dMAT Exam 2026: Key Highlights

  • dMAT is mandatory from Summer Semester 2027 for Engineering, Commerce, Finance, Economics, Business, and Management graduates applying for German Master’s programs.
  • Registration opened on June 29 and closes on September 15, 2026.
  • The exam fee is Rs.16,300 (โ‚ฌ150), payable directly to G.A.S.T., separate from the APS India fee.
  • The exam consists of two 90-minute modules: a Core Module and a Subject Module.
  • dMAT scores range from 0-200, and the certificate has no expiry date.
  • Confirmed test centres are available across 10 Indian cities, including Delhi and Bengaluru.

What Is the dMAT (Digital Master Test) and Why Does APS India Require It?

dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a standardized aptitude test run by G.A.S.T. e.V., the organization behind TestDaF and TestAS. APS India made it mandatory for select Indian graduates applying to Germany from Summer Semester 2027.

dMAT does not replace APS India document verification it’s an additional requirement. You will need to complete APS verification and pay its fee separately. German universities added this requirement because grading norms vary widely across Indian institutions; dMAT gives them a standardized data point alongside your transcripts, similar to how TestAS works for undergraduate admissions.

Exemptions

  1. APS online registration completed before June 29, 2026, is grandfathered; no dMAT needed this cycle.
  2. Physical documents submitted to APS India Delhi before June 29, 2026, are exempt, regardless of certificate issue date.
  3. Winter 2026/27 semester applicants are unaffected; dMAT applies only from Summer 2027 onwards.

Counselor insight: The cutoff is the submission date, not the certificate issue date. Documents submitted June 27 with a certificate issued in July still qualify for exemption.

dMAT Score Explained

  • Range: 0-200; average benchmark is 100. The certificate shows the score and global percentile.
  • Validity: Indefinite, no expiry.
  • University use: Each German university sets its weight for the score. It doesn't replace CGPA thresholds or language requirements.
  • Recognition check: Verify your target university via the Anabin Database.
  • Score cutoffs aren't published yet since this group is the first cohort (results October 12). Targeting a score of 120-140/200 is a reasonable prep goal.

Counselor insight: Don't wait for benchmarks to apply; submit your application with your dMAT score as soon as you have it.

How to Prepare for the dMAT Exam: 8-Week Study Plan

Start with official sample questions and the Latin Squares practice module on the G.A.S.T. dMAT Preparation Page.

  • Figure Sequences: Daily non-verbal reasoning/matrix puzzle practice (20 min/day)
  • Mathematical Equations: Algebraic/number-series logic, not calculus
  • Latin Squares: Logic-grid elimination practice (15 min/day from Week 1; this format is unfamiliar to most Indian test-takers and rewards specific practice)
  • Subject Module: Revisit core degree concepts analytically, not formula memorization
WeeksFocus
1-2Untimed run of each Core subtest; identify weak areas
3-5Timed daily Core practice (30 min, rotating subtests)
6-7Subject Module analytical review
8Full-time mock (3.5 hrs); confirm logistics

Do You Need to Take the dMAT? Quick Decision Scenarios

  • B.Tech/BE graduate targeting RWTH Aachen or TU Munich, Summer 2027: Mandatory. Register by Sept 15 and select your engineering subject module.
  • B.Com/BBA/MBA targeting MSc Management, MSc Finance, or MBA in Germany: Mandatory. Select Business, Commerce & Finance; prioritize Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares in prep.
  • Already submitted APS documents before June 29, 2026: Exemptions don't pay the dMAT fee.
  • Unclear degree field (B.Sc. Statistics, dual-major, integrated MBA): Email APS India for written confirmation first. The fee isn't reversible.

Common dMAT Registration & Exam Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Registering late September slots in metro cities fills up fast. Register in July.
  2. Assuming dMAT is bundled with the APS fee: it's not; budget Rs.34,300 across two separate portals.
  3. Believing dMAT replaces TestDaF/IELTS, it tests only aptitude. Language proficiency remains a separate requirement.

3 Key Takeaways

  1. If you're an Engineering, Commerce, Economics, or Business graduate targeting Summer Semester 2027 in Germany, register on the APS India dMAT portal now the September 15 deadline is live.
  2. Budget Rs.34,300 as two separate payments: Rs.16,300 to G.A.S.T., Rs.18,000 to APS India.
  3. Download official sample questions this week and run a timed mock Latin Squares and Figure Sequences, which are unlike anything in Indian board exams, JEE, CAT, or UPSC.

Frequently Asked Questions About the dMAT Exam

Q1. Is the dMAT mandatory for all Indian students applying to Germany?

Ans. The dMAT exam is mandatory for Indian graduates in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or Management who are applying to German Masters programs from Summer Semester 2027 onward. Students applying for a Bachelor's degree, PhD, exchange program, or Winter Semester 2026/27 are not required to take dMAT. Students who completed APS India online registration or submitted physical documents to the APS Delhi office before June 29, 2026, are also exempt from this requirement.

Q2. What happens if I miss the dMAT registration deadline on September 15?

Ans. Missing the September 15, 2026 registration deadline means you cannot sit the September 26, 2026 exam. If no additional dMAT sittings are announced for the 2026/27 cycle, this would delay your eligible German master's entry. There is no confirmed makeup date or second sitting for 2026. The only reliable course is to register before September 15 and monitor APS India and G.A.S.T. official communications for any subsequent announcements.

Q3. Can I take the dMAT exam in German instead of English?

Ans. The dMAT exam is available in both English and German. You choose your preferred language at registration. Most Indian applicants select English unless they have completed formal German language training at B2 level or above. The Core Module is designed to be language-independent, so both choices work for that portion. For the Subject Module, choose the language in which you are most comfortable with technical and analytical terminology from your degree field.

Q4. Is a high dMAT score required for admission to German universities?

Ans. Since dMAT is a new exam with its first cohort sitting in September 2026, university-specific score cutoffs have not been published. Each German university sets its weight for the dMAT result in its admissions process. A score above the mean of 100 is expected to strengthen your profile, but the dMAT does not override other entry requirements such as minimum CGPA or language proficiency thresholds. Reliable benchmarks will emerge after October 2026 results are released and universities begin signaling preferences publicly.

Q5. Does the dMAT certificate expire?

Ans. The dMAT certificate has no expiration date. A certificate received after the October 12, 2026 results release remains valid indefinitely for all future German university applications. You do not need to retake the dMAT for subsequent application cycles unless APS India introduces revised requirements, which would be communicated through official channels.

Q6. Is the dMAT registration fee refundable?

Ans. Yes, but only if you cancel within 14 days of your online registration. Because the โ‚ฌ150 dMAT fee is managed by the German organization g.a.s.t., you have a legal right to a full refund within this two-week consumer cancellation window by emailing your request to kontakt@gast.de. After 14 days, you cannot get a refund for the fee except in rare, documented emergencies. Please note that the dMAT fee is entirely separate from the โ‚น18,000 APS India verification fee, which cannot be refunded under any circumstances.

Q7. Do I need to take the dMAT if I already hold a valid APS certificate?

Ans. If your APS India certificate was issued before June 29, 2026, you are fully exempt from dMAT for this application cycle. If your APS certificate was issued after June 29, 2026, and your degree falls in a mandatory field (Engineering, Commerce, Business, or Economics), the new APS India documentation requirements are likely to apply. Email APS India directly to confirm your specific situation, particularly if your certificate was issued close to the June 29 cutoff date.

Q8. Which subject module should I choose if I hold a dual degree?

Ans. For dual degree holders, base your module selection on the German Masters program you are applying to, not on your undergraduate academic background. A student with both a B.Tech and an MBA applying to an MSc Management program should select Business, Commerce, and Finance. A student with an integrated MBA applying to a Data Science or Engineering Masters should select the module matching that technical field. When your target program straddles two fields, confirm with your target German university's admissions office which module they expect to see on your certificate.

Q9. Can I retake the dMAT exam if I score poorly?

Ans. Yes, you can retake the dMAT exam. The official g.a.s.t. terms do not place a ban or lifetime limit on the number of times you can attempt the test. However, the official test schedule strictly limits your ability to retake it immediately. Because the dMAT is not an on-demand exam and is only administered on specific, predefined dates throughout the year, you will have to wait for the next available national testing window. Additionally, you must pay the full โ‚ฌ150 registration fee for each subsequent attempt.
