesters with a weighted average mark above the advertised level and accepts Indian CBSE predicted grades for full undergraduate offers with a two-point buffer. Melbourne allows applications with interim results and offers a conditional confirmation of enrollment so you can progress your visa while finals are pending.
Which intake in Australia is best for Indian students?
February is best if your documents are ready, because it offers the widest course choice and the largest scholarship pool. July is better if your final results arrive in May or June, if you need an English retake, or if your sponsor's financial file needs more time. The best intake is the one where you can lodge a complete visa application at least three months before classes begin.
What is the last date to apply for the February 2027 intake in Australia?
Most closing dates fall between September and December 2026. The University of Melbourne closes undergraduate international applications on 30 November 2026. UNSW ran Term 1 2027 undergraduate rounds with deadlines of 14 May, 16 July, 20 August and 24 September 2026. Competitive and professional programs close earlier, so confirm the date on your specific course page rather than relying on a general table.
How many intakes are there in Australia in 2027?
Three. February 2027 is Semester 1 and the primary intake, carrying nearly every undergraduate and postgraduate program. July 2027 is Semester 2, the secondary intake, with fewer programs but strong options in IT, business and science. November 2027 is Semester 3, a limited intake offered mainly for vocational courses, diplomas and pathway programs at selected institutions.
