The Board of Architects Singapore recognises exactly two local programs for professional registration: the Master of Architecture from the National University of Singapore, and the Master of Architecture from the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Several pages ranking for this keyword also list NTU. NTU does not appear on that list.

This decides whether your degree counts. A masters in architecture in Singapore that is not on the Board of Architects list will not serve as the qualification you need to register as an architect there. SUTD's program has been accredited since December 2016, and both universities confirm their M.Arch graduates hold a prerequisite degree for registration.

If you want a specialisation rather than a professional degree, NUS also runs a Master of Landscape Architecture, a Master of Arts in Architectural Conservation, a Master of Arts in Urban Design, a Master of Urban Planning and an MSc in Integrated Sustainable Design. Those are separate degrees, covered further down.

Counselor insight: Decide one thing before anything else. Do you want to practise and sign drawings, or do you want a specialisation? If it is the former, the two-program list above is your entire universe. If it is the latter, your options widen and often cost less.

NUS vs SUTD: Comparing your Masters in Architecture in Singapore Options

The two programs look similar on paper and behave differently in practice.

The line that matters most is the second-last one. NUS lists its M.Arch admission eligibility in terms of its own coursework: an average grade of B or higher in AR3101 Design 5 and AR3102 Design 6, completion of the Integrated Design Specialization, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 on graduation from the BA (Arch) Honours program. An external route exists through proof of accreditation on Form A, subject to approval by the Board of Graduate Studies, but the program is built as a progression from NUS's own undergraduate degree. SUTD, by contrast, states plainly that its program is open to all students with four years of university education in architecture.

Counselor insight: Almost every Indian student who comes to me has NUS on top because of the rankings. For the professional M.Arch, I ask them to apply to SUTD first and treat NUS as the stretch. That is not a comment on quality, but on how the two admission pipelines are built.

Eligibility for a Masters in Architecture in Singapore with an Indian B.Arch

Here is the good news nobody tells Indian students. Your B.Arch is a five-year degree, and SUTD requires four years of university-level architecture education under the Board of Architects requirement. You clear it comfortably.

The SUTD admission criteria ask for:

• At least a bachelor's degree in architecture from an accredited university
• Demonstrated relevant work experience and its duration, to meet the Board of Architects requirement for taking an accredited master's course
• Proof of accreditation by a national accreditation board or the Board of Architects of your country, or by the Board of Architects Singapore, subject to approval
• English proficiency through IELTS or TOEFL, which may be required if English was not your medium of instruction
• Some experience programming in a modern language such as Python, JavaScript, C++ or C#
• Some working knowledge of Rhino 3D, Grasshopper and digital fabrication

Those last two lines are where most Indian applicants are weakest. A typical Indian B.Arch runs on AutoCAD, Revit and SketchUp. Rhino with Grasshopper is a different way of thinking about form, and SUTD's curriculum is built around computational design and fabrication.

If you hold only three years of formal university architecture education, SUTD routes you to a two-year track: two academic terms inside the undergraduate program as a non-graduating student, then direct entry into the M.Arch without reapplying. Non-graduating terms are billed at non-subsidised rates, so this track costs meaningfully more. Applicants with work experience can request advanced standing to skip the structured internship by writing to the program before applying.

Counselor insight: Start Grasshopper six months before you apply, not after you get in. Rebuild an existing B.Arch studio project parametrically and put the process, not just the render, in your portfolio. Panels can tell who has used a plugin once and who thinks in it.

SUTD Master of Architecture, AY2026 intake

The non-subsidised tuition fee, which is the rate an international student pays, is S$52,086 per academic year inclusive of GST. That is Rs.39,13,742, billed in two instalments across Term 9 and Term 10. International students also pay a compulsory miscellaneous fee of S$232 (Rs.17,432) per term plus a one-time enrolment fee of S$10 (Rs.751). The Ministry of Education subsidy applies to Singapore Citizens and permanent residents, not to an international student entering the M.Arch directly.

NUS Master of Architecture, AY2026/2027 intake

The NUS registrar's graduate tuition schedule lists the M.Arch non-subsidised rate for Singapore Permanent Residents and International Students at S$42,450 (Rs.31,89,693) per annum. In the MOE-subsidised column, the international student rate for this program is listed as not applicable.

Living costs

Budget S$12,000 to S$15,000 a year, which is Rs.9.02 lakh to Rs.11.27 lakh, covering accommodation, food and transport. Public transport is cheap. Rent does the damage.

For comparison, NUS's self-funded architecture master's programs are priced per program rather than per year. The Master of Landscape Architecture is S$98,100 (Rs.73.71 lakh) in total for international students across four semesters, and the Master of Arts in Architectural Conservation is S$49,050 (Rs.36.86 lakh).

Documents and Application Checklist for a Masters in Architecture in Singapore

SUTD estimates 15 to 20 minutes to complete the online application form. Assembling the documents takes considerably longer.

Counselor insight: Indian referees submit late because nobody warned them. SUTD asks recommenders to submit within one week. Send them the link, the deadline and a one-page reminder of what you did in their studio, on the day you submit.

2026-27 Timeline: Applying for a Masters in Architecture in Singapore

This calendar is built around the Indian academic year, assuming final-year B.Arch students graduating in mid-2027.

Right now, in late August 2026, the SUTD window for the 2027 intake is already open.

Counselor insight: The most common failure I see is treating December as the deadline month. Portfolio exports, transcript attestation and referee reminders all run long, and Indian university offices shut for a fortnight in late December. Target 10 December.

What to Do When Your Masters in Architecture in Singapore Plan goes Wrong

You missed the 31 December SUTD deadline. There is one intake a year. Use the twelve months to gain practice experience and rebuild the portfolio computationally, then apply for the 2028 intake from a stronger position.

Your IELTS band fell short. Check whether you need it at all. If your B.Arch was taught in English, request a formal medium-of-instruction certificate. SUTD allows score submission up to two weeks after the deadline, so a January retake may still work, but confirm in writing.

Your portfolio is all renders and no process. The most fixable problem here. Rebuild two projects showing iteration, structural logic and fabrication thinking. Panels assess how you think, not how well you operate a rendering engine.

Your Student's Pass documentation is questioned. Unclear proof of funds is a common cause. Use statements showing a stable balance over several months rather than one large recent deposit, and include sponsor identity and relationship documents where a parent is funding you.

You have no job offer as the program ends. Speak to your university's career office before your final term. An S Pass role at a lower salary threshold is a separate route with its own rules, not a discounted EP.

The loan sanction falls short mid-program. Contact student finance immediately. Payment schedules and short-term facilities exist, but only for students who raise the issue before the bill goes overdue.
