The IELTS Listening section is a crucial component of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), designed to assess your ability to comprehend spoken English in various contexts. It evaluates how effectively you can follow and understand a range of accents and spoken material typical of everyday encounters.

In this sample, we will explore a typical Programme of Activities for the first day of an event. This exercise will allow you to practice your listening skills and become familiar with common question types encountered in the test. Each question will be followed by detailed answers and explanations to help you understand why a particular answer is correct.

Key Highlights of the Listening Section:

  • The Listening section includes conversations, monologues (e.g., speeches, lectures), and announcements.
  • Question types include multiple-choice, matching, labelling diagrams, completing sentences, and short-answer questions.
  • You listen to each recording once, with time to read questions beforehand and review answers after each section.
  • It tests understanding of various accents like British, American, Australian, and others.
  • Answers are scored for accuracy; total listening time is about 30 minutes, with 10 minutes at the end for transferring answers.
  • It evaluates comprehension of explicit information (facts) and implicit aspects (speaker's attitudes).
