• English-language proficiency proof: IELTS (commonly 6.0-7.0) or TOEFL

Some universities waive the English test entirely if your previous degree was taught fully in English, so a waiver is possible for certain applicants, though this is program-specific and must be confirmed directly with the admissions office rather than assumed. GRE or GMAT is required only for select business and engineering programs.

For 2027-28 academic year entry (studies starting autumn 2027), the main joint application typically opens in January, following the same pattern as the 2026 cycle; Studyinfo.fi publishes the exact dates a few months ahead, so check the portal directly rather than relying on last year's dates.
2. Prepare documents: transcripts, CV, SOP, recommendation letters, and English test scores.
3. Pay the application fee: EUR 100 (Rs. 10,800), mandatory for all non-EU/EEA applicants applying through Studyinfo.fi since August 2025.
4. Submit your application within the deadline and track its status through the portal.
5. Accept your offer and pay the tuition deposit if required, or apply for a scholarship if one is offered.

This is the section every applicant searching for the cost of an MS in Finland needs to read first. From 1 August 2026, Finland's tuition-fee reform requires non-EU and non-EEA master's students to pay fully cost-covering tuition, replacing the earlier system where universities set fees with more flexibility. In practice, most programs still fall in the EUR 8,000-20,000 a year band, but a handful of high-demand courses now sit at the top of that range or above it.

Is a masters degree free in Finland? Not for Indian students. Finland's famous free, EU-funded education applies to EU/EEA and Swiss citizens. Indian applicants are classed as non-EU/EEA and pay tuition plus a non-refundable application fee, so if you've seen "study in Finland for free" claims, they don't apply to the international master's route.

University scholarships (see below) can substantially reduce fees, so treat the tuition figure above as a ceiling, not a fixed cost. Your estimate should always include the application fee and insurance alongside tuition, which many first-time applicants forget to budget for.

Monthly living costs depend heavily on the city. Helsinki runs higher than smaller university towns like Oulu or Jyvaskyla.

Migri requires proof of funds of at least EUR 800 per month (about EUR 9,600, or Rs. 10.37L, for a full year) to grant a residence permit for studies, so this figure is the number to plan your sponsorship or loan around, not just the tuition fee. Most Finnish universities, not a central government fund, are the main source of scholarships for a masters in Finland with scholarship support. Aalto University and the University of Helsinki both run merit-based scholarship programs that can cover 50-100% of tuition for strong non-EU applicants, and several other universities run comparable schemes tied to academic performance at the time of admission.

There's no separate application in most cases: when you apply through Studyinfo.fi, you're usually automatically considered for the university's scholarship if you tick the relevant box, though some programs do require a short scholarship essay. Indian students staying in Finland for more than 90 days need a residence permit for studies, applied for through Migri's Enter Finland portal, not a traditional student visa.

These fees rose from EUR 450 (online) and EUR 550 (paper) on 1 January 2026, so if you've seen older figures quoted, they're out of date. Processing can take 2-5 months, so apply as soon as you receive your university acceptance letter. Since 2022, time spent on a residence permit for a full degree program has counted toward Finland's permanent residence requirement, which is a meaningful change from the older system.
