Exchange rate used throughout: £1 = Rs.127.73 (June 2026). Verify the current rate at xe.com or RBI before finalizing any financial planning or visa documentation.

Counselor insight: Most families budget only for the Year 1 fee. At Manchester and Leicester, the clinical-year fee (from Year 3 onwards) jumps by £10,000–£20,000 per year. Build that into your budget before you apply, not after you receive an offer.

Visa fee source: UK Home Office, April 8 2026 update. IHS rate: £776/year (confirmed unchanged, Fragomen April 2026 briefing).

Counselor insight: The IHS lump sum is the most consistently missed pre-departure cost. For a 5-year MBBS, you pay Rs.4,95,593 in one transaction as part of your student visa application. There is no installment option. Families who have not factored this amount into their liquid funds have had to delay departure.

Living Costs During MBBS in UK: City-by-City Breakdown for Indian Students

The cost of studying medicine in UK for Indian students is not just tuition. Living costs are the second-largest expense and vary sharply by city.

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) maintenance requirement for 2026 is as follows:

  • London: £1,529/month (Rs. 1.95 lakh)
  • Outside London: £1,171/month (Rs. 1.50 Lakh)

These are minimums for the visa. Realistic monthly costs for an Indian student in 2026 are higher.

Monthly cost breakdown (non-London, shared accommodation):

  • Accommodation (shared): £400-600/month
  • Food and groceries: £200-300/month
  • Transport: £60-100/month
  • Utilities and phone: £50-80/month
  • Miscellaneous: £100-150/month

Counselor insight: Leicester has one of the largest Indian communities in the UK. Students in Leicester routinely encounter Indian grocery stores, temples, and familiar food options within walking distance of the university campus. This means lower food costs compared to cities with smaller Indian populations, where imported Indian groceries carry a significant premium.

For a full city-by-city breakdown, see cost of living in UK for Indian students and cost of studying in UK 2026.

5-Year Total Budget: Cost of MBBS in UK for Indian Students

The total cost of MBBS in UK for Indian students depends heavily on which university you attend and which city it is in. Below are three realistic scenarios based on verified 2026-27 fee data.

Scenario A: Budget Route: University of Leicester

Leicester has the lowest international MBBS fees of any GMC-accredited medical school in England.

YearTuition (£)Tuition (Rs.)Living (£/yr)Living (Rs.)Annual Total (Rs.)
Year 1£29,000Rs.37.04 lakh£12,000Rs.15.33 lakhRs.52.37 lakh
Year 2£29,000Rs.37.04 lakh£12,000Rs.15.33 lakhRs.52.37 lakh
Year 3£47,000Rs.60.03 lakh£13,200Rs.16.86 lakhRs.76.89 lakh
Year 4£47,000Rs.60.03 lakh£13,200Rs.16.86 lakhRs.76.89 lakh
Year 5£47,000Rs.60.03 lakh£13,200Rs.16.86 lakhRs.76.89 lakh
5-Year TotalRs.2.54 CroreRs.3.35 crore

Add pre-departure costs (Rs.5.8 lakh) for a realistic total of approximately Rs.3.41 crore.

Scenario B: Mid-Range Route: University of Manchester

YearTuition (£)Tuition (Rs.)Living (£)Living (Rs.)Annual Total (Rs.)
Year 1£39,900Rs.50.96 lakh£14,400Rs.18.39 lakhRs.69.35 lakh
Year 2£39,900Rs.50.96 lakh£14,400Rs.18.39 lakhRs.69.35 lakh
Year 3£58,000Rs.74.08 lakh£15,600Rs.19.93 lakhRs.97.73 lakh
Year 4£58,000Rs.74.08 lakh£15,600Rs.19.93 lakhRs.97.73 lakh
Year 5£58,000Rs.74.08 lakh£15,600Rs.19.93 lakhRs.97.73 lakh
5-Year TotalRs.4.38 crore

Add pre-departure costs (Rs.5.8 lakh) for a realistic total of approximately Rs.4.26 crore.

Scenario C: Elite Route: University of Oxford (6 years)

Note: Oxford and Cambridge represent the highest cost of doing medicine in UK at the undergraduate level.

YearTuition (£)Tuition (Rs.)Living (£)Living (Rs.)Annual Total (Rs.)
Yrs 1-6£49,400/yrRs.63.09 lakh/yr£15,600/yrRs.19.93 lakh/yrRs.83.02 lakh/yr
6-Year TotalRs.4.98 crore

Add pre-departure costs for a realistic total of approximately Rs.5.04 crore.

Counselor insight: The single biggest financial surprise for Indian families is the clinical year fee jump. At Manchester, fees go from £39,900 to £58,000 per year from Year 3: an increase of Rs.27 lakh per year. If the family has budgeted only for Year 1 fees, they will face a serious gap from Year 3 onwards. Always budget the clinical year fees before applying.

Cost of MBBS in UK vs Alternatives: Is It Worth It for Indian Students?

Understanding the cost of medicine degree UK becomes clearer when compared to other popular MBBS destinations for Indian students.

Destination5-Year Tuition (Approx. Rs.)NMC RecognitionGMC Registration OptionFMGE/NExT Required for India PracticeClinical Exposure Quality
UKRs.1.85-4.5 croreYesYesNExT requiredNHS hospitals; very high
RussiaRs.25-45 lakhYes (select universities)NoNExT requiredModerate; clinical varies by city
PhilippinesRs.30-60 lakhYes (WHO-listed)NoNExT requiredGood; English-medium
GeorgiaRs.20-40 lakhYes (select universities)NoNExT requiredModerate
Ukraine (pre-2022 data)Rs.25-50 lakhYesNoNExT requiredModerate

NMC recognition status: Verify from the NMC India approved foreign medical institution list before applying to any institution abroad.

The honest answer: If your goal is to practice medicine in India after graduating, UK is the most expensive route available. Russia, Georgia, or the Philippines will cost significantly less and still lead to NExT eligibility. If your goal is a UK NHS career, global specialization training, or GMC registration, the UK is the clearest and most direct path.

Scholarships to Reduce the Cost of MBBS in UK for Indian Students

The cost of MBBS in UK for international students is rarely reduced by scholarships. Here is what genuinely exists and what does not.

What does NOT apply to MBBS:

  • Chevening Scholarships: for one-year postgraduate programs only; not applicable to MBBS
  • GREAT Scholarships: postgraduate only; not applicable to MBBS undergraduates
  • Most UK government scholarship programs are designed for master's or research degrees

What does exist for MBBS undergraduates:

ScholarshipUniversityAmountKey Requirement
International Fee Waiver (2026-27)University of LeicesterFull tuition waiver (30 places)Grades significantly above standard offer; deadline 30 June 2026
International Undergraduate ScholarshipUniversity of Leicester£3,000-£10,000Merit-based; check eligibility on official page
Think Big ScholarshipUniversity of BristolPartial fee supportRequires UCAS application first
Edinburgh Global ScholarshipsUniversity of EdinburghPartialCheck medicine eligibility on official page
UCL Medical School BursaryUCLUp to £7,000/yearFinancial need: check eligibility

Counselor insight: Most MBBS-specific scholarship applications open 6-9 months before the course starts, often before you even receive your offer. Start the scholarship search 12 months before your intended entry, not after. Also: some universities (like Leicester) automatically assess scholarship eligibility from your UCAS application. Others require a separate form. Check the individual scholarship page for each university you apply to.

UCAT, NEET, and UKMLA: What the Cost of MBBS in UK Means After Graduation

Understanding the cost of studying medicine in UK requires knowing what qualifications and exams follow graduation.

UCAT: University Clinical Aptitude Test

All UK medical schools now require the UCAT (previously called UKCAT). The BMAT has been discontinued as of 2024. Key facts for Indian students:

  • Indian students take the UCAT at Pearson VUE centres in India (available in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata)
  • Fee for international test-takers: £115 (Rs.14,689): paid at the time of booking
  • 2026 test window: 13 July 2026 to 24 September 2026
  • Registration opens: 20 May 2026
  • You can only sit the UCAT once per year; multiple sittings are treated as misconduct

NEET-UG: Is It Required?

  • UK admission: NEET is NOT required for applying to UK medical schools
  • Practicing in India after UK MBBS: NEET-UG qualifying score is mandatory under NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Regulations 2021. Without a valid qualifying NEET score, you cannot appear for NExT and cannot practice medicine in India
  • This means you need to have cleared NEET-UG before joining a UK medical university if you intend to return to India

For a detailed breakdown, see MBBS without NEET abroad.

UKMLA: UK Medical Licensing Assessment

From the 2024-25 academic year, all final-year UK medical students must pass the UKMLA to graduate and practice. This exam replaced the previous licensing structure. Indian students graduating from UK MBBS programs must pass the UKMLA to receive GMC registration. This is separate from India's NExT exam.

Counselor insight: A common misunderstanding among Indian families is that a UK MBBS degree automatically exempts graduates from FMGE or NExT in India. That exemption no longer applies under NMC's updated 2021 regulations. A UK-qualified doctor returning to India must still clear NExT. Budget for NExT coaching costs (Rs.1-3 lakh) separately if returning to India is the plan.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong with Your MBBS in UK Application

Missed the UCAS October 15 Deadline

The medicine UCAS deadline of 15 October is absolute. Unlike other courses, medicine at all UK universities has zero flexibility on this date. If you miss it, your options are:

  • Apply the following year. Prepare more thoroughly, especially for UCAT
  • Consider a gap year with work experience to strengthen your application
  • There is no late application route for medicine at any GMC-accredited UK medical school

Visa Rejected

A UK Student Visa rejection for Indian MBBS applicants typically occurs due to:

  • Insufficient funds (28-day bank statement rule not met: funds must cover tuition + maintenance for the full course)
  • CAS errors or mismatched personal details
  • Missing TB certificate from a UKVI-approved Indian clinic
  • Incomplete or incorrect financial documents

What to do: A visa rejection is not a permanent ban. Address the specific reason stated in the refusal letter and reapply. However, this delays your entry by at least 6 months to one year. Reconsideration costs both money and an academic year.

UCAT Score Below University Threshold

If your UCAT score is below what your target universities require:

  • You can resit the UCAT in the following year. There is no penalty for retaking in a subsequent year (only one sit allowed per year)
  • Use the gap year for additional work experience (clinical shadowing, volunteering)
  • Some universities (e.g., St. George's) have relatively lower UCAT thresholds and may remain accessible

28-Day Rule Fails at Visa Stage

If the student's (or parent's) bank account does not show the required maintenance funds held continuously for 28 days before the visa application date, the visa will be refused. The funds required are: tuition fee for Year 1 plus £13,761 (London) or £10,539 (outside London) in maintenance funds, held for 28 consecutive days. All amounts are verified from one account. This is non-negotiable.

Source: UKCISA

Counselor insight: Families sometimes move money into an account a few days before applying for the visa, thinking that is sufficient. The 28-day requirement is strict and counted from the date the visa application is submitted. Start consolidating funds into one account at least five weeks before you plan to submit the visa application.

Cost of PG in UK After MBBS: What to Plan For

Indian students often ask about the cost of PG in UK after MBBS. After completing your UK MBBS and passing the UKMLA, you are eligible for foundation program training (2 years, paid; starting salary currently starting at approximately £32,000/year or Rs.40.9 lakh/year gross).

For specialist postgraduate medical qualifications (MRCP, MRCS, MRCOG), additional examination fees apply: typically £1,000-3,000 per exam attempt (Rs.1.28-3.83 lakh). These are competitive clinical exams taken after foundation training.

Postgraduate taught programs (MSc, MRes) in clinical medicine cost £20,000-35,000 per year (Rs.25.6-44.7 lakh). The GREAT Scholarship 2026-27 offers £10,000 towards postgraduate tuition for Indian students. This scholarship does apply to one-year postgraduate programs (unlike MBBS).

3 Things to Do Before You Apply for MBBS in UK

  1. Lock in your 5-year INR budget before you apply, not after. Use the scenario tables in this article. Include clinical-year fee jumps, IHS lump sum, and one annual currency movement buffer of 5%. If the total number is beyond realistic reach, evaluate Leicester specifically. Or compare with the best-value alternatives in Russia or Georgia.
  2. Get your TB test done at a UKVI-approved clinic in India and start the IHS calculation early. These two are the most commonly missed pre-departure steps. The TB test takes time to schedule, and the IHS must be paid in full at the visa application stage. Neither can be done at the last minute.
  3. Confirm your NEET-UG qualifying score before you enroll. If you plan to return to India and practice medicine after your UK degree, a valid NEET-UG score is a legal requirement under NMC regulations. Your UK university will not ask for it at admission. NMC will ask for it when you apply for Indian registration.

Frequently Asked Questions: Cost of MBBS in UK for Indian Students

  • 1. What is the total cost of MBBS in UK for Indian students in 2026-27?

This is the number every family asks first, and the honest answer is it depends on which university you choose. The total cost of MBBS in UK for Indian students lands somewhere between Rs.3.4 crore (Leicester, all-in over 5 years) and Rs.5 crore+ (Cambridge or Imperial). That figure covers tuition, living, visa, IHS, and pre-departure costs: the full picture, not just Year 1 fees. If you're looking for a quick planning number for the average cost of MBBS in UK, Rs.3.4-4 crore is the realistic middle ground. Tuition alone runs Rs.37-90 lakh a year depending on the university, so the cost of MBBS course in UK varies enormously. If your family is asking how much does it cost to do MBBS in UK right now, start with the 5-year budget tables in this article, not the annual figure alone.

  • 2. Which is the cheapest university in UK for MBBS for Indian students?

Leicester. Pre-clinical years (years 1-2) cost £29,000 (Rs.37 lakh) a year, which is low by UK medical school standards. The catch is that clinical years (years 3-5) jump to £47,000 (Rs.60 lakh) per year. Families who budget only Year 1 fees get a nasty shock in Year 3. Nottingham is a close second at £30,200 (Rs.38.6 lakh) per year. Both are outside London, which cuts your monthly living costs by Rs.30,000-50,000 compared to King's or UCL. If the cheapest MBBS in UK is what you're after, Leicester is where most Indian families start, and many end up.

  • 3. Is NEET required for MBBS in UK?

UK universities don't ask for NEET. You won't find it on their entry requirements page, and it won't affect your UCAS application at all. But here's what confuses many Indian families: if you want to come back and practice medicine in India after your UK degree, NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Regulations 2021 require you to have a valid NEET-UG qualifying score before you even join the foreign university. Skip that, and you can't sit NExT, which means no Indian medical licence. So the short answer is: not required for admission to UK, but mandatory if India is your end goal.

  • 4. What is the Immigration Health Surcharge and why does it catch people off guard?

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is what gives you NHS access while you're studying. At £776 per year for students, it sounds manageable until you realize you pay it for the entire visa duration in one shot when you apply for your visa. For a 5-year MBBS, that's £3,880 (Rs.4.96 lakh) out of your account before you've even landed at Heathrow. There's no split payment, no installment option. This is the cost that often surprises Indian families because it doesn't appear on any university fee page. It's a Home Office charge, separate from tuition entirely.

  • 5. Can Indian students work part-time during MBBS in UK to manage costs?

Technically yes: your Student Visa allows up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during official holidays. Realistically, you can expect to earn around £600-900 a month (Rs. 76,600-1.15 lakh) from part-time work. That's useful for groceries and transport, but it won't touch tuition fees. More importantly, once clinical placements start from Year 3: long hospital days, early starts, evening study. Most students find there's simply no time left. A few manage a weekend shift here and there. Counting on part-time income as a serious budget strategy for MBBS is not realistic.

  • 6. Are there any real scholarships for MBBS students in UK, or is it mostly postgraduate?

Mostly postgraduate, and this needs to be said clearly because many blogs imply otherwise. Chevening? Postgraduate only. GREAT Scholarship? Postgraduate only. The scholarships that actually exist for MBBS undergraduates are university-level and limited in number. Leicester has historically offered international fee waivers; check the official scholarships page for 2026-27 availability and deadlines. These are real, but competitive. Start searching 12 months before your intended entry, not after you receive your offer.

  • 7. How does the cost of MBBS in UK compare to doing MBBS in Russia or Georgia?

There's no gentle way to say this: the cost of studying MBBS in UK is roughly 8-10 times higher than in Russia or Georgia. A full 5-year program in Russia runs Rs.25-45 lakh total. Georgia is similar, around Rs.20-40 lakh. Both routes still require passing NExT to practice in India. So if your family's goal is an Indian medical license, the financial case for UK is hard to make. Where the UK genuinely pulls ahead is for students who want GMC registration, NHS Foundation training, or a career path that leads outside India. That's a different calculation entirely, and for those students the premium can be worth it.

  • 8. What happens if my UK student visa gets rejected after I receive a university offer?

It's more common than families expect, and it doesn't mean you can't continue your studies. The most frequent reasons are the 28-day funds rule not being properly met (money moved into the account too late), a missing TB certificate from a UKVI-approved Indian clinic, or a mismatch in CAS details. A rejection doesn't ban you from reapplying, but it almost certainly costs you an academic year. Your offer may not hold for more than 12 months, and some universities will require a fresh UCAS application. The fix: don't rush the visa application. Get the bank statement sitting for 28 consecutive days before you submit, sort the TB test early, and double-check every detail on your CAS letter against your passport.

  • 9. What is the UKMLA, and do Indian students have to take it too?

Yes. The UK Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA) became compulsory for all final-year UK medical students from 2024 to '25. It's a licensing exam you must pass to graduate and get GMC registration. There's no exemption for international students. What confuses Indian students is that the UKMLA sits entirely separately from India's NExT exam. If you want to practice in the UK, you pass UKMLA. If you want to practice in India, you still have to clear NExT. A UK MBBS no longer gives you an automatic shortcut to an Indian license. That changed with the 2021 NMC regulations.

  • 10. Is the cost of MBBS in UK the same for Pakistani students and other international students?

Yes, the fees are identical. UK universities set a single international student rate regardless of which country you're from. The cost of MBBS in UK for Pakistani students, Nigerian students, Bangladeshi students, or anyone outside the EU/UK is the same as for Indian students. The visa process, IHS, and 28-day funds requirement are also the same. Where things might differ slightly is scholarship. Eligibility: Some university-level awards are limited to specific nationalities or regions, so it's worth checking the scholarship pages directly rather than assuming you qualify or don't.
