La Trobe University has launched a Bachelor of AI Engineering (Honours), which it describes as Australia’s first undergraduate qualification dedicated specifically to AI engineering. Co-designed with Cisco and Rockwell Automation, the degree welcomes its first cohort in Semester 1, 2027, and is aimed at training engineers who can actually deploy AI in physical, industrial systems rather than just software.
What the Degree Covers
- Focus area: designing, building, managing, and supporting AI systems across sectors, including healthcare, financial services, transport, logistics, and manufacturing.
- Specific technical ground: deploying AI in manufacturing, robotics, sensors, the internet of things, automation, and medical technologies plus software skills for agentic AI systems and workflows.
- Industry co-design: built with Cisco and Rockwell Automation, extending the Digital Skills for Industry partnership the two companies established with La Trobe in 2024 to address shortages in AI, industrial automation, networking, cybersecurity, and operational technology.
- First intake: Semester 1, 2027.
Why La Trobe Is Positioning It This Way
The university is framing the degree as filling a specific gap: most existing AI education is software- and data-focused, while this one is built around applying AI to physical systems and industrial operations. Rockwell Automation’s 2026 State of Smart Manufacturing report found 90% of manufacturers see digital transformation as essential to stay competitive, with more than half expecting AI-augmented operations by 2030. Engineers Australia has separately called on universities to do more to equip engineers with AI skills for safe, ethical, effective use. La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell said the degree reflects AI “moving beyond experimentation into real-world deployment across every major industry.”

Indian students already make up a large share of engineering and IT enrolments in Australia, and this degree sits at a genuinely differentiated intersection most "AI degrees" globally are computer-science-flavoured, while this one is explicitly engineering-first, industry-co-designed, and aimed at sectors (manufacturing, healthcare, logistics) where AI deployment is still catching up to AI development. For a student choosing between a conventional computer science/AI degree and something more hands-on, this is a genuinely new category of program rather than an existing course with an AI label added on.
