Ask five people what PTE score for Australia they need, and you’ll get five different answers, and all five could be right. That’s because four different organizations set four different PTE bars for four different reasons.

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) sets the minimum score for your student visa. Your university sets a separate, usually higher, bar for your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). If your course leads to a regulated profession like nursing or teaching, that profession’s registration body sets its number, and it can ignore your university’s requirement entirely. And if Permanent Residency is the end goal, Australia’s points-tested migration system rewards a completely different scale of PTE performance.

Clearing one bar doesn’t mean you’ve cleared the others. A PTE 58 that gets you admitted to an engineering degree won’t register you as a nurse. A PTE 47 that clears your student visa won’t earn you a single PR point. Treat each one as a separate target from day one.

Counselor Insight: The most common mistake we see from Indian students is preparing to “pass PTE” instead of preparing for a specific number. Decide upfront whether you’re optimizing for the visa minimum, your course’s admission cutoff, or PR points, since the preparation strategy for each is different, especially for Writing and Speaking.

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs requires Competent English for a standard Subclass 500 student visa.

These figures are verified directly against the Migration (English Language Tests and Evidence Exemptions for Subclass 500 (Student) Visas) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/090), Schedule 1, which is the actual legal instrument that sets the Subclass 500 English requirements, effective 7 August 2025.

This 47-overall figure for direct entry is confirmed directly against the Department of Home Affairs’ legislative instrument. Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 remain valid under the old threshold until 6 August 2028. The instrument specifies an overall band score only for each pathway; it does not set a separate per-skill minimum for PTE Academic under Subclass 500.

Mentor Note: If your score falls between 40 and 46, retaking the PTE for 6-8 weeks is usually cheaper and faster than adding an ELICOS course to your package, since ELICOS adds both tuition and time. The visa asks for 47. Most universities want considerably more, and undergraduate cutoffs are usually lower than postgraduate cutoffs at the same institution.

Pro Tip: A university’s website always overrides this table. “Master of Data Science” might accept 58, while “Master of Teaching” at the same institution can demand 75+. Always check your specific course page before booking your test.

If Permanent Residency is your goal, your PTE score for Australia PR eligibility runs through Australia’s points-tested skilled migration system, which recognizes three English levels.

These component scores are verified directly against the Department of Home Affairs’ Competent, Proficient, and Superior English pages for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025.

Counselor Insight: The jump from Proficient to Superior is not evenly spread across skills. Writing (69 to 85) and Speaking (76 to 88) demand the biggest gains, so if you’re chasing the full 20 points, put most of your prep time into these two modules rather than spreading effort equally across all four.

PTE Academic is accepted by the Department of Home Affairs for general skilled migration, covering Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated), and Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional). The minimum requirement for skilled migration eligibility is Competent English (0 points), but in practice, most invitation rounds go to Applicants who claim Proficient or Superior English points face competition for these visas, which are points-based, and having only Competent English rarely results in a competitive Expression of Interest.

If you’re building your EOI, treat your English score as one lever among several (age, occupation, work experience), but it’s usually the fastest one to improve in a fixed timeframe.

Most Indian students plan to work in Australia after graduating, and the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) is usually the first step.

The Validity Trap: Your PTE test must be taken within 1 year of your 485 visa application date, which is tighter than the 2-3 year validity that most other visas allow. If you took the PTE in 2024 for your student visa, that score will likely have expired by the time you graduate and apply for your Post-Study Work Permit. Plan to retake it before finishing your degree if your original score is approaching its expiry.

Some professions in Australia are regulated separately from your university, and their English requirement can be higher than your course’s own admission cutoff.

Nursing has two separate checkpoints, not one. ANMAC’s skills assessment (the earlier step, needed to have your qualification recognized) and AHPRA’s registration (the later step, needed to actually practice) each set their own PTE bar, and the two numbers are close but not identical. Meeting one does not automatically mean you’ve met the other.

Counselor Insight: Even if a university’s admission portal accepts a lower score for your nursing or teaching course, do not take that offer at face value. Your university’s cutoff, ANMAC’s skills assessment, and AHPRA’s registration standard are three separate bars, and clearing the first doesn’t clear the other two. If you’re booking your PTE Academic test in India, the fee is Rs. 18,900 (inclusive of 18% GST). If you book directly through a test centre in Australia, the fee is approximately AUD 490 (roughly Rs. 33,320 at Rs. 68 per AUD, current as of this article; confirm the live rate before you pay). Retakes cost the full fee again, so it’s worth spending an extra 2-3 weeks on preparation rather than booking a retake on a guess.

If your score misses your target, don’t panic-book a retake immediately.

• A focused 6-8 week retake plan that targets your weakest skill is usually enough if you’re 1-4 points short of your visa minimum.
• If you’re short of your university’s admission cutoff but clear the visa minimum, check whether your specific course accepts a pathway program or ELICOS bridge before assuming you need to retake.
• If you’re short of Proficient or Superior English for PR points: this is a longer-term prep goal (often 2-3 months), since Writing and Speaking gains take longer to build than Reading and Listening gains.
• If you’re applying for a regulated profession (nursing, teaching): confirm the regulator’s own score first, since it may be higher than either your visa or university requirement.
