Software Engineer Salary in Netherlands 2027-28: The Headline Numbers
The median software engineer salary in Netherlands is roughly โฌ86,300 in total compensation, but no single figure survives contact with reality. Five major datasets report five different answers, and the difference between them is larger than most Indian graduates’ entire first-year package.
| Source | Reported figure (annual) | In INR | What it actually measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| levels.fyi | โฌ86,307 median total comp | Rs.94.7L | Self-reported, skews to Booking, Adyen, Optiver, US big tech |
| SalaryExpert / ERI | โฌ83,580 median gross base | Rs.91.7L | Employer survey data, base only |
| Glassdoor | โฌ68,000 median total pay | Rs.74.6L | Self-reported, broader employer mix |
| Payscale | โฌ39,360 entry-level base | Rs.43.2L | Skews to Dutch-domestic SMEs and consultancies |

The honest answer for a student is this: anchor on โฌ45,000 to โฌ55,000 (Rs.49.4L to Rs.60.4L) for your first role out of a Dutch MSc, and treat โฌ86,000 as what you might reach after five to seven years with a good employer. Anyone who shows your parents the โฌ86,000 figure as a starting salary is misleading them.
Counselor insight: Students who quote levels.fyi numbers in salary negotiations for their first job consistently damage their own credibility. Dutch recruiters know exactly which companies feed that dataset. Quote the level, not the national median.
If you are still choosing a program, our guide to an MSc Computer Science in the Netherlands covers which universities feed which employers.
Why Software Engineer Salary Estimates for the Netherlands Disagree So Much
Three methodology gaps explain the entire spread.
Base versus total compensation. Glassdoor reports base pay of โฌ50,000 to โฌ70,000 with additional pay of โฌ3,000 to โฌ15,000 on top. levels.fyi bundles equity and bonus into one headline number. For most Dutch engineers outside trading firms and US tech, total comp tracks base closely, so the bundled figure overstates what a typical offer looks like.
Who submits. levels.fyi carries 1,389 Netherlands data points, weighted toward Amsterdam and toward firms where reporting your package is culturally normal. Payscale picks up mid-market Dutch employers where a junior developer genuinely earns in the โฌ30,000s.
City mix. Amsterdam distorts every national average. The city median total comp is โฌ100,438 (Rs.1.10 Cr), while Rotterdam sits at โฌ64,000 (Rs.70.2L).
Counselor insight: Before any salary conversation at home, decide which of the three numbers you are discussing: base, base plus holiday allowance, or total comp including equity. Indian families almost always compare a Dutch base figure against an Indian CTC figure, which is not a like-for-like comparison and usually makes the Netherlands look worse than it is.
Entry, Mid and Senior Software Engineer Salary in Netherlands by Level
Entry-level median total compensation is โฌ55,403 (Rs.60.8L), with a 25th-to-75th range of โฌ44,513 to โฌ68,011. Senior engineers report a median base of โฌ97,066 (Rs.1.07 Cr) and median total comp of โฌ102,655 (Rs.1.13 Cr) across 828 data points, rising to โฌ107,098 (Rs.1.18 Cr) for senior roles in Amsterdam.
| Level | Typical annual range | In INR | Realistic for an Indian MSc graduate? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh graduate, non-EU | โฌ40,000 to โฌ50,000 | Rs.43.9L to Rs.54.9L | Yes, most common first offer |
| Entry level, strong employer | โฌ50,000 to โฌ68,000 | Rs.54.9L to Rs.74.6L | Yes, with a Dutch internship on your CV |
| Mid level, 3 to 5 years | โฌ70,000 to โฌ90,000 | Rs.76.8L to Rs.98.8L | Yes, by year four |
| Senior, 6 years plus | โฌ95,000 to โฌ120,000 | Rs.1.04 Cr to Rs.1.32 Cr | Yes, realistically post-2033 |
| 90th percentile, all levels | โฌ157,566 total comp | Rs.1.73 Cr | Rare, trading firms and US big tech |
Two things matter more than the numbers. First, a Dutch MSc plus a Dutch internship moves you from the bottom band to the middle band, and it is the single highest-return thing you can do during your degree. Second, prior Indian work experience is discounted heavily in the Netherlands. Two years at an Indian service company typically gets you a junior title, not a mid-level one.
Counselor insight: Students who complete a six-month graduation internship (stage) with the employer they eventually join almost always convert at a higher band than students who apply cold after graduating. Start looking for that internship in your first semester, not your third.
Software Engineer Salary in Netherlands in Indian Rupees, After Tax
Gross salary is not what lands in your account. Dutch Box 1 income tax for 2026 runs at 35.75% on income up to โฌ38,883 (Rs.42.7L), 37.56% from โฌ38,883 to โฌ78,426 (Rs.86.1L), and 49.50% above that, as confirmed in the Belastingplan 2026 summary. The first-bracket rate looks brutal because it already includes roughly 27.65% of national insurance for state pension, survivors' benefit and long-term care.
| Gross salary | In INR | Indicative Box 1 tax | Roughly what remains before credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| โฌ45,000 | Rs.49.4L | โฌ16,201 | โฌ28,799 (Rs.31.6L) |
| โฌ55,000 | Rs.60.4L | โฌ19,954 | โฌ35,046 (Rs.38.5L) |
| โฌ85,000 | Rs.93.3L | โฌ32,006 | โฌ52,994 (Rs.58.2L) |
Exchange rate used: Rs.109.74 per โฌ1. Verify the current rate before finalising your budget.
Tax credits (heffingskorting and arbeidskorting) worth up to roughly โฌ8,800 combined reduce the actual bill, so treat the final column as a floor rather than a forecast. Also note that most Dutch contracts add an 8% holiday allowance (vakantiegeld), usually paid in May, on top of the twelve monthly payments. A โฌ55,000 contract therefore pays out closer to โฌ59,400 across the year.
Set this against your monthly outgo before you celebrate. Our cost of living in the Netherlands breakdown shows that Amsterdam rent alone can absorb half of a junior net salary.
Counselor insight: Students routinely calculate their loan EMI against the gross euro figure. Do the maths on the net figure minus rent, minus the mandatory health insurance premium, and only then decide how much education loan you can service comfortably.
The Salary Threshold That Decides Whether You Can Stay
For an Indian graduate, the number that decides your future is not the market average. It is the IND salary criterion. The IND's published 2026 amounts set gross monthly salary, excluding holiday allowance, at โฌ5,942 (Rs.6,52,075) for highly skilled migrants aged 30 and over, โฌ4,357 (Rs.4,78,137) for those under 30, and a reduced โฌ3,122 (Rs.3,42,608) for graduates hired following the orientation year for highly educated persons.
That reduced criterion is the entire reason the Netherlands works for Indian students. โฌ3,122 per month is โฌ37,464 a year, comfortably below a normal junior software engineer offer. Without it, a fresher would need โฌ4,357 a month, or โฌ52,284 a year, which many graduate offers do not reach.
The orientation year (zoekjaar) is a one-year residence permit for graduates of Dutch institutions and of qualifying foreign universities, applied for within three years of graduation. It gives free access to the labour market with no work permit and no salary threshold, which means you can take any job while you search for a sponsored one.
Counselor insight: The most common preventable failure I see is a student accepting an offer from an employer that is not a recognised sponsor. The salary is fine, the role is fine, and the permit is impossible. Ask one question in the first interview: are you an IND-recognised sponsor.
Important for your year frame: these amounts are indexed every 1 January against the collective labour agreement wage index published by Statistics Netherlands, and the new figures appear each December. The 2026 indexation ran at 4.46%. The 2026 amounts above are the latest officially confirmed figures, and the 2027 and 2028 amounts will be higher. Check ind.nl on the date you apply rather than trusting any number, including this one.
How the 27% Ruling Changes Your Software Engineer Salary in Netherlands from 2027
If you arrive in the Netherlands for an MSc in 2027-28 and start work after graduating, you will never receive the 30% expat ruling that every salary blog still describes. The Dutch government's expat scheme allows a tax-free allowance of up to 30% of salary for a maximum of five years, and that percentage is reduced to 27% from 1 January 2027, with limited exceptions for people who activated the facility before 2024. The Belastingdienst's own guidance confirms the scheme mechanics and the annual maximum reimbursement.
The minimum salary also rises. The 2026 taxable salary norm is โฌ48,013 (Rs.52.7L), and from 1 January 2027 the standard norm becomes โฌ50,436 (Rs.55.3L), with a lower norm for employees under 30 holding a qualifying master's degree.
Here is the part nobody tells Indian graduates: at a โฌ50,000 starting salary, applying the full 27% exemption would drop your taxable wage to โฌ36,500, below the standard norm. Employers handle this through partial application, exempting a smaller percentage so your taxable wage still clears the threshold. The practical effect is that a fresher on a junior salary gets far less benefit from the ruling than the headline suggests, and possibly none at all.
Counselor insight: When an employer's offer letter says "30% ruling eligible," ask them to model your actual net pay with partial application. Two students with the same gross offer can take home meaningfully different amounts depending on whether the ruling applies in full, in part, or not at all.
Where Software Engineer Salary in Netherlands Is Highest: Cities and Employers
Amsterdam leads decisively. The city's median total comp of โฌ100,438 sits roughly โฌ14,000 above the national median, and senior Amsterdam roles report โฌ107,098. Veldhoven, home to ASML, comes in around โฌ86,814. Rotterdam trails at โฌ64,000.
Employer type matters more than city. ING's published bands run from โฌ51,500 (Rs.56.5L) at Software Engineer 1 to โฌ99,700 (Rs.1.09 Cr) at Software Engineer 4, with a median package of โฌ93,100 (Rs.1.02 Cr). At the far end of the market, the highest-paying employer reported on levels.fyi is Meta at an average โฌ204,053 (Rs.2.24 Cr), and Optiver L5 engineers in Amsterdam have reported โฌ363,000. Those are outliers with single-digit acceptance rates, not benchmarks.
The Amsterdam premium is also partly an illusion. Rent in Amsterdam can eat the entire โฌ14,000 differential, which is why some graduates take Eindhoven or Utrecht offers and end up better off monthly. Our student accommodation in the Netherlands guide covers city-by-city rent, and if you are still shortlisting, best universities in the Netherlands for masters shows which campuses sit inside which employer clusters.
Counselor insight: Eindhoven and Delft graduates get interviews at Brainport employers like ASML and NXP through university career fairs that Amsterdam students have to travel for. If semiconductor or embedded work interests you, choose the campus, not the city.
When Things Go Wrong: No Job Offer, Low Salary, or a Refused Extension
Your orientation year is running out with no offer. The permit is one year with no extension. You cannot switch to a second orientation year. Your options narrow to an offer that clears the standard under-30 criterion, a return to India, or a different EU country. Start applying in your final semester, not after graduation.
Your offer is below the salary criterion. A โฌ35,000 offer will not support a highly skilled migrant permit even under the reduced criterion, because โฌ3,122 a month equals โฌ37,464 a year. Negotiate on the annual figure, and confirm that no part of the threshold is being met through holiday allowance, which does not count.
Your employer is not a recognised sponsor. They can apply for recognition, but it takes time you may not have. Ask early.
You cannot get past the Dutch-language barrier. Amsterdam and Eindhoven multinationals hire in English. Many mid-market Dutch employers and consultancies expect conversational Dutch. Students who take one semester of Dutch during their degree report a noticeably easier search.
The market is tighter than the shortage headlines suggest. ICT roles remain hard to fill at higher education level, particularly for developers in specific languages, security specialists and business analysts, but unemployment claims from computing professionals have risen at the same time. Generalist profiles compete hard. Specialists do not.
Job Search Calendar for a September Intake
| Timeline | What to do |
|---|---|
| Sep to Dec, year 1 | Build a Dutch-format CV; attend university career fairs; start Dutch classes |
| Jan to Mar, year 1 | Apply for summer internships; target IND-recognised sponsors only |
| Apr to Aug, year 1 | Complete internship; convert contacts into referrals |
| Sep to Dec, year 2 | Begin graduation internship (stage); start full-time applications |
| Jan to Mar, year 2 | Interview cycles; verify sponsor status and salary criterion for every offer |
| Apr to Jun, year 2 | Accept offer; apply for orientation year permit before student permit expiry |
| Jul to Sep, year 2 | Employer files highly skilled migrant application under the reduced criterion |
Counselor insight: Indian students consistently start applying two months too late because the Dutch academic calendar makes final-semester deadlines feel far away. Dutch hiring runs slowly, with three to five rounds over six to ten weeks. Work backwards from your permit expiry date, not from your graduation date.
3 Takeaways on Software Engineer Salary in Netherlands
The software engineer salary in Netherlands is genuinely strong at mid and senior level, but the number that decides your first two years is the graduate band, not the national median. Three things to act on:
- Budget your loan against โฌ45,000 to โฌ55,000, not โฌ86,000. Model the EMI on net pay after Dutch tax and Amsterdam-level rent, then decide your borrowing limit.
- Secure a Dutch internship during your degree. It is the single strongest lever for moving from the bottom salary band to the middle one, and it is also your best route to a recognised-sponsor employer.
- Verify two numbers before signing any offer: the IND salary criterion current on your application date, and whether your employer is a recognised sponsor. Both are checkable on ind.nl in minutes, and both are non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Software Engineer Salary in Netherlands
-
What is the average software engineer salary in Netherlands?
Estimates range from โฌ68,000 to โฌ86,300 depending on the dataset. levels.fyi reports median total compensation of โฌ86,307 (Rs.94.7L), while Glassdoor reports โฌ68,000 (Rs.74.6L) median total pay. For a fresh graduate, the realistic first-job range is โฌ45,000 to โฌ55,000, or Rs.49.4L to Rs.60.4L.
-
What happens if I do not find a job during my orientation year?
The permit lasts one year and cannot be extended or repeated. Without a qualifying offer you must either secure a role meeting the standard under-30 criterion of โฌ4,357 per month, move to another EU country, or return to India. This is why applications should begin in your final semester rather than after graduation.
-
Do I need to speak Dutch to get a software engineering job?
Not at multinationals and scale-ups in Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht, which hire and operate in English. Many mid-market Dutch employers and consultancies do expect conversational Dutch, which shuts off a large part of the market. One semester of Dutch during your degree measurably widens your options.
-
Is the software engineer salary in Netherlands better than Germany?
They are close. Senior total compensation in Amsterdam sits around โฌ107,098 against โฌ92,878 nationally in Germany, while Ireland leads at โฌ122,434. The Dutch advantage for Indian students is structural rather than financial: more English-taught programs and an orientation year with unrestricted labour market access.
-
Which companies pay software engineers the most in the Netherlands?
Trading firms and US tech lead by a wide margin. levels.fyi reports Meta averaging โฌ204,053 and Optiver L5 packages of โฌ363,000 in Amsterdam. Dutch employers pay less: ING bands run from โฌ51,500 at entry to โฌ99,700 at Software Engineer 4. Treat the top figures as rare outliers, not benchmarks.
-
Is โฌ60,000 a good salary for a software engineer in Amsterdam?
For a first job it is above average and workable. For someone with three years of experience it is below the Amsterdam market, where median total compensation is โฌ100,438. Weigh it against rent: Amsterdam housing can consume half of a junior net salary, so a โฌ55,000 offer in Eindhoven may leave you better off monthly.
-
Do I still get the 30% ruling in 2027?
No. The expat tax ruling reduces from 30% to 27% from 1 January 2027, and the standard minimum taxable salary rises to โฌ50,436. Anyone whose ruling begins in 2027 or later receives 27%, not 30%. At junior salary levels, employers often apply the exemption only partially so your taxable wage still clears the norm.
-
What salary do I need to stay in the Netherlands after my master's?
For 2026, the IND reduced salary criterion for graduates hired following the orientation year is โฌ3,122 gross per month, excluding holiday allowance. Graduates who do not use the orientation year route need โฌ4,357 per month if under 30. These amounts are indexed annually on 1 January, so verify the current figure on ind.nl.
-
What is the software engineer salary in Netherlands in Indian rupees?
At Rs.109.74 per euro, the national median of โฌ86,307 equals roughly Rs.94.7L annually, and a typical graduate salary of โฌ50,000 equals about Rs.54.9L. Both figures are gross. After Dutch Box 1 tax, a โฌ50,000 salary leaves closer to Rs.34L before tax credits.
