There are many good universities that offer an MS in Data Science in Germany. But they differ in rankings, admissions, and cost. Most of the best programs start in the winter, in October. There is a summer intake in April, but it is much smaller. There are fewer programs and scholarships, and most research positions are already filled by then.

Counselor insight: The Data Engineering & Analytics track at TUM is one of the most useful programs in Germany. Although acceptance rates are not made public, based on the number of applications, you can expect them to be very selective. If your CGPA is less than 7.5/10, you should make strong applications to second-tier schools like Freiburg and Mannheim at the same time.

There are three labels for programs that look a lot alike, but they lead to very different careers and courses. You can't switch between an MS in Data Science, an MS in Data Analytics, and an MS in Artificial Intelligence. Before you narrow down your choices of universities, you should know what each degree prepares you for. This will help you avoid applying to the wrong program. If an Indian student wants to get an MS in Data Science in Germany, they can choose one of these three clear paths.

For Indian students, this is the most-searched question next to it. The answer depends on your goals, not just your grades.

Counselor insight: A lot of Indian students choose "Data Science" because it sounds more important. Before you apply, look at the course outline. Some programs that say "Data Science" are really 60% business analytics classes. If you really want a DS degree, look for programs that require lessons in machine learning, probability theory, and distributed computing.

When German universities want to convert Indian grades, they use a modified Bavarian formula. On Germany's 1.0-4.0 scale, a CGPA of 7.0/10 is equal to about 2.7. Most MS in Data Science programs in Germany require at least a 2.5. At any public university in Germany, you don't need the GRE.

Indian students who want to get an MS in data science in Germany need to bring certain documents that are different from those needed in the US or UK.

Do You Need the dMAT for an MS in Data Science in Germany?

Since 29 June 2026, APS India and g.a.s.t. have added the Digital Master Test (dMAT) to the APS documentation process. It does not replace the APS certificate. It is an extra document inside the same file.

For this program, whether it applies to you depends on your bachelor's degree, not on the Masters you are applying for.

If it does apply to you, the practical details: the fee is Rs. 16,530 (EUR 150) and non-refundable, the first test in India was held on 26 September 2026 with certificates issued from 12 October, and seats at each test center go first come, first served. The registration process runs through the g.a.s.t. portal, separately from your APS application, and the APS and dMAT guide explains how the two files connect.

Counselor insight: Your APS timeline is already the step Indian students underestimate, and the dMAT sits in front of it, not beside it. The test is an aptitude paper rather than a data science exam, so a BTech CSE graduate is not at a disadvantage on content. What catches people is the unfamiliar question formats in the core module, particularly figure sequences, Latin squares and mathematical equations. Take one mock test before you study anything, then work through sample questions using the how to prepare for dMAT plan. Four focused weeks is enough if you start on time.

This calendar is built for the Winter Semester 2027 intake, which starts in October 2027. That is the next realistic entry point if you are reading this in late 2026. Summer Semester 2027 applications are already closed at most universities, and Winter 2026 admissions are done.

Counselor insight: The order matters more than the dates. For an affected applicant the chain is dMAT, then certificate, then APS, then university application, and each link has its own waiting period. Students who treat these as parallel tasks discover in February that they cannot file APS because the dMAT certificate is not out yet, and by then the May application deadlines are unreachable. Work backwards from your target deadline and add up the waiting periods honestly: roughly three weeks for the dMAT certificate plus four to ten weeks for APS means you need to start the test process about four months before your first application deadline, not one.

If you are targeting Summer Semester 2027 instead (April 2027 start), most deadlines have passed and the intake is much smaller, with fewer programs, fewer scholarships and most research positions already filled. Winter 2027 is the stronger plan for almost everyone.

Scholarships for an MS in Data Science in Germany are available, but you need to start planning ahead of time. DAAD is the most well-known option, but there are others as well. • If you don't get your APS certificate on time, Most German universities will take your application even if you don't have the APS certificate, but they won't send you an official letter of acceptance until you send it in. Apply on time and let the admissions office know that your certificate is still being processed. Do not wait until APS to apply.
• If you get turned down by your first choice, there is no way to appeal at most universities in Germany. Take the rejection as a sign to improve your SOP and apply again for the next intake. Gap semesters are common and don't hurt your chances of getting into a German school.
• If you can't get your visa until after the semester starts, get in touch with the university's International Office right away. Most will let you sign up for the next semester instead. Do not go anywhere without a confirmed visa.
• Whatever the minimums are, if your CGPA is below them: If your CGPA is between 0.3 and 0.5 points, you should still apply. Make sure you have a strong SOP that directly addresses the gap and highlights relevant experience, projects, or certifications (AWS, Google Data, etc.). Some schools use a holistic review.
• If you cannot fund the blocked account, Indian bank education loans (SBI, Bank of Baroda) cover the blocked account requirement. You can give VFS your letter approving the loan, and once the loan is paid out, the blocked account will be funded separately.

1. You must apply for the APS certificate at least 10 weeks before the deadline for your application; you cannot skip this step. All Indian students are required to do this. Students have lost admission offers because they didn't take this step.

2. Indian applicants to most public universities in Germany need to have a CGPA of at least 6.5 to 7.0/10, but students with 7.5/10 or higher are usually accepted to competitive programs like TU Munich and LMU. Before making a short list of universities, compare your CGPA to the modified Bavarian formula. This will tell you which programs are realistic for you.
