How to Get a Job in Canada From India: The Four Routes, Ranked
To work in Canada as an Indian citizen you need work authorisation before your first day, and in most cases that means an employer-specific work permit tied to a named job offer. That single requirement is why the honest answer to how to get a job in Canada from India is not “polish your resume.” It is “pick the route that is actually open to you.”
There are four. Here is how they compare in 2027.

| Route | Job offer needed first? | Who it suits | Realistic timeline | The 2026 blocker |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Employer-specific work permit with LMIA | Yes | Anyone with a genuine Canadian offer | 4 to 9 months after the offer | Employer must fund and win an LMIA; low-wage applications are frozen in most big cities |
| LMIA-exempt work permit (International Mobility Program, including intra-company transfers) | Yes, but no LMIA | Employees of multinationals with a Canadian entity | 2 to 4 months | You need an existing employer with a Canadian office |
| Permanent residence first, through Express Entry | No | Graduates and professionals with strong English and a degree | 12 to 24 months | Cut-offs are high, and a job offer no longer adds points |
| Study in Canada, then Post-Graduation Work Permit | No | Students under 30 with funds for tuition | 2 to 4 years | Highest cost, and student intake targets were cut sharply for 2026 |
Notice what the table says about route one. It is the route almost every article recommends, and it is the one with the most conditions attached in 2026.
Counselor insight: Students come to us convinced route one is the "direct" option and route three is the "backup." For most Indian applicants with a bachelor's degree and good English, it is the reverse. Permanent residence is slower on paper but it does not depend on a stranger in Toronto choosing to spend Rs.68,520 (C$1,000) and eight weeks of paperwork on you specifically.
If you want to see which sectors are actually hiring before you choose, our breakdown of jobs in Canada for Indian students is a useful starting point.
Why the LMIA Route to a Job in Canada From India Is Narrower in 2027
An LMIA, or Labour Market Impact Assessment, is a document in which a Canadian employer proves to Employment and Social Development Canada that no Canadian could fill the role. Your employer applies, pays for it, and waits. You cannot apply for one yourself.
Here is the part almost nobody tells Indian applicants. Since 26 September 2024, ESDC will refuse to process a low-wage LMIA application if the wage is below the provincial or territorial threshold and the work location sits in a census metropolitan area where unemployment is 6% or higher. The rate table is refreshed every three months.
For applications submitted between 10 July and 8 October 2026, these are the figures that matter:
| City | Unemployment rate | Low-wage LMIA status |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | 7.3% | Will not be processed |
| Edmonton | 7.2% | Will not be processed |
| Calgary | 7.0% | Will not be processed |
| Montrรฉal | 6.8% | Will not be processed |
| Vancouver | 6.7% | Will not be processed |
| Ottawa-Gatineau | 6.7% | Will not be processed |
| Winnipeg | 5.6% | Eligible |
| Quรฉbec City | 4.0% | Eligible |
Every major destination city an Indian applicant would name is on the blocked list this quarter. The next refresh is 9 October 2026.
There are exemptions. Primary agriculture, construction, food manufacturing, hospitals, nursing and residential care, certain in-home caregiver roles, and short-duration positions of roughly 120 days or less remain eligible even in blocked cities. And the freeze applies only to the low-wage stream. If the offered wage is at or above the provincial threshold, the employer applies under the high-wage stream and the regional freeze does not apply.
The wider picture matters too. The 2026 to 2028 Immigration Levels Plan cut temporary resident arrival targets to 385,000 for 2026, a reduction of 43% on the 2025 target. Fewer permits are being issued overall.
Counselor insight: Before you spend three months courting an employer, ask them one question: is this role above or below the provincial wage threshold, and which stream will they file under? A recruiter who cannot answer that has not looked into it, and you are the one who will lose the months.
The Express Entry Change Most Indian Applicants Get Wrong About Jobs in Canada
As of 25 March 2025, IRCC no longer awards CRS points for a job offer in Express Entry. The 200 points for a senior management offer and the 50 points for any other skilled occupation are both gone, and the removal applies to candidates already in the pool. The page was last updated 22 June 2026, so it still stands.
Eligibility did not change. A valid offer still counts toward the Federal Skilled Trades Program, Federal Skilled Worker Program and some provincial nominee streams, and IRCC advises keeping the details in your profile. But if a consultant says a job offer will lift your CRS score, they are two years out of date or selling you something.
What carries weight now: language scores, age, Canadian work experience, and above all a provincial nomination, worth 600 points on its own.
IRCC runs ten category-based draws. Four require Canadian work experience, so they are closed to you from India. The six reachable from abroad are French, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport. If your occupation sits in one, a category draw can invite you well below the general cut-off. If not, you compete in the open pool.
See our guide to Canada PR requirements for the eligibility detail.
Counselor insight: Applicants obsess over the general cut-off and ignore their NOC code. Spend an hour on the NOC website finding your exact five-digit code and TEER level first. That code decides which category draws you can ever appear in, and it is often not the one you assume.
How to Apply for Jobs in Canada From India: What to Do in Order
Sequence matters more than effort here. Most people apply to 200 jobs before doing the two things that actually unlock the process.
Do these first: book your language test, and order your Educational Credential Assessment. Both take weeks and both are prerequisites for almost everything else.
Then the documents. This is what you will need, and where Indian applicants typically get stuck.
| Document | What it is | The India-specific catch |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Valid throughout your intended stay | Your work permit cannot be issued for longer than your passport validity. Renew first if you have under two years left |
| Educational Credential Assessment | Report equating your degree to a Canadian credential | A three-year Indian bachelor's may be assessed below a Canadian four-year degree. If your highest qualification is a master's, WES also needs your bachelor's documents |
| Language test | IELTS, CELPIP, TEF or TCF | For immigration you need IELTS General Training, not Academic. Booking Academic by mistake is common and costs you a full retake |
| Employment reference letters | Proof of your work experience | Must be on company letterhead, signed, and must list duties matching your NOC lead statement. Indian HR departments often issue bare relieving letters that do not qualify |
| Police clearance certificate | Criminal record check | Issued by the Regional Passport Office or via your local police. Allow four to six weeks |
| Medical exam | Immigration medical by a panel physician | Only IRCC-approved panel physicians count. Available in most metros |
| Proof of funds | Settlement money for PR applications | Must be liquid and unencumbered. Fixed deposits generally qualify, property does not |
Once those are moving, target employers who already sponsor. Multinationals with Canadian subsidiaries, tech firms that use the Global Talent Stream, and healthcare employers in smaller provinces are more likely to say yes than a Toronto startup that has never filed an LMIA.
On timing: ESDC aims to process Global Talent Stream applications within 10 business days, 80% of the time. That is the fastest employer-side route available and it exists mainly for specialised tech and research roles. If your target employer qualifies for it, say so in your first conversation with them.
If you need to fix your English scores before any of this, start with the IELTS score you need for Canada.
Counselor insight: The reference letter is where 60% of Indian applications stall. Go to your current manager now, while you are still on good terms, and ask for a letter that lists your actual duties in sentences. Not a designation. Not a CTC figure. Duties. You will need it in eighteen months and by then your manager may have left.
What It Costs to Get a Job in Canada From India
A Canadian work permit application costs C$155, with biometrics normally an additional C$85. Those are the headline numbers. Here is the real budget.
| Item | Cost in INR | Cost in CAD | Who pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work permit application | Rs.10,621 | C$155 | You |
| Biometrics | Rs.5,824 | C$85 | You |
| Open work permit holder fee, where it applies | Rs.6,852 | C$100 | You |
| WES ECA for immigration | Rs.18,089 | C$264 | You |
| International courier for ECA documents | Rs.6,646 | C$97 | You |
| Express Entry PR application, including right of permanent residence fee | Rs.1,08,947 | C$1,590 | You |
| Right of permanent residence fee, if deferred | Rs.41,112 | C$600 | You |
| LMIA application | Rs.68,520 | C$1,000 | Your employer |
| Employer compliance fee (LMIA-exempt offers) | Rs.15,760 | C$230 | Your employer |
Exchange rate used: Rs.68.52 per Canadian dollar. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.
Add your IELTS fee, medical exam, police certificate and translation costs on top. A realistic all-in figure for a single applicant pursuing the work permit route is Rs.60,000 to Rs.90,000 in government and third-party fees. The PR route runs higher because of the application fee, but it does not depend on anyone else's cooperation.
Two things to hold on to. First, the LMIA fee is the employer's legal obligation and cannot be passed to you. If anyone asks you to pay it, walk away. Second, budget separately for your first three months in Canada before your salary starts, which our guides to cost of living in Canada and average salary in Canada can help you size.
Counselor insight: Families routinely budget for the visa and forget the ECA, the courier, the medical and the translations. Those add up to more than the permit itself. Build the full list before you tell your parents a number.
Which Indian Profiles Have the Best Shot at a Job in Canada
Routes are not equally open to everyone. Three common situations, and what we would actually tell each person.
If you are a Bengaluru software engineer with four years at a services company and no master's degree, your best route is Express Entry, not a job hunt. Your age and language scores are your strongest assets and both decay with time. Get your ECA and IELTS General done, identify whether your NOC code falls under STEM, and put a profile in the pool within 90 days. Chase a Global Talent Stream employer in parallel, but treat it as the bonus, not the plan. Your first action this week: identify your five-digit NOC code.
If you are a registered nurse from Kerala with an Indian B.Sc Nursing and two years in a tertiary hospital, you are in the most favourable position of anyone reading this. Healthcare and social services is an active category reachable with experience gained outside Canada, and nursing is exempt from several of the LMIA restrictions above. But licensing is your gate, not immigration. Contact the regulatory college in your target province before you do anything else, because the credential process can run longer than the visa. Your first action this week: email the provincial nursing regulator.
If you are a final-year B.Tech student graduating in June 2027 with no work experience, none of the work permit routes are realistically open to you, and honest counselling means saying so. Employers sponsoring from abroad want experience. Your two options are to build two to three years of experience in India first and then use Express Entry, or to study in Canada and use the Post-Graduation Work Permit. The second is faster but costs far more. Your first action this week: decide which of those two you are choosing, and stop applying to Canadian job portals until you have.
If you are weighing cities, our comparison of living costs across Canadian cities is worth reading before you fix on Toronto by default.
Counselor insight: We tell freshers this every week and it is unpopular: applying to Canadian jobs with zero experience is not a strategy, it is a way to feel busy. Two years at an Indian employer with a clean reference letter will do more for your file than two thousand applications.
Your Month-by-Month Plan to Get a Job in Canada From India
This calendar assumes you start now and works around the Indian academic and appraisal cycle.
| Months | What you do | Why now |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Book IELTS General Training. Order your WES ECA. Request university transcripts | Both have long lead times and everything else waits on them |
| 3 | Identify your NOC code and TEER level. Collect reference letters | Do this while you are still employed and on good terms |
| 4 | Create your Express Entry profile the day your ECA and test results land | Your age score drops on every birthday. There is no reason to wait |
| 5 to 6 | Begin targeted applications. Focus on multinationals with Canadian entities and Global Talent Stream employers | Canadian hiring picks up after the winter slowdown |
| 7 to 8 | Apply for the provincial nominee streams you qualify for | A nomination is worth 600 CRS points and is the single biggest lever available to you |
| 9 to 10 | Police clearance and medical exam | Both expire, so do not do them too early |
| 11 to 12 | Work permit application, or PR application if you receive an Invitation to Apply | You get 60 days to submit after an ITA |
Two dates to put in your calendar regardless of where you are in this plan: 9 October 2026, when the LMIA city list refreshes, and your IELTS expiry date, which is two years from your test.
Avoid launching applications in late December. Canadian hiring slows sharply over the holidays and picks up in mid-January.
Counselor insight: The most expensive mistake we see is waiting for a job offer before creating an Express Entry profile. The profile is free to create and sits in the pool for twelve months. There is no downside and every month you delay costs you age points.
What to Do When Your Canada Job Plan Goes Wrong
It does go wrong. Here is what to actually do.
Your employer's LMIA was refused. Ask why in writing. If the reason is the regional freeze, the fix is either the high-wage stream or waiting for the quarterly refresh on 9 October 2026. If the reason is a weak labour market test, the employer must re-advertise and refile. Do not resign your Indian job until the permit is in hand.
Your IELTS came in below CLB 7 on one band. Retake only that test. Do not retake everything. Most Indian applicants lose points on speaking or writing, and four to six weeks of focused practice on a single band is usually enough. Your profile can stay in the pool while you retest.
Your ECA downgraded your three-year degree. This is common and it can cost 30 or more CRS points. You cannot appeal the assessment, but you can offset it: a provincial nomination, a stronger language score, or a second credential. Check your report carefully for factual errors before accepting the outcome.
Your work permit was refused. Read the refusal letter and request your GCMS notes. The most common grounds for Indian applicants are weak home-country ties and doubts about the genuineness of the job offer. Both are addressable in a fresh application with better evidence. A refusal is not a ban.
A consultant is offering you a guaranteed job offer. Four red flags, any one of which should end the conversation: they ask you to pay the LMIA fee, they promise a specific CRS score increase from a job offer, they cannot name the employer, or they ask for money before showing you a written offer on company letterhead. Genuine employers do not charge you to hire you.
Your target city is frozen for low-wage LMIAs. Look at Winnipeg, Quรฉbec City, Saskatoon and smaller centres, where rates have run below 6%. Provincial nominee streams in these provinces are also less competitive than Ontario's.
Counselor insight: When a refusal comes, most people either give up or immediately refile the same application. Both are wrong. Get the GCMS notes first. They tell you exactly what the officer doubted, and you cannot fix a concern you have not read.
3 Takeaways on How to Get a Job in Canada From India
Working out how to get a job in Canada from India comes down to choosing the right route rather than working harder at the wrong one. Three things to do:
- Create your Express Entry profile before you have a job offer, not after. It is free, it lasts twelve months, and your age score only falls from here.
- Find your five-digit NOC code this week and check it against the six category draws reachable from outside Canada. That one check tells you whether you have a realistic route or need a different plan.
- Ask any prospective employer which LMIA stream they will file under and whether the role sits above the provincial wage threshold. If they cannot answer, you have your answer.

Frequently Asked Questions About How to Get a Job in Canada From India
-
How do I spot a fake Canadian job offer sold by a consultant?
Check three things. The employer should be a real, findable company you can contact independently. The offer should arrive on company letterhead with a named signatory. And nobody should ask you for the LMIA fee, which is legally the employer's cost. Any request for payment against a guaranteed offer or a guaranteed CRS increase is a reason to stop.
-
Is it better to get PR first or a job offer first?
For most Indian professionals with a degree and strong English, permanent residence first is the more reliable path, because it does not depend on an employer choosing to fund an LMIA. A job offer route makes more sense if you already work for a multinational with a Canadian office or your occupation qualifies for the Global Talent Stream.
-
What if my employer's city is on the LMIA freeze list?
Ask the employer to confirm whether the role is above the provincial wage threshold, in which case the high-wage stream applies and the freeze does not. If it is genuinely a low-wage role in a frozen city, your options are to wait for the quarterly refresh, check whether the occupation falls under an exempt sector, or look at employers in cities below 6%.
-
Can Indians apply for International Experience Canada?
India is not on Canada's list of countries with a bilateral youth mobility agreement, so the standard IEC working holiday route is closed to Indian citizens. Some Indians reportedly participate through IEC recognised organisations, but confirm current eligibility directly with IRCC before paying anyone. The IEC fee itself is Rs.12,659 (C$184.75).
-
How long does the Canada work permit process from India take?
Timelines vary widely by route and change month to month, so check IRCC's processing times tool for a current figure rather than relying on any published number. As a planning assumption, allow four to nine months from signed offer to permit on the standard LMIA route, and shorter where the Global Talent Stream applies.
-
Which jobs in Canada are easiest for Indians to get?
Occupations inside the active Express Entry categories give you the clearest path: healthcare and social services, STEM, skilled trades, education and transport. Healthcare and construction roles also sit outside several LMIA restrictions. Ease depends less on the job title than on whether your NOC code appears in a category IRCC is actively drawing from.
-
Does a Canadian job offer increase my Express Entry CRS score in 2026?
No longer. IRCC removed job offer points from the Comprehensive Ranking System on 25 March 2025, eliminating both the 200-point senior management award and the 50 points for other skilled occupations. A valid offer can still help you meet eligibility for the Federal Skilled Trades Program, Federal Skilled Worker Program and some provincial streams, so keep it in your profile.
-
Do I need a job offer to get a Canada work permit from India?
For an employer-specific work permit, yes, you need a named offer from a Canadian employer. Open work permits exist but are limited to specific situations such as spouses of certain permit holders and post-graduation work permits. Neither is available to someone applying from India without prior Canadian status.
-
Can I apply for jobs in Canada from India without moving there?
You can apply and interview from India without any Canadian status. What you cannot do is start working. Interviews are routinely held over video, and offers are made to candidates abroad. The gap between accepting an offer and legally starting work is where the work permit process sits, and that is the part to plan for.
