The Three Eligibility Gates you Clear Before TUM Sees your File

Before you meet any of the TU Munich admission requirements, you have to be eligible for German higher education at all. Three gates decide that.

Gate one: the APS certificate. The Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in New Delhi verifies that your Indian academic documents are genuine. Without it, TUM will not process your application and the visa section will not process your file. It has lifetime validity once issued, so you apply once and use it across universities. Gate two: the 70% Class XII rule. APS India published updated evaluation criteria that entered the anabin database on 15 March 2026 and apply to admissions from Winter Semester 2026/27 onward. Indian applicants now need a minimum overall score of 70% of the maximum achievable marks in the Class XII certificate, regardless of board. CBSE, ICSE and every state board are treated identically. The threshold is on your overall marks, not a best-of-five average.

Gate three: your university's anabin status. APS India has confirmed that applicants from private Indian universities without full UGC accreditation cannot be granted access to German universities. Your institution must hold H+ status in anabin. An H+/- or H- listing means no APS certificate is issued, and no APS certificate means no TUM application. Check your institution in anabin before you pay anything.

Counselor insight: Check anabin before you pay the APS fee, not after. The APS fee is non-refundable, and students from newer private universities discover the H- problem only once their file has already been processed and rejected.

The dMAT: the New Test most Master’s Applicants have not heard of

If you are applying for a Master's, one of the TU Munich admission requirements now sits outside TUM entirely. APS India introduced the Digital Master Test (dMAT) on 29 June 2026 as a required element of the APS documentation for selected Master's applicants from India.

You are affected if your previous degree falls in one of three fields:

• Engineering
• Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics
• Business or Management

For these applicants, the dMAT is required for applications relating to the Summer Semester 2027 Master intake and every intake after it. That is the next open TUM Master's window, so this applies to most people reading this now.

Key facts:

• Fee: Rs.16,593 (€150), charged by g.a.s.t., not APS
• First test date: 26 September 2026, with registration closing 15 September 2026
• Certificates available: 12 October 2026
• Test centres in India: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune

Exemptions exist. If you completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, or shipped your complete APS documents before that date, or already hold an APS certificate, you do not need the dMAT for that procedure. Bachelor's applicants, PhD applicants and students on confirmed exchange or double-degree programs are also outside the scope.

Counselor insight: A low dMAT score does not by itself lead to an APS refusal, and APS has said so plainly. A missing dMAT certificate does stop your APS certificate from being issued. Treat it as a document to obtain, not an exam to fear, and register early because test seats are allocated first come, first served.

Bachelor’s Admission Requirements for Indian Students After Class 12

This is where the TU Munich admission requirements disappoint most Class 12 students, so it is worth being direct. An Indian Class XII certificate on its own does not qualify you for direct entry to a TUM Bachelor's program. TUM requires a recognised university entrance qualification, and Indian school-leaving certificates are assessed as subject-restricted rather than general.

APS India sets out two routes:

1. The Studienkolleg route. Class XII with at least 70% plus an APS certificate makes you eligible for subject-restricted admission through a Studienkolleg preparatory year at a German university. You complete the Feststellungsprüfung, then apply.
2. The direct subject-restricted route. Class XII with at least 70%, an APS certificate, and one successfully completed academic year within a recognised Bachelor's program in India can qualify you for direct admission to that same field or a closely related subject. The academic year must be part of a regular Bachelor's degree and must be genuinely completed.

APS has stated clearly that completing one academic year does not automatically guarantee direct admission. Universities still decide.

The second constraint is language. Most TUM Bachelor's programs are taught in German, which means DSH-2, TestDaF level 4 in all sections, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, Goethe-Zertifikat C2 or DSD II. Fully English-taught Bachelor's options at TUM are limited, and Aerospace and Information Engineering are the two programs where TUM accepts lower German levels.

Counselor insight: If your Class XII total sits at 65 to 69%, both standard routes are closed to you, and Studienkolleg will not bridge the gap. A properly attested improvement or re-attempt result that lifts you above 70% is the only realistic fix. Plan for that timeline rather than applying and hoping.

Master’s Admission Requirements and How TUM’s Aptitude Assessment Actually Works

The Master's TU Munich admission requirements start with a recognised undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. Another Master's does not count as an entrance qualification for a Master's program. Beyond that, TUM selects through an aptitude assessment, and this is the part almost no guide explains.

Stage one. TUM evaluates your grade point average and subject-specific grades using a points system defined in each program's examination regulations, alongside a curricular analysis. The curricular analysis is not a schematic module-by-module comparison. TUM assesses competencies against the subject groups of its own equivalent Bachelor's program. You fill it in yourself during your TUMonline application, assigning your modules to subject groups and uploading module descriptions.

Depending on your score, you are admitted directly, rejected directly, or moved to stage two.

Stage two. Usually a 20-minute admissions interview conducted by the School, often by video for international applicants. For several programs at the TUM School of Engineering and Design and the TUM School of Management, a written test or an assessment of your academic qualification plus an essay replaces the interview. In the MSc Informatics regulations, for example, essays are scored from 0 to 15 by two committee members, stage-one documents are scored from 0 to 100, and 70 points passes the assessment.

One detail that matters specifically to Indian applicants: TUM states that for some programs, applicants who obtained their Bachelor's degree in a country outside the scope of the Lisbon Convention take an online test in stage one. India is outside that scope. Check your program's "How do I apply?" section to see whether this applies to you.

Counselor insight: The curricular analysis is where Indian B.Tech applications quietly fail. Students dump half their transcript into the "all other subjects" category because it is faster. Sit with your transcript and your target program's subject groups, assign each module deliberately, and upload the module description for anything a German committee would not recognise by title alone. Language Requirements: IELTS, TOEFL, MOI and German

Language proof is the most searched piece of the TU Munich admission requirements, and TUM's central list is specific. TUM's language certificates page sets these minimums for English:

• IELTS Academic: overall band 6.5. IELTS Online Academic is also accepted at 6.5. An IELTS One Skill Retake counts only if you upload a new complete Test Report Form.
• TOEFL iBT: 88, including the Home Edition. Only the Test Date Score is valid, MyBest Score is not accepted, and TOEFL ITP is not accepted at all. Use ETS institution code 7806 so TUM can verify your result.

For German-taught programs, TUM accepts DSH-2, TestDaF with level 4 in all sections, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, Goethe-Zertifikat C2, or DSD II at B2 across all four sections.

Some programs accept proof that your previous degree was taught in English instead of a test score. This is program-dependent, not a TUM-wide rule, and Indian board school grades cannot be used as English proof for Master's admission. Confirm on your program page before you skip the test. Counselor insight: Read the program page, then book the test. Students book IELTS off the central page, score 6.5, and then find their target program wanted something else or would have accepted their medium of instruction certificate. That is Rs.19,000 and six weeks lost for nothing.

When Things Go Wrong with your TUM Application

Even applicants who meet every one of the TU Munich admission requirements hit problems. Here is what actually helps.

Your Class XII total is below 70%. Both undergraduate routes close. A properly attested improvement or re-attempt result that crosses 70% is the route back in. Do not apply in the hope that TUM will overlook it, because the gate sits at APS, not at TUM.

Your university shows H+/- or H- in anabin. No APS certificate will be issued and a strong dMAT score cannot compensate. APS has stated this directly. Shortlist alternative destinations rather than spending on tests.

Your APS certificate will not arrive before the TUM deadline. Contact the program's admissions office in writing well before the deadline and ask what placeholder documentation they accept. Do not simply submit an incomplete file.

You missed the dMAT registration deadline. APS India cannot reserve test seats, and booking is handled by g.a.s.t. on a first come, first served basis. Your realistic move is the next test date and the next intake.

Your IELTS is 6.0. TUM's central minimum is 6.5, and a band below that will not be waived. A focused six to eight week retake cycle is usually enough to close a 0.5 gap.

Your degree sits between affected dMAT fields. Programs like engineering management, business analytics, or data science can straddle categories. APS publishes an official affected-fields list, and that list decides, not your degree title.

Counselor insight: When something breaks, get the reason in writing and fix that one thing. Students restart their entire application over a single fixable document and lose a full intake doing it.
