The Two Scholarships You Can Apply to Right Now
Of the 10 on this list, three have deadlines open today, and one is more urgent than most readers realize.
- Rhodes Scholarship (India 2027 cycle): July 23, 2026. The portal opened June 1, 2026, and closes at 23:59 IST on July 23. You have 31 days. This is the most time-sensitive scholarship on this entire list. If you meet the eligibility criteria, Indian citizenship, age 18–23 on October 1, 2026, and a strong undergraduate record, stop reading and start your application today.
- Fulbright-Nehru: July 15, 2026. Verify the current cycle status at usief.org.in before applying and confirm the 2027–28 cycle is open and the July 15 deadline is live for this cycle. If confirmed, you have fewer than four weeks. Apply at the official website above.
- DAAD: October 15, 2026. Four months sounds like a lot. It is not. A competitive DAAD application requires a program admission offer or conditional offer from a German institution, a research proposal, two strong letters of recommendation, and a motivation letter tailored to your specific program. Four months is enough time to do the application properly. Starting today means you are not rushing. Starting in September means you are.
The remaining seven scholarships on this list open between August and November 2026. The best use of the time between now and those openings is to build your essays and secure your recommenders. Chevening and Commonwealth both require strong personal statements about your leadership and your postgraduation plans in India; those take time to develop honestly. Gates Cambridge requires a 500-word statement that addresses all four selection criteria. Knight-Hennessy asks for evidence of independent thinking and civic leadership. None of these can be assembled the night before.
If you are eligible for the Rhodes, that application takes absolute priority this week.
