How the INSEAD Scholarship System Works in 2027-28

An INSEAD scholarship is financial aid awarded by the school itself, applied against your tuition after you have been admitted to the MBA. You cannot apply for one before you have an application in the system.

INSEAD runs over 170 scholarship funds across its Fontainebleau and Singapore campuses and states that it has doubled its scholarship funds over the last three years. Around 38% of MBA participants receive some form of scholarship, with an average award of โ‚ฌ24,000.

There are three categories:

Scholarship typeBasis of awardSeparate application neededBest suited to
Need-basedDocumented financial needYes, with supporting financial documentsApplicants without family capital or collateral, funding the MBA on a loan
Merit-basedCountry of origin, professional background, leadership potentialYes, with essays specific to each fundStrong profiles from India and other emerging markets, women in leadership, unconventional career paths
SpotOutstanding admissions profileNo, awarded directlyCandidates whose application already stands out. Nothing to do here except apply well

You may apply for a maximum of four scholarships. The scholarship form opens inside the same application platform only after your MBA application has been submitted.

Counselor insight: Run the arithmetic before you plan around a scholarship. The average award of Rs.26.4 lakh (โ‚ฌ24,000) covers about 22% of the Rs.1.21 crore tuition bill, and roughly 17% of the full Rs.1.54 crore tuition-plus-living cost at Fontainebleau. Even among the 38% who are funded, the typical Indian student is still self-financing over three-quarters of the program. Applicants who model a 20% reduction rather than a waiver are the ones who do not have to withdraw in May.

INSEAD Scholarship Eligibility Criteria for Indian Applicants

Admission to the MBA is the only hard gate. Beyond that, eligibility depends on the fund.

RequirementWhat INSEAD expects
MBA applicationSubmitted and complete. The scholarship form opens in the same platform once your MBA application is in, and closes on your round’s financial aid deadline.
Test scoreA GMAT or GRE score on file. No minimum and no scholarship-specific cut-off is published
Supporting documentsTwo professional references, plus English proficiency evidence unless your degree was taught in English
Need-based fundsProof that you cannot raise the full cost and that loan access is limited
Merit and geography fundsCountry of origin, professional background and leadership potential

Two routes matter most for Indian candidates. The Deepak and Sunita Gupta Endowed Scholarship covers emerging-market candidates with proven financial need, opens in Rounds 1 to 3 only, and grants one or two awards per class. For women, the INSEAD MBA’81 Scholarship prioritises candidates who cannot otherwise finance the MBA, and the Euronext endowed fund made its first awards in August 2026 for the 2027 cohort.

Filter the official scholarship finder by MBA and India before shortlisting your four.

Counselor insight: The “700+ GMAT needed for an INSEAD scholarship” claim on Indian forums is not an INSEAD rule and appears nowhere in its published criteria. A retake costs six to ten weeks and Round 1 for August 2027 closes on 22 October 2026, so a candidate at 690 in Round 1 has the full fund pool while the same candidate retaking into Round 3 competes for what is left. GMAT sample papers will tell you faster than a forum whether a retake moves your score.

INSEAD Scholarship Deadlines and Decision Dates for 2027-28

INSEAD publishes a Financial Aid Calendar separately from its admissions deadlines. These are the scholarship dates, not the application dates.

August 2027 intake (the main 2027-28 entry point):

RoundScholarship application deadlineDecision notification
Round 122 October 202627 November 2026
Round 27 December 202627 January 2027
Round 324 February 202725 March 2027
Round 412 April 202714 May 2027

January 2027 intake (only Round 4 remains open):

RoundScholarship application deadlineDecision notification
Round 44 September 202630 October 2026

Applications must be complete and submitted by 23:59 CET on the deadline date. INSEAD states plainly that it cannot accept scholarship applications after the deadline. There is no grace period and no appeal.

The January 2028 calendar has not been published yet. If January 2028 is your target, work to the August 2027 dates as a planning proxy and re-check the official calendar from mid-2027.

Month-by-month plan for an Indian applicant targeting August 2027, Round 1 or 2:

PeriodWhat you doWhy the timing matters in India
Aug to Sep 2026Finalise GMAT or GRE score. Start bank and NBFC loan conversationsLoan sanction takes four to eight weeks and needs collateral valuation
Oct 2026Submit MBA application. Round 1 scholarship deadline 22 OctoberFalls in the middle of the Indian festive season. Bank turnaround slows
Nov 2026Round 1 scholarship decision 27 NovemberSanction letter should be in hand by now, not in process
Dec 2026Round 2 scholarship deadline 7 DecemberSecond window if Round 1 did not convert
Jan to Mar 2027Interview outcomes, offers, first instalment demandFirst instalment is non-refundable. See the cost section below
Apr 2027New Indian financial year begins 1 April. LRS limit resetsSplitting remittances across financial years becomes possible
May to Jun 2027Second instalment, visa, accommodationFrench student visa appointments tighten from June
Aug 2027The program begins

Counselor insight: Rounds 1 and 2 give the widest access to the fund pool, and one INSEAD fund category explicitly reserves a portion for later rounds while others close entirely after Round 3. The Gupta scholarship for emerging-market candidates, for instance, does not accept Round 4 applications at all. For an Indian applicant, that means the practical scholarship deadline is 7 December 2026, not 12 April 2027.

What an INSEAD Scholarship Covers Against the Real INR Cost

INSEAD tuition for the January 2027 intake is Rs.1,20,84,600 (โ‚ฌ109,860), inclusive of taxes. It covers course materials, library and IT access, gym access and health insurance. It does not cover living costs.

Line itemFontainebleauSingapore
TuitionRs.1,20,84,600 (โ‚ฌ109,860)Rs.1,20,84,600 (โ‚ฌ109,860)
Living costs, 10 months, single participantRs.33,00,000 (โ‚ฌ30,000)Rs.35,20,000 (โ‚ฌ32,000)
Total outlayRs.1,53,84,600 (โ‚ฌ139,860)Rs.1,56,04,600 (โ‚ฌ141,860)
Less average INSEAD scholarshipRs.26,40,000 (โ‚ฌ24,000)Rs.26,40,000 (โ‚ฌ24,000)
Net cost to fundRs.1,27,44,600 (โ‚ฌ115,860)Rs.1,29,64,600 (โ‚ฌ117,860)

Accommodation is the largest living cost at Rs.12,10,000 (โ‚ฌ11,000) in Fontainebleau and Rs.17,60,000 (โ‚ฌ16,000) in Singapore. Add roughly 30% if a partner is accompanying you.

The payment schedule is where Indian families get caught. January 2027 tuition is payable in three instalments:

  1. Rs.13,20,000 (โ‚ฌ12,000), non-refundable, due roughly four weeks after the admissions offer
  2. Rs.58,30,000 (โ‚ฌ53,000), due 5 October 2026 for Rounds 1 and 2, or 4 December 2026 for Rounds 3 and 4
  3. Rs.49,34,600 (โ‚ฌ44,860), due 15 April

Under the RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme, a resident individual may remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year. The total fits inside one person’s annual limit, but the cap aggregates across all purposes and Tax Collected at Source applies, so most families split instalments across two financial years.

Exchange rate used: Rs.110 per EUR (August 2026). Verify before budgeting: a two-rupee move shifts the total by about Rs.2.8 lakh.

Counselor insight: For August 2027 Round 1, the scholarship decision lands on 27 November 2026, but the admissions offer arrives earlier and the non-refundable Rs.13,20,000 (โ‚ฌ12,000) first instalment falls due about four weeks after it. Awards are applied to a later instalment, so they never reduce that first payment. Hold a sanction letter, not a pending loan application, before your offer arrives.

Documents Required for an INSEAD Scholarship Application from India

Need-based funds require documentary proof, not assertions. Assemble these before the deadline rather than during it.

DocumentWhat INSEAD expectsIndia-specific detail
Salary proofRecent salary slip or an employer letterCarry the last three months. Indian CTC structures include variable and retention components that need a one-line explanation
Bank documentsStatements covering the last three months, showing savingsAttach statements from every account. Fixed deposits and recurring deposits count as assets and should be disclosed
Income tax recordsEvidence of declared incomeForm 16 and ITR acknowledgements for the last two assessment years. Add parental ITRs if you are claiming family support is unavailable
Academic marksheetsTranscripts from your degreeSemester-wise marksheets plus provisional or degree certificate. Percentage-to-GPA context helps the reviewer
Net worth statementFamily assets and liabilitiesA CA-certified statement is standard practice for Indian applicants and pre-empts follow-up queries
Exceptional circumstancesSubstantiation for medical costs, bankruptcy or similar events in the last yearHospital bills, insurance rejection letters or settlement documents, translated if not in English
Loan documentationEvidence of what you can and cannot borrowA rejection or partial-sanction letter is strong evidence of limited loan access

Register for the scholarship portal using your name exactly as it appears on your admission application.

Counselor insight: Name mismatch is the most common avoidable delay for Indian applicants. Indian documents frequently carry expanded initials, so a candidate registered as “S. Kumar” on the MBA application and “Suresh Kumar” on the scholarship form creates a record the financial aid office cannot link. Fixing it costs days you do not have against a 23:59 CET cut-off.

How to Apply for an INSEAD Scholarship: Step by Step

INSEAD’s own process is three steps.

  1. Submit your MBA application through the Application Online platform. The same platform handles scholarships, so there is no second portal to register on.
  2. Apply for scholarships. The scholarship form becomes available once your MBA application is submitted. Select up to four scholarships, complete the required fields and essays, and submit before your round’s deadline.
  3. Review and decision. Applications are assessed on merit, financial need and the eligibility criteria specific to each fund. Some funds carry different notification dates from the standard round calendar.

What the essays actually ask. Need and diversity funds typically want 300 to 400 words on your background and schooling, how you plan to contribute to your country or region after graduation, why the INSEAD MBA is relevant to your career, and a specific account of your financial circumstances including the budget you have built for the year and how you would fund the program without a scholarship.

Counselor insight: The four-slot cap is a strategy decision, not a formality. The broad need-based pool draws applications from every emerging market in the class. Narrow funds draw far fewer, and some grant only one or two awards per class. Spending all four slots on the largest, most generic funds is the single most common allocation error. A workable split for an Indian candidate: two broad need or diversity funds, one geography or emerging-market fund, one fund matched to a specific attribute such as gender, sector or an unconventional pre-MBA background.

What to Do When Your INSEAD Scholarship Plan Goes Wrong

You missed the deadline. There is no late submission. Your options are the next round in the same intake, or the next intake. INSEAD reviews all scholarship applications immediately after each deadline, so a late file is simply not read.

You were rejected for a scholarship but admitted. Waitlisted and admitted candidates can still be reviewed in subsequent rounds where funds remain, and INSEAD maintains a database of international loan options alongside its own funds. Model the full Rs.1,53,84,600 (โ‚ฌ139,860) on loan and savings alone before you accept.

You won a full external award as well. If you receive an INSEAD scholarship and then a full-tuition external or national award, the INSEAD award is withdrawn and reallocated to another candidate. Partial external awards are reviewed case by case. Model both outcomes before you chase a large external scholarship on top of a confirmed INSEAD one, because the stacking rules can leave you no better off.

Your loan sanction arrives after the first instalment is due. The Rs.13,20,000 (โ‚ฌ12,000) first instalment is non-refundable and cannot be deferred against a pending sanction. Arrange bridge funding, a family loan or a partial disbursement in advance.

The rupee moves against you. The third instalment falls due months after the second. A five-rupee move on the EUR adds roughly Rs.2.2 lakh to a โ‚ฌ44,860 payment. Book forward cover or remit early if your bank permits it.

Counselor insight: The Class of 2025 outcome data is the number to hold against all of this. INSEAD reports a median base salary of Rs.1,10,00,000 (โ‚ฌ100,000) with a median sign-on bonus of Rs.31,79,000 (โ‚ฌ28,900), and 81% of graduates received at least one offer within three months. Median first-year base pay is therefore close to the entire tuition bill. That is what makes a shortfall a financing problem rather than a viability problem, and it is why bridge funding at 10% interest for six months is usually the better answer than declining an offer.

3 Takeaways on INSEAD Scholarship

If you are targeting an INSEAD scholarship for 2027-28, three things decide the outcome.

  1. Budget for a partial award, not a waiver. The average is Rs.26.4 lakh (โ‚ฌ24,000) against Rs.1.21 crore in tuition and Rs.1.54 crore all-in at Fontainebleau.
  2. Treat 7 December 2026 as your real deadline. Rounds 1 and 2 of the August 2027 intake carry the widest fund access, and several emerging-market funds close entirely after Round 3.
  3. Hold a loan sanction letter before your offer arrives. The Rs.13,20,000 (โ‚ฌ12,000) first instalment is non-refundable and can fall due before your scholarship decision is notified.

Frequently Asked Questions About INSEAD Scholarship

  • What happens if I miss the INSEAD scholarship deadline?

Late applications are not accepted under any circumstances. Submissions close at 23:59 CET on the deadline date, and all applications are reviewed immediately afterwards. Your realistic options are the next round in the same intake or the next intake. Waitlisted candidates who apply within a deadline are still reviewed while on the waitlist.

  • Does an INSEAD scholarship cover living expenses?

INSEAD scholarships are applied against tuition instalments rather than living costs. Living expenses run to about Rs.33 lakh (โ‚ฌ30,000) at Fontainebleau and Rs.35.2 lakh (โ‚ฌ32,000) in Singapore for a single participant over ten months. Budget these separately and add roughly 30% if a partner is accompanying you.

  • Are there INSEAD scholarships specifically for Indian students?

Yes. Two INSEAD funds are open only to Indian candidates. The INSEAD Indian Alumni Scholarship goes to Indian citizens with proven financial need. The INSEAD Kalipatnapu Scholarship for Indian Students, funded by the Kalipatnapu Foundation, supports financially challenged Indian admits. Beyond these, several emerging-market funds include India, among them the Deepak and Sunita Gupta Endowed Scholarship and the Orange Endowed Scholarship for Emerging Markets.

  • When do INSEAD scholarship results come out for the 2027 intakes?

For the August 2027 intake, scholarship decisions are notified on 27 November 2026 for Round 1, 27 January 2027 for Round 2, 25 March 2027 for Round 3 and 14 May 2027 for Round 4. Some individual funds carry different notification dates. The January 2027 intake Round 4 decision was set for 30 October 2026.

  • What GMAT score do I need for an INSEAD scholarship?

INSEAD publishes no minimum GMAT score for admission or for scholarship eligibility. Scholarship decisions weigh merit, financial need and fund-specific criteria such as country of origin and professional background. A retake that pushes you from Round 1 to Round 3 usually costs more in fund access than the extra points gain.

  • Does INSEAD give full scholarships?

Full-tuition INSEAD scholarships are rare. The published average of โ‚ฌ24,000 covers about 22% of the โ‚ฌ109,860 tuition. Some named funds award โ‚ฌ25,000 to โ‚ฌ30,000 or more. Build your budget around a partial award and treat anything larger as an upside rather than a plan.

  • How many INSEAD scholarships can I apply for?

You may apply for a maximum of four scholarships. The scholarship form opens inside the online application platform after your MBA application is submitted. Because narrow funds draw far fewer applicants than the broad need-based pool, how you allocate those four slots matters more than most applicants assume.

  • Is it hard to get an INSEAD scholarship?

Roughly 38% of INSEAD MBA students receive scholarship support, so a majority of the class does not. The binding constraints are round timing and fund selection rather than raw profile strength. Applicants in Rounds 1 and 2 access the widest fund pool, and several emerging-market funds grant only one or two awards per class.

  • How much scholarship does INSEAD give?

The average INSEAD scholarship award is โ‚ฌ24,000, which is about Rs.26.4 lakh. Individual awards vary widely by fund, with some emerging-market and geography scholarships granting significantly more. Around 38% of MBA participants receive a scholarship, drawn from over 170 funds across the Fontainebleau and Singapore campuses.
