Is there a specific format required for letters of recommendation?
There is no universal format for letters of recommendation (LORs), but most universities expect a formal letter on official letterhead, if possible. Key elements should include:
- Recommender’s details: Name, position, and contact information
- Relationship: How the recommender knows you, and for how long
- Assessment: Your strengths, skills, and suitability for the program, with specific examples
- Clear endorsement: A direct recommendation for your admission
German universities often require LORs on official letterhead, signed, and written in English or German. Singaporean universities may ask for 2-3 LORs, mainly from professors, following a similar formal structure.
Requirements can vary by university, so review each institution’s guidelines. If you need help ensuring your LORs meet these standards, your LeapScholar counsellor can assist.
