Erasmus Scholarship 2027-28: Eligibility, Amount, Deadlines and How Indian Students Can Apply

The Erasmus Scholarship, officially the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) scholarship, is a fully funded European Union award for a two-year joint Master’s degree at two or more universities in Europe. It is administered by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) under the Erasmus+ program.

The scholarship attaches to a specific joint Master’s program, not to a general fund. You choose a program from the official catalog and apply directly to that program’s consortium; the admission and funding decisions are made together.

The catalog spans nearly every academic field: engineering and data science, business and economics, environmental and climate studies, social sciences and international relations, health and public health, law and human rights, and arts, design, and linguistics. Each joint Master’s has its own specialization, so two programs with similar titles can differ significantly in curriculum and the specific universities involved.

The European Commission’s own Graduate Impact Survey, commissioned by EACEA and run through the Erasmus Mundus Association, tracks how alumni fare after graduation. Its most recent edition put overall graduate satisfaction with the program at 4.3 out of 5, based on responses from multiple graduating cohorts. That is a genuine outcomes data point, not a marketing claim from a scholarship consultancy.

No official acceptance rate is published, but scholarship advisory sources commonly cite 2 to 5 percent for popular programs. India has consistently ranked among the top recipient nations: 146 Indian students received Erasmus Mundus scholarships in 2024 out of 2,603 recipients from 137 countries, and India remains the largest single-country beneficiary since the program opened to non-EU students in 2004.

Many consortia also cap how many scholarships go to applicants of any one nationality, commonly around 10 percent of that program’s seats, to keep the cohort geographically balanced. This is set program by program rather than as one EU-wide rule, so a strong application still matters more than which country you’re applying from.

Some consortia pay the full EUR 1,400 a month with no separate travel grant; others offer advance payments toward travel and installation costs, which lowers the monthly amount to around EUR 1,275 for the rest of the course. Check your specific program’s terms.

Selection committees typically evaluate applicants on academic transcripts and class of degree; how relevant your prior study or work experience is to the specific joint Master’s, the quality and specificity of your Statement of Purpose; the strength of your academic or professional references; and your English proficiency score. The motivation letter carries more weight in this mix than most Indian applicants expect.

1. Search the Erasmus Mundus Catalogue by field of study and country.
2. Shortlist up to three programs. Erasmus+ caps applications at three per intake.
3. Read each program’s own website closely. Deadlines and document requirements differ by consortium.
4. Rewrite your Statement of Purpose for each application. Generic letters are the most common reason strong applicants are rejected.
5. Apply directly through the program portal. There is no central application form.
6. Attend an interview if shortlisted.
7. Wait for combined admission and scholarship results, typically April to June for a September start.

Final-year student graduating May/June 2027: apply now with a provisional certificate. Most consortia will accept this application if you confirm your final degree before the program starts.

2 to 3 years of work experience, considering a career pivot: lead your Statement of Purpose with your professional reasoning, not just academic interests.

IELTS score below the required band, or no test yet: Check if your shortlisted programs accept Duolingo first; otherwise, book IELTS 8 to 10 weeks before your earliest deadline.

Missed a deadline? Most consortia run the same call again the following year. Set reminders three months ahead this time.

IELTS score came in below the required band? Some programs offer conditional admission with a retake required before enrollment. Email the admissions office directly and ask rather than assuming rejection.

Admitted but not awarded funding? Ask the program about self-funded enrollment with a later reapplication, and look at an education loan for study abroad as a bridge.

Results delayed past your visa timeline? Contact the consortium directly. Delays of two to four weeks are common and don’t indicate rejection.
