Germany Job Seeker Visa 2026: Eligibility, Documents & How to Apply from India

The Opportunity Card is the Germany job seeker visa for Indian professionals applying from India. It gives you 12 months in Germany to find a job without a pre-arranged offer, with permission to work part-time up to 20 hours per week throughout.

There are two ways to qualify. You only need one.

Your foreign degree is fully recognized in Germany. Check your exact university and degree on the Anabin database. The university must carry H+ status, and your degree must be rated. Entspricht or Gleichwertig. If confirmed, you qualify without needing any points.

If your degree is only partially recognized or not yet assessed, you must score at least 6 points from the table below and meet all three baseline requirements.

• Qualification: Completed degree or vocational qualification of at least 2 years’ duration
• Language floor: German A1 or English B2 (CEFR) mandatory gate; does not award points
• Financial proof: €13,092 (Rs.12,17,556) in a blocked account €1,091/month × 12 months (2026 rate))
• Health insurance: Schengen-wide, €30,000+ coverage, valid 12 months

Counselor insight: Most Indian IT and engineering professionals with 5+ years of experience and a B2 English score are 3–4 points from experience alone. Adding German A2 (1 point) or being under 35 (2 points) comfortably clears 6. The most common mistake: checking only the university name on Anabin, not the specific degree. A BTech Computer Science and BTech Computer Engineering from the same university can have different Anabin statuses; search your exact degree before assuming you qualify.

Counselor insight: The two documents that delay Indian applications most are the degree recognition proof and the cover letter. “Exploring opportunities in Germany” is a rejection trigger name for actual companies, roles, and cities. Carry originals plus two complete sets of photocopies.

Processing times are estimates based on typical applicant experience and vary with consulate load, document completeness, and time of year. October to December is peak season, so if your timeline allows, apply earlier.

Counselor insight: Mumbai applicants consistently face the longest waits. If you are in Maharashtra and your timeline is tight, check whether the Chennai consulate has earlier slots; it does not cover Maharashtra applicants, but knowing this gap helps you plan your preparation window accurately. Start your Sperrkonto and document collection the same week you book your appointment, not after.

Go to anabin.kmk.org. Check your exact university and degree (not just institution). If H⁺, you are on the direct route. If your qualification is partial or unlisted, please calculate your points; you will need at least 6.

Book a Goethe-Institut, telc, IELTS, or Cambridge exam. Minimum A1 German or B2 English. Pearson is not accepted at German missions in India. Allow 4–8 weeks for results.

Deposit €13,092 (Rs.12,17,556) in a job-seeker-specific blocked account (Expatrio or Fintiba). Takes 5–10 working days.

Book at india.diplo.de for the consulate covering your home state. Mumbai slots fill 6 to 12 weeks in advance; book immediately.

Use the checklist above. Carry originals + two complete sets of photocopies. Translate and notarize all regional-language documents before your appointment.

Know your specific target companies, cities, and roles. Pay €75 (Rs.6,975) at the consulate.

Register at your Einwohnermeldeamt within 14 days. You may work part-time up to 20 hours/week from day one. Prepare LinkedIn and Xing before you travel.

Counselor insight: The Opportunity Card has no German language requirement beyond the A1/B2 baseline. Most jobs in Germany do. Unless you are targeting multinational tech firms in Berlin or Frankfurt that work entirely in English, plan to reach at least B1 before you arrive. A Goethe-Institut B1 course from India takes 6–8 months of evening preparation and costs Rs.15,000–Rs.25,000 in course fees. Starting German alongside your visa preparation, not after you arrive, is the single most consistent difference between applicants who find a role within 3 months and those who return without one.

Where Indian professionals are finding jobs: Munich and Stuttgart dominate automotive and engineering hiring. Berlin leads in tech startups. Frankfurt is the primary hub for finance. Hamburg has strong demand in logistics and trade.

Counselor insight: Indian IT professionals with 5+ years of experience in Java, Python, SAP, or cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) are among the fastest to receive interview calls in Germany. Most offers in this category come within 8-12 weeks of active applications. Non-IT profiles take longer and almost always need B2 German to clear the first screening round.

Once you receive a job offer, apply at your local Ausländerbehörde (foreigners’ office) immediately; do not wait for your visa to near expiry. You will receive a Fiktionsbescheinigung (legal bridging certificate) the same day, maintaining your right to stay while the permit is processed (4–10 weeks). You may legally start work only once the actual permit is issued.

Key Blue Card benefits: Spouse gets immediate full work rights with no German language test. Permanent residency is possible in 21 months with B1 German. There is no German language requirement at the time of the Blue Card application.

Counselor insight: Be aware of the 2026 thresholds before you start interviewing. Most IT and engineering roles qualify at the lower €45,934 shortage threshold. Negotiate your salary above this threshold during the offer stage; it is far easier then than after signing.

If you completed your degree at a German university and are currently on a §16b student residence permit, the §20 AufenthG Job Seeker Permit is your route, not the Opportunity Card.

Counselor insight: Apply for the §20 permit at least 4–6 weeks before your student permit end date; never wait until expiry. The biggest mistake Indian students in Germany make is assuming the transition is automatic. Book the Ausländerbehörde appointment while you are still on your student permit to avoid any gap in legal status.

1. Know which permit applies to you. Applying from India → Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), 12 months, part-time work allowed. Already studying in Germany → §20 Permit at your Ausländerbehörde, 18 months, apply before your student permit expires.
2. Get your paperwork right before you apply. Verify your exact degree on Anabin (not just your university); fund €13,092 in a job-seeker-specific blocked account; and obtain a valid language certificate, A1 German or B2 English minimum.
3. Prepare your job search before you land. Set up LinkedIn and Xing, write a cover letter naming specific companies and cities, and know the Blue Card salary threshold (€45,934–€50,700) so you can evaluate job offers correctly from day one.
